What does your Straight Dope nickname mean?

My name comes from this book that I read every year around exams. It’s my all-time favorite. Exiles: The Ruins of Ambrai but Melanie Rawn. One of the saints is Deiket Snowhair (DAY-kit). She is the patron saint of mountains, teachers, and scholars. Her sigil is a book. She just seemed to fit me and I love the name. And the book.
I recommend the series to anyone!!

Mine is rather boring and not obscure at all. Lola Granola was engaged to Opus in Bloom County. It’s been my favourite comic strip forever, and I like being associated with it. Considering how often it’s taken (so I have to be lolag, lolag1, mslolagranola, etc), I should have picked yaz pistachio, which was my second choice.

I also used to be tatiana when I first went online, but I got sick of strange guys IM’ing me and telling me what a sexy name I had.

Melpomene is The Songstress, the Muse of Tragedy.

My IRC aliases are:

allegretto = Tribute to my composer-bf, also a good description of my personality (moderately fast & upbeat)

MadOphelia = Hamlet reference to the poor girl who was used by everyone around her and finally just went nuts and died…possibly by suicide

Eismette = Name of a city in Greenland that holds the country’s record for lowest temperatures…I thought it was pretty

Mine was just going round and round in my head before I registered, so I decided to use it. I thought I’d find out what it meant first, so I did a quick search on Google and found sites relating to one Turkish ex-prime minister (who I’d heard of, but forgotten about), and one large piece of Japanese furniture.

Mine’s kinda obvious. I’m hyper, and a girl.

When I first decided to stop lurking and actually say something. (never mind that I don’t really have that much interesting to say.) I tried to sign up as Bear, a variation on my real name, Barry, because that’s what most of my friends call me IRL. Of course that was taken, as were Papa and Papa Bear, what the grandkids call me. (yes, I’m an old guy).

I happened to have been re-reading an old copy of Ten Ever-lovin, Blue-eyed Years with Pogo by Walt Kelly, and had left it lying on my desk next to the computer, and decided I liked the idea of an obscure reference to the greatest cartoonist ever.
At first I tried Bewitched, Bothered and Bemildewed, the three bats from the strip, but the sign up page wouldn’t take it. So, I picked Bumbazine, the nominal star of the strip before that upstart Pogo came along.
Kellys original strip being Bumbazine and Albert the Alligator, which appeared in issue number one of Animal Comics in 1943.

Now I’m just being pedantic, or as Walt would say:
“Lordy, he do go on some!”

vix is an occasional nickname of mine IRL. Also, short for vixen, of course.

I didn’t know there was a voguevixen when I took the name, or I might have chosen differently to avoid confusion. There was a Vixen who made a brief appearance, too, but she’s either gone or very quiet now.

Mine is fairly straight forward, Think Snow. I love snow and the winter activities and items that go with it: skiing, snowboarding, hot chocolate, flannel pj pants, thick wool socks and hot-tubbing in the snow. I’ve been using TS for years across many a board.

I get pissed when I find someone has already registered that name somewhere and I have to resort to things like numbers instead of letters:

th1nksnow or thinksn0w

If you ever see a Dodge Avenger with the license plate THNKSNOW, honk and wave, you’ve met another doper.

In HS and college, I used a really, really obscure handle: Swap.Inc (swap_inc) that I swear I had heard about on a radio show one morning. IIRC, it was the name of a company dedicated to matching up “swinger” couples that wanted to make new “friends.” I was so amused by the idea, I used it for years (the name, not the service) and always got questioned about it.

I really, really, really dislike Emu’s.

I was bitten by one when I was transporting it to the raptor facility. They can hurt!
My e-mail address is the Latin name for the Eastern Screech-owl.

Snickers = my cat. Also, I get to laugh at you all…
::snickers::

So now there’s spittle on my keyboard…

Sue!!!

that is absolute GENIUS!

for the thicks out there… SueDuhnym=Pseudonym=false name.
I got mine from an X-files where they are trapped in a cave with moth-men running rampant and they have these creepy red-glowing eyes, but you can’t see the rest of their body because they go all predator-like on ya, and you can’t see them because they blend in with their surroundings… good episode.

Spinne - spider
Ziege - goat

The spider goat is a genetically engineered goat that produces spidermilk. Scientists and engineers hope to use the stuff as a steel substitute. Bye-bye, Pittsburgh. Helllooooo family spidermilk farm!

This creature is a true product of the 21st century. I thought it was an appropriate enough for an internet name. Beats my old one “doppelgänger.”

I think I have told this story before but one more time won’t hurt. My user name comes from a childhood incident when an older brother was yelling "Who’s the jackass that left the fridge open? To which I replied “I’m the jackass”.
And, well, sometimes I am.

When I signed up I was thinking that it would be really fun to date so there you go! I’ll let you know how it turns out!

A long, long time ago, pappa flodnak needed a password for a computer program at work. It needed to be simple enough so that most of the people he worked with could remember it, but odd enough that outsiders would not easily guess it. Thus was the word flodnak born. I was the first one to start using it as a name for myself, although Dad now uses it for e-mail. If you do a Web search on “flodnak”, everything you find will relate to one of us… and should give you a clue about where the name comes from. It is not, as some assume, a Norwegian word.

While we’re at it, I refer to my husband as “fella bilong missus flodnak”. This is my bad version of Tok Pisin, an English-based pidgin spoken in Papua New Guinea. It comes from a story that when the British royals came to PNG on a state visit, a newspaper refered to Prince Phil as “fella bilong missus queen”. Depending on which version of the story you believe, he was either utterly charmed or deeply offended. Fella bilong missus flodnak likes his nickname. Flodjunior is our older son; flod2k is the younger, 2000 model.

I guess I’m a thick:)!! I was thinking 'Sue done him? So who is him?? I guess I think about sex too much…

Mine is boring… I like astronomy (ergo the astroboy part…) and 14 because I use this name for online gaming… and there are many astroboys out there…

Mine stems from the anonymity of these boards. To most that I meet online, I’m just some dewt.

Others know me as dewd, dute, deut… you get the idea.

A select one knows me as lewd dewd, though she respectfully calls me ‘hon’.

When I first started on the net I wanted something anonynmous and came up with Datacube Flower Child. A sort of Technical hippy thing. Don’t know why, but I use it everywhere. Managed to confuse a good many people. But it is too long to type here, So I shortened it. Sounds good too. (maybe I am a little biased)

My friend thought it was from Tai Chi, I would like to squash that rumour now. I’ll do exercise when I want to.
