What is Diogenes the Cynic's Condition Called

My problem with what he said in that thread is…

This is a 100% false statement. If some, most, or all of the other traffic on the road is trying to go faster than you are, you are by definition impeding traffic. It’s irrelevant what the speed limit is and how fast you are going and how fast the other traffic wants to go.

This is also a false statement. Going faster or slower than the flow of traffic is more dangerous than speeding. So if everyone on the road is speeding, than not speeding is more dangerous.

Yeah, i too would like some evidence for that assertion.

Nope. That would be Der Trihs.

Dio’s the exact opposite of that ruling.

Ah Dio. He **loves **this.

This is called (in SDMB lingo) Dio-izing the thread, or “*The **Dio *Show”. There are a few other names, but these will do.

He is a master of annoying someone, always, with every post. In fact, that is his goal. If everyone ignored that first comment, the thread would have moved along just fine, but someone always reacts. I’ve been guilty of this myself. And then you realize, after the 40th pit thread on the guy, that this is his on-line persona… created perhaps because his real-life persona isn’t getting him dates. Or something. But he takes an unusual pleasure in continuing to poke his nose into any thread where he gets a reaction.

Let me offer some suggestions.

  1. Put him on ignore. Honestly, he rarely says anything that is so earthshattering or original to make this a bad option. He’s simply the gnat on a hot summer day, flying around your head, annoying the shit out of you, but you are unable to squish it or shake it.

  2. If you choose not to use the ignore function, then read him for what he is… background noise. He loves to word parse, lock in on one position and restate it 30 different ways and watch people get steamed while they try to show him he’s in the wrong. You never can, because:

  3. **Dio **is never wrong.

  4. Remember two items from his personal statistics. 53,617 and 17.53. The first one refers to the total number of posts **Dio **has made since 10-03-2002 (his join date - a bit over 8 years) and the second refers to his average posts per day since he joined. That’s per day. Think about that for a minute. **Dio **isn’t just making “I know you are but what am I?” posts. Many of them are long, rambling verbose posts that take significant time to crank out. What kind of person has that kind of time? Seriously… that’s every day for 8+ years. I think that tells you a lot about **Dio **without even meeting him.

I know he has a background story to explain his ability to post all-day everyday. That’s just noise. The real story will never be known, and it’s not very relevant. What IS relevant is what he does, on average, all day every day for over 8 years on this board. You have to be pretty obsessed with something to put that kind of time into it. No matter what it is.

Think of **Dio **as Les Stroud’s (Survivorman) most important thing to take on a stranding challenge - a multi-tool.

Let it go. The mods are not likely to do anything to **Dio **because being a jerk and being a troll don’t seem to fit **Dio **for some reason. Perhaps it is because his posting style since the beginning of time has been the same… a jerkish troll. Or perhaps he is a business decision. **Dio ***does *generate a lot of traffic on this board, and kicking him off would reduce the number of visits of folks looking to refute a Dio-ism.

There is only so much time in the day. Don’t spend any on Dio, a person you wouldn’t like or interact with in real-life. If you enjoy the board, don’t let him ruin that for you.

I hope you are breathing easier.

It was tomndebb, it was within the last 8 months in GD, and yes it was about Dio. My search-fu is failing me however, and I now regret not saving the post link when I saw it.

I did find a recent post from said moderator which did touch on the subject, tho. The other post I alluded to was even more strongly worded than the one I’ve linked to, however, strongly implying that different rules apply to “established” posters like Dio than they do to relative newbies. Then again perhaps it was this exact post.

I’m pretty sure the universe splits into two, one where you’re correct and one where Dio is. Quantum bullshit.

When are you babies going to learn that somebody disagreeing with you is not trolling. YOU are the tards who constantly hijack threads to whine at me. Monitor your own behavior.

He’s not wrong, you know. You don’t all have to be the living embodiment of xkcd’s cartoon of “someone is wrong on the internet!”

The pattern of [ul]outrageous claim.[]I never said that.[]Okay, I did say that but what I really meant was something else.[]Okay, I already dismissed that something else; what I really meant was this.[]etc.[/ul] is certainly jerkish.

I mean, it’s like he has two modes: “perfectly reasonable” and “poor imitation of Nathan Thurm”. The former raises hardly any eyebrows, if at all; the latter results in a trainwreck and cries of “It’s not me. It’s them!” as above.

Certainly if he didn’t have the “perfectly reasonable” mode we could dismiss him for a loon. I’ve always treated him with some respect since a good percentage of his posts are quite informative and rational. But lately he’s tipping the balance with more and more episodes of “The Dio Show” and it’s just getting too tiresome to put up with. Frankly, I’m having a much harder time taking anything he writes seriously because he’s gone over the edge too many times, and you never know what sets him off. His main thing is that He’s Never Wrong; everything else stems from that. The only problem is that he’s wrong more and more often these days.

I suspect he just needs more fiber in his diet.

Not a single person has disagreed with you or whined at you.

No, they don’t.

Wow, you just made their point for them. It’s not you, it’s everyone else.

I’m just wondering if he’s ever experienced a moment of doubt in his life.

This one time I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

Stink Fish Pot: Thank you for that. I’ve only been around here for a month or so, but I believe I was already beginning to intuitively suspect everything you said in your Dio analysis post# 65, above.

Thanks again for clearing that up!

This is a Bad Idea. The man literally taught me more about Christianity in my short time on this board than I learned after a childhood of churchgoing and a lifetime of Bible reading. Put him on ignore, and you will miss something good.

As a long time fan of the Dio Show (which by the way, isn’t the Dio Show every time someone is losing an argument to him, no matter how many times they claim it is) and of Dio in general, I will echo what I have noticed other posters have pointed out as well (maybe Giraffe was the one that peeped it? I can’t remember now). But the gist of it is, Dio has learned to get the sensitive posters all worked up with his Outrageous Claim to be Clarified Five Pages Later schtick.

Dio: Kittens should be killed
Sensitive Poster: That’s awful. I love kittens. You are a monster.
Dio: No, I’m not a monster. Kittens should be killed
Some Other Sensitive Poster: You, sir, are scum. Killing kittens is animal abuse and animals are sweet angels more precious than dumb humans. They shouldn’t be killed.
Dio: Yes, they should be killed.
SP: I HATE YOU! DO YOU HEAR ME?!! I WILL POST A DOZEN CITES EXPLAINING WHY KITTENS SHOULDN’T BE KILLED! YOU ARE A STUBBORN ASSHOLE!!!
Dio: I don’t get the hate. Your cites don’t say that kittens shouldn’t be killed anyways
SOSP: aims shakey gun You take it back, you son of a bitch. You take it back, or so help me god, I will put your fucking brains all over this thread.

                                        (5 pages later....)

Dio: I don’t get the rage. If a kitten has a non-curable painful disease, it should be humanely euthanized. I will admit that healthy kittens don’t deserve death, but I stand by my statement that kittens should be killed.

Well, kittens should be killed.
