One definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result - everyone is familiar with Dio’s style, everyone is familiar with how these things go, and yet THIS time will be the time that you make him see the light? Have a discussion with him as long as it’s fun for you (I suspect it’s usually fun for him), then drop it. Stop engaging. Go find another thread that interests you. Start your own thread.
What about puppies? Where do you stand on puppies?
(Heh heh - standing on puppies.)
Yeah, I suppose - if your idea of “good” is being entertained in a cyber-null-cerebral-masturbatory way by thread-killing assholes.
The condition is called, “Vikings fan”.
Another suggest for what the condition is called, I’ll offer “Republican”.
Only half serious because it seems that he uses a lot of the strawman arguements that the Republicans used:
“The Patriot Act should be repealed or modified.”
“So you want the terrorists to win!”.
This is all very much like 2001: A Space Odyssey to me - “2011: An SDMB Odyssey.”.
The obelisk (in this case a post from Diogenes) appears. The primates are somehow compelled to approach it, but at the same time it makes them all lose their shit and eventually they start bashing stuff with big bones. The obelisk, however, remains implacable and unyielding.
I can see that this all happens, and it looks like the two things are somehow related, but damn if I can figure out how or why.
Finally, at the end, I conclude “My god, it’s full of tards.”
What impresses me more than anything is Dio’s inability to get bored. Assuming he is not a troll, doesn’t he ever get tired of posting the same damn thing over and over? This guy will rapid-post three times in a row, and just keep going, never letting up for one second. On one page, he’ll be 30% of the posts. When I’m right and everyone else is wrong, I at some point get tired of explaining myself, and just drop it. This guy must drink like 10 cups of coffee before lunch.
Or he’s a troll, and gets his rocks off with this sort of thing. Whichever.
I have always had the policy of not putting anyone on ignore. Anyone. Everyone at some point has the potential to say something great. Ignore is just childish and frankly, in my opinion, if you are putting people on ignore you should just fuck off out of the discussion as you are basically saying “I want to be involved but I will only talk with him, him and him (or her, obviously)”. I have a word for those sort of people: Dicks.
Yay, Hentors here, now its a proper Dio pit thread.
Put him on ignore and you won’t see the start of this thread about Oscars that were deserved but not nominated.
Not quite yet. We still need that one last little element. Wait for it…
Rubidium?
Yeah, because this post:
Remember two items from his personal statistics. 53,617 and 17.53. The first one refers to the total number of posts Dio has made since 10-03-2002 (his join date - a bit over 8 years) and the second refers to his average posts per day since he joined. That’s per day. Think about that for a minute.
really had me thinking about that for a minute. That’s a lotta posts, folks.
As the (so far as I know) originator of the term “The Dio Show”, you’ve nailed it: it’s only “The Dio Show” when he makes an impassioned, blunt statement of his opinion as though it is universal truth, and then defends it like a Jack Russell with a rawhide chew.
“Hentor Syndrome” is the condition of reflexively defending Diogenes solely because he shares your viewpoint more often than not, while claiming it’s because the REST of us are over-inflating his lovable faults.
For 5 seconds, The Fugitive was better than Brazil:
Richard Kimble: I didn’t kill my wife!
Deputy Sam Gerard: I don’t care!
I do think the tendency for this to be a hijack is overrated; a lot of Dio Show threads would basically have been over anyway without it. (The thread that was referenced by the OP is one - once you’ve said “i hate slow left-lane drivers; pass 'em on the right after you’ve given them enough time to shift over”, what more is there to say?)
I concur. The hijack element isn’t the real problem with it, anyway–it’s kind of refreshing, most of the time. The times its problematic are when it’s a thread where there’s serious discussion to be had, but Dio responds as though the subject is closed because his opinion is right, and any examples to the contrary are falsified or deliberate lies or irrelevant.
Not defending him. He’s not right - slow passing lane hogs are assholes, no two ways about it. Try driving through Ohio sometime. Those people are congenitally compelled to ride slow in the fast lane.
As to why you do it, I have no idea. It remains in appearance to me like a bunch of shrieking monkeys freaking out around an immovable object. Unfortunately in the case of the SDMB, it does not typically lead to any meaningful advancement (such as the use of tools). The shrieking and shit-losing seems to be an end unto itself.
Every SINGLE FUCKING time someone pits Dio, I just want to scream “you are pitting the wrong person!”.
You need to pit the dumbasses that respond to his bullshit. If you see a Dio post that is disagreeable, don’t fucking respond. You and everyone else knows what he does to a thread.
I don’t know if he does this on purpose and is a troll (I believe he is) or if it is some mental instability caused by all the pot smoke. But JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, stop responding.
There was a thread about six months ago that that idiot popped in and shat three posts in the thread, no one took the bait, And guess what, he left. Yes ladies and gentlemen, he left. Off he fucked. Instead of turning a nice thread into a 9-page Dio bullshit thread, he actually just fucked off and left.
Until he gets banned for dancing on the troll line once too often, you need to pit the people that respond to his bait.
Now when he is either off his meds or on his meds (I seriously can’t tell which it is) and wants to post something reasonable, then he is fine and can have a reasonable conversation. But when he posts his crap, why are people responding?
I happen to know someone who is a complete troll and his m.o. is to every now and then post in a reasonable manner so he does not look too trollish, I sometimes wonder if Dio isn’t him.
Dio, do you troll Christian message boards too, by any chance? If you do and you recognize my name, can you remember to call Mom next Sunday? It’s her birthday.
I don’t troll.
