What is the highest number of emails you've ever gotten in a day?

In the thread Why am I getting all these emails? Help!, Deadly Nightlight made a reference to how 155 emails was the most he’d ever gotten in a day.

That gave me an idea for a couple of questions to ask you guys:

  1. What is the highest number of emails you’ve ever gotten in one day?

  2. What is the highest number of new emails you’ve ever found when you’ve checked your email? (say, you don’t get to it for a few days or more, and you found more than 300 of them in your inbox) I specify “new emails” in case any of you are like my brother, and never clear your inboxes. Once, he was checking his email when a friend and I were in the room: he had 45 new, but over 500 in his inbox!
For me, the answers would be:

  3. Most emails in one day: around 165 or so

  4. Most new emails in my inbox in an email check: 142 or so

I once got over 800, but that was my own fault.

I was trying to send an email to over 1000 addresses and had written a little application to send them one at a time, since our server wouldn’t cope with sending them all at the same time, and many ISP’s would see them as spam. What I didn’t notice is that the message body (I was doing this for someone else) had a (badly) scanned signature embedded at the bottom, which bought the message size up to 200+Kb. Well, needless to say, they clogged up the firewall and server and I got over 800 “cannot send this message now” responses!! Well, it was a learning experience to say the least!!

Gp

Well, if we count spam, I’ve probably gotten perhaps 50 emails in a day and perhaps 175 new emails in an inbox check. If we don’t count spam…wait, there’s such a thing as email which isn’t spam?

You know that spam for the stuff that whitens your teeth?
The first night that spam was sent out I got

                          210

copies of the same advertisement within 24 hours. They were from different addresses, with a half dozen different subject lines.
That in addition to my regular pile of messages.

I normally get between 20 and 100 e-mails per day. Become a Straight Dope moderator if you feel lonely.

I think the maximum must have been somewhere around 150 or so. And after a couple of weeks away, I’ve had as much as 450.

On average, I get between 150 and 200 emails a day. Most of those can be scanned and deleted. The most I’ve had at one time? Maybe 600 or so, after a vacation where I could only check every 3 or 4 days.

I spend maybe an hour and a half on email every day, many days less than that. I get maybe 20-30 spams in an average day, fwiw.

I once managed to spam myself with over 32,000 messages in one day. And it would have been a lot worse if my office copy of Lotus Notes hadn’t refused to accept any more messages for my inbox after that.

At work I’ve written a number of “watchdog” applications that send either my desktop PC or my pager an email when it perceives that another of my critical applications either has developed a problem or has just recovered from one. One of those watchdog applications had gone berserk, sending my desktop (but fortunately not my pager) a constant stream of “that app is down” - “it’s back up again” - “it’s down again” emails.

(I also accidentally sent a coworker a couple of hundred messages once when somebody set down a book on top of one of my keyboards, which managed to hold down the keyboard’s “Enter” key while an app’s “Send Mail” button was selected and it was a couple of seconds before we noticed it.)

Over 32,000 emails in one day?!? I was going to ask how you did that, but then I read the rest of your post.

Thank goodness I’ve never had 210 copies of the same email! Maybe 10 or so, but nowhere near that number.

The most I’ve ever received in a single day was 107. No spam. All business related. I average between 20-30 a day.

Thanks to a couple of chat lists that I’m on, I’ve gotten over one hundred message in a day, and none of them were spam. I once never bothered to check my school account over summer vacation, and there were over 800 messages in my inbox when I got back.

Most ever in a single day was around 200 when a guy on a mailing list I’m on got some sort of virus that sent out dozens of copies of the same few e-mails. Most in one email check is around a 1000 when I returned home from a two week vacation.

155  and I’m a she

The most I’ve gotten at my important address, twelve emails. On a normal day I get two emails.
At my hotmail account, two hundred something emails. All of them spam. Plus most of the spam messages were fifty kilobytes or greater in size.

I got around 150 e-mails the first time one of my pages got listed on Cruel.com. I’ve never gotten that many at one time since then. I usually get around a dozen messages a day, but I get almost no SPAM and I don’t count that in my totals.

I’m lonely. I’ll do it. Does it pay well?

Late in the evening of September 11th of last year, I realized I’d received nearly 400 e-mails that day. I’m on several mailing lists, two of which were extremely chatty that day. I didn’t think to check how many I received that day in the end, but the next morning there were about 250 waiting for me

I’m terrible about cleaning out my inbox. I won’t delete a message because I want to reply to it, but then I forget to reply, and the messages just add up like that for months. At one point I had 2500 messages in my inbox, almost all of which had been read but not deleted. I’m usually not that bad, honest.

Oops… :o

That’ll teach me to assume everyone on here (unless I know differently) is a guy… :o

Or at least, it’ll teach me not to use the pronoun “he” for people whose usernames are gender-neutral. :o :o

694 in one day.

This was back in the days when “Out of Office Auto Notify” had not yet been designed to reply just ONCE to each sending email address.

A listserv I was on sent a message to “Ooops@imoutatheoffice.com”, ooops@ autoreplied to the listerv that they were out of the office. The listerv forwarded “Ooops is out of the office” to everyone on the listserv, including Ooops. Ooops then autorelied to listserve which forwarded the message, and so on for 600 messages until the list moderator stopped it.

It was actually kind of funny, but only because I have a huge mailbox at work.

The other 94 messages consisted of listserv members posting:

  1. Ooops is a jerk!
  2. Ooops, stop that!

One.

I usually get none, so this was a big thing. Boy, those were the days.

Its ok, I know Deadly Nightlight is not screaming “I am a chick”
I also got 8 emails today, Strangley I feel less a woman after getting 155.
