What do you think is over-rated?

You win bacon-infused premium vodka, and sex with Justin Bieber.

Overrated: six-sigma.

  1. Any professional sport.

  2. Any politician. Dems, Repubs, any of them. Not worth shooting.

Possibile amendment to #1 above. If girl’s beach volleyball were a professional sport, I’d have to make an exception for that.

  1. Text messaging. I don’t get the appeal and I’m certain that I never will.

  2. Jon Stewart

  3. Keith Olbermann

  4. Anime. Whatever man.

Recreational Outrage. It’s not worth raising my blood pressure, with the associated bad health effects, for something that doesn’t affect me personally.

Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, fast food and football are not “overrated,” at least not by my understanding of the concept of “overrated.” These things are intended for mass consumption. They’re as omnipresent as the air we breathe.

I understand “overrated” to refer to things that people get elitist and pretentious about, without merit (in the mind of the person declaring them “overrated.”) An emperor-has-no-clothes type deal. For something to be called overrated, I think it has to first garner the approval of intellectual apologists.

Tom Waits is definitely overrated. Wine appreciation is overrated. The Wire (TV show) is hugely overrated. The Shield, produced on a cheap budget with a homely-looking cast, is a better show.

Terry Pratchett?* Overrated*?

That’s it! Pistols at dawn!

Same goes to anybody who dared slander the good name of coffee.

Yes to:
Social Networking
Reality TV
i-products
Beiber

Noteworthy Additions:
Black Knight (Booooooooring. I said it. Sue me)
Supernatural
Cats (the musical)
40yr Old Virgin
Getting drunk (I’d rather actively lose my inhibitions and keep the money)
Youth
Public Transportation (and it’s got low standards here)

What about Kevin Bacon? Mmmmmm.

Overrated is anything in the popular culture that both (a) I don’t know about, and (b) for which people are amazed that I don’t know about it.

I actually came in here to say the opposite. I think the Shield is vastly overrated. I’ve heard many people say that if you like The Wire, you’ll like The Shield. To me, that’s like saying, “If you like a steak, you’ll like a Big Mac.”

Other over-rated things, IMHO:
Bones (TV show)
I wanted to shut it off partway through the first episode, but the person I was with convinced me to watch a few more episodes. It didn’t get much better.

Most Apple products
They usually aren’t bad, and are often good. But they’re definitely overrated by a certain amount of devotees.

Automobile Aesthetics
Lamborghini? It looks like a car. PT Cruiser? It looks like a car. Oscar Meyer Weinermobile? It looks like … ok, it looks like a giant hotdog. But everything else just looks like a car.

And of course, Other Peoples’ Opinions. What, they think they’re entitled or something?

:frowning: I’ll try to be more interesting.

Everything Japanese.

Do you mean the latest Batman movie? Because that was the Dark Knight.

Did you mean The Dark Knight?

Or are you referring to the Martin Lawrence movie? Because as far as I know everyone hates it.

Edit: Damn you, Skald!

I just checked the org chart. You do not have damning authority. You don’t even work in Hell.

Ed Hardy and Dane Cook were overrated years ago. You can only see Ed Hardy on trashy white kids at community college anymore.

Children are extremely overrated. The only people who lead fulfilling lives personally and professionally have 0 or 1 child, or an army of caregivers.

Modern art.

Jon Stewart, but only recently.

“Greening” things. 9/10 times it’s a marketing ploy to save money.

Your narrow personal definition of overrated? OVERRATED!

I agree on:

Lady Gaga

Disney
and I’ll add:

any fancy pants coffee

bourbon

American football (pro and college)

Miami

Blackberry smartphones

Cheese on my damn hamburger.

Gosh I hate to get into this, but I have to mention at least one major counterexample from my own family.

My aunt and uncle have two children. He was for most of his career a professor of physics in a major midwest university, eventually reaching the position of the head of the physics department before retiring. They have travelled all around the world as tourists and so that he could give lectures at universities. By way of sabbatical they have spent extended time in many different countries – a year in London, six months in Budapest are two that I remember.

I would say they have led an exceptionally fulfilling life.

Agree.

Also agree. Don’t get me wrong, sex can be fun but some people seem to think it’s the greatest thing ever. I’ve had great sex but there are still things I like better

x4

China (over-hyped is probably a better term)
Grad School
The ever eminent massive baby boomer retirement (been waiting 20 years for this one)
Tim Hortons
UFC
Kids being tech savvy

Agreed with whoever said Terry Pratchett. Vastly overrated.

Yoga.

Eddie Izzard.

Then you’re doing it wrong.

Also applies to bacon.
Things that actually are over-rated:

Weddings
Lip injections
Bret Michaels
