What does your Straight Dope nickname mean?

Mine means that my real name (Lowell) was already taken. And the bastard never even uses it!

I must agree that Sue Duhnym is pure genius. Can’t believe I didn’t catch it before Sue’s post prompted me to think about it a little.

I’d like to see jjjfishe pop in here. What IS up with all of those j’s?

AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I’ve been trying to find out what the heck ‘flodnak’ means FORVER!!!

AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I held a contest to find out if anyone could ID my handle. Gravity finally did it. I’ve got a prize for her but I keep forgetting to mail it. Really Grav…it’s um…in the mail!

Jonathan Chance was originally the character Tommy Shaw played in the Styx LP Kilroy Was Here. I used it on the spur of the moment for a D&D character and it became the best character I ever had.

But I adopted it for my handle here and abroad because there came a time in my life where I was really on top of things. I had my career nailed. I was in control and running the show. If a decision needed to be made I was the one who made it and I was glad to do it.

Then I realized that all that control wasn’t all that much fun. It’s better to leave some drift in your life. Let those random events intrude. They can enlighten and entertain if you don’t get too worked up about them.

or

It seemed so much more profound when I thought of it.

uhhhh…I can’t remember… :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh yeah, there was a coffee shop here in COWlumbus, Ohio called Idiot Boy Cafe. It was open 24 hours, and I lived there more than in my apartment. Sadly, the shop closed down several years ago, so my moniker remains as a monument to that most wonderful of meeting places without which, I would never have met the love of my life, Katie!

It’s my favorite element of heraldry, used in coats of arms and on flags. One of the better known examples of the saltire is St. Patrick’s Cross.

Actually, St. Andrew’s Cross is better known, but I’m of Irish descent, so I skipped over the Scottish saint.

Hey, lolagranola, you still have a tattoo of Dan Fogerburp on your tuckus?

Seen this thread pop up again and again. I left it alone, but thought I finally might as well post where my name’s from. It’s really easy.

Simetra ==> Artemis.

Has a lotta personal meaning. I shan’t go into it. At least now you know where I got the name. As if you cared after the third page.

My friends and I were all obsessed with monkeys, and deemed all things monkey-like to be cooler than all get out. My friend Greg was the first to point out that we should all have uber-secret monkey names, and so he was the very first to be named, and he was “monkey adam” and his girlfriend was named “monkey eve” because it seemed the right thing to do. I was next in the naming, and since I had been kicked out of Greg’s house for reasons unknown to us, I was given the name “monkey lucifer” as I had been forced out of paradise.

We were silly teenagers, but I can ALWAYS find use the name online, because it’s never taken.

mine’s pretty basic – I’m a (very) amateur astronomer. That, and I really like stargazer lilies. And my roommate is going to be a star someday – just you watch.

Business to Business

It’s a web term for people who sell wholesale online.

Ok …mine is lame,I know it,but its one of the few things I can remember regularly enough to use as a username anywhere, its my initials and the day and year of my birth,
just no month,
please dont flame me for lameness
I just forget stuff

Boy, do I know that feeling!

I played tuba since the sixth grade as well, but that was back in 1975. I was the first female tuba player in the history of my high school.

My nick comes from a character I created for a story on a BBS.

It’s the nickname that Nightscream used to have for Blackarachnia on “Transformers: Beast Machines.”

Yes, I’m a cartoonaholic.

My name is also similar to my AOL screenname (Lemming104) and, if it’s still available, I take it on every BBS and email server I use. Failing that, I just take my AOL screenname for consistency.

Obviously, both are inspired by the old computer game, Lemmings, and I just found that oddly appropriate–the little guys were downright aggravating at times.

Well I tried to start a thread just like this not too long ago but it got to 16 replys and stalled so here is the link to it here.

Anywho I got my nickname from junior high wrestling because my last name is Mongler and I was pretty scrappy like a mongrel dog. 8 is just my favorite number. I have, however, been thinking about changing my nickname to something cooler.

It’s the name of my number one (of three) cat. I got all their names from sci-fi books so consequently I have no idea how to pronounce it. But it’s never taken and my family can easily remember me. I am so glad that I stopped using my old name a while back because it has connotations of which I was in no way aware of when I started going online-my brother gave it to me because of an old video game, long before I got a computer. I don’t think I would have lasted an hour here with it.

[sub]It was Pit Troll…really.[/sub]

well it’s a little on the pessamistic side. back when the internet gaming zone just started (before it was implemented in the web browser) I was trying to choose a nickname. They had this horrible policy of letting people register as many names as they wanted. So after trying about 20 nicks I got extremely frustrated and just put the first 3 words that fit together. I usually use RubberZucky for my internet nick cause my last name is Zucker and it’s better than Mother Zucker (my friends all seem to like this one - no I’m not a mother - I’m an 18 year old male college student)

Now that you have way more information than you needed I’ll end this post

Skuggi is an Icelandic word meaning “shadow.” I added some letters on to make it more interesting, plus it kind of adds to how this relates to my personality. I don’t feel like explaining the connection it has to my personality, but originally I picked it because I loved the sound and look of the word.

Really boring.
First letter of first name = ‘J’
First two letters of last name = “La”

“J” + “La” when pronounced became JayLa. For some reason it makes some people think I’m male.

Years ago I used the name “michon” (the “mich” is pronounced as in Michelle) and have been toying with the idea of going back to it.

“Gaspode. Named after the famous Gaspode.”

Quote form a talking dog in Pratchett’s ‘Moving Pictures’ and several others.

Most people won’t believe that Gaspode is talking even when they hear him, which seemed somehow appropriate for SDMB.

Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo – a rather eclectic, five kilometer long strip that includes oddball stores, cool pubs, hole-in-the-wall bookstores, and so on. It’s a bright spot in my hometown, a place that’s seen better days.

I really like Jeeps  , so I felt like that was an obvious first choice for my user name.

I added the Phoenix part because I joined here after being involved in a really bad flame war in another forum/message board.

Plus it sounds pretty cool.
