What is Diogenes the Cynic's Condition Called

I’d say that is a troll.

No it isn’t.

One thing I’m sure of is that Dio doesn’t troll. “Troll” still doesn’t mean “has strong opinions you don’t like”.

Trolls generally don’t admit to trolling until they get tired of it.

It can mean “posts sincerely held strong opinions for the purpose of attracting attention” though.

Depends on how narrowly “troll” is defined, I suppose. Makes inflammatory statements in order to get a rise out of other posters? Check. Gets off on stirring the hive? Pretty clearly.

Adopts a false persona? Nah, I suspect what we see is what you get. Makes claims he knows to be untrue? I don’t think so.

All trolls are shit-stirrers, but all shit-stirrers are not necessarily trolls.

At the risk of being insufficient in my damnation of this abominable trollman…

The way you describe this, it does sound quite nefarious, what with all the shatting and baiting and off-fucking. I’m just curious, however, what it would have looked like if he had instead read a thread that caught his interest, posted his opinion in three posts, and moved on.

How could you tell the difference, for those of us who want to improve in our ability to spot trolls?

It’s particularly important because given his stats, he is getting away with a ton of baiting that nobody is picking up on! 17.53 posts per day, yet a pit thread about Dio only once every six weeks or so! You see the problem, right? Subliminal trolling!

We must drive the beast out! Get your pitchforks and torches.

Are you posting here to avoid attention?

I’m no attention whore, either.

Yes, it is.

really had me thinking about that for a minute. That’s a lotta posts, folks.

Well, to be fair, I believe he only works on weekends, and the rest of the time is a SAHD.

I never said it wasn’t.

Nobody has ever accused you of trolling.

I don’t post to get attention.

For everyone who is saying “Ignore him” or “Just don’t engage”, how are new posters to this board supposed to know that? The old timers have obviously seen enough to know this, but once in a while, there are newbies who think it’s all genuine discussion until they hit that obstinate wall. But by then, you have the recurring situation of a simple discussion being derailed into pages after page of tedious conversation that have minimal resemblance to the original discussion. And once in a while, there is a subsequent pit thread. Is this some weird rite of passage for the SDMB?

Nope. Wrong on both counts. Never done either of these things and would have no interest in them.

I am always genuine.

Great point! How will they know that they should ignore him unless we tell them that they should?

Why do you post?

You’re being a little obvious here.

Shodan
