I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the State Line Potato Chips of my youth.
Rt. 11 chips are great. I especially dig the Sweet Potato chips.
Only Ruffles for me. I don’t like unrippled chips, and Wavy Lays are too gently-waving for me.
Right now I lurve Ruffles Sour Cream and Cheddar the best. Past winners have included regular Ruffles (with French onion dip), Barbeque, and Sour Cream and Onion.
As far as slogans go, though, I like “Make Herr’s Yours” best.
My former favourites were O’Gradys. Flavour you could hang your hat on. Pity they stopped making them though.
I do like Baked Lays though – very nice flavour, a delicate yet unmistakable saltiness that goes really well with the flavour of the chip.
I’ve also been partial to Old Dutch Extreme. I’m not usually partial to the “budget” brands but these aren’t that bad – well flavoured. I haven’t seen them around lately though.
I try and avoid chips these days though – I’ll indulge once in a while but my self-imposed diet tells me these are evil.
Cape Cod (Kettle) Sea Salt & Pepper
When they have those World’s Strongest Man competitions and the guy is pulling a semi up a hill, there’s a dude just off camera holding out a bag of these chips.
Tim’s cracked black peppercorn for me. Not just cracked: crack. Mmm.
We don’t have a lot of variety around here, but I do like Lay’s Kettle Cooked Jalapeno. Hiland is a regional brand and is nice and greasy, but not salty enough.
What ever happened to Tim’s Dill Pickle Potato Chips? Those were heavenly.
Good old Jay’s. Yet again we Chicagoans deliver perfection in junk food.

Prompted by a thread on “kettle-chips” in GQ. What is your favorite? Brand, style, flavor? For me, it’s Tim’s Cascade Brand, and the Habanero or Alder Smoke BBQ for flavor.
this is one of those imponderables, simply because of the impracticalities involved. I’ve never heard of Tim’s Cascade Brand - they’ve got to be something available locally. If you’re willing to send me a bag of chips for double-blind testing, then that’s another matter. For consistency, availability combined with a definite hankering, I would suggest Sour Cream & Onion Pringles; but they are a bit cloying after a while. Tho by no means “the best”; they are available and deployable. I remember Jays potato chips, haven’t seen them in years, they are sort of the Quisp of potato chips around here. Pure Ambrosia. So-called kettle chips are good, but I suspect the flavorfulness of chips, similar with French Fries, is in good portion due to the type of oil that is used for frying.
I remember reading somewhere, not sure if it’s true - that Canola oil, aka rapeseed, is a derivative of the paint industry in that when synthetics became commonplace it was considered obsolete, and so was turned into a foodstuff, and not considered a very healthful oil compared to other fats.
Lately, I’ve been eating Mike-sell’s Old Fashioned chips, but the Meijer store brand kettle chips are pretty solid too.
When you’re in the Dayton, OH area you must eat Mike-sell’s Potato Chips.
And when you’re in Urbana, OH you eat Mumford’s Potato Chips.
Better than “Nibble with Gibble’s”? Eh, they’re both great.
I love this board.
Herrs Steak and Worcestershire sauce chips. A vegetable that tastes like meat! It’s a dream come true! ::sniff::
I’ll second that - they are extremely good! Not sure why I forgot to put them in my favorites list in my other post.
