What the Sanford affair means

He’s floundering enough as it is.

Quit monkeying around.

This thread has gone to the dogs.

Agreed, so what do you think we otter do about it?

I have debates like this with my right-wing brother.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions.

(I can sense the moderators getting impatient. “Isn’t this supposed to be a debate Scylla? Where’s the debate?” I’m getting there, so just hang on.)

Still waiting…

It could be that, being a hippy chick, she has no experience with virile, hard-headed conservative men, and is struck dumb by overwhelming lust.

Well, it could! Its possible!

I’ve seen more recent pics. If she were a friend’s wife, I’d say she was very attractive. Otherwise, she’s just a reasonably well-preserved woman for her age, not a knockout by any standard.

It seems to be a debating style that is unfortunately all too common. When confronted by the ugly fact of “your guy” in politics being a hypocritical ass, Scylla apparently feels that the debate should go like this:

[ul]
[li]1. Say something completely incorrect and “so stupid”. This confuses your opponent, and forces them to waste time searching for cites that refute your stupid comment.[/li]
[li]2. Accuse your opponent of being blindly partisan. You don’t need proof - just accuse them to throw them off balance.[/li]
[li]3. Come up with a bizarre theory that shows that you lack fundamental morals (It’s OK to cheat on your wife as long as the mistress is hot)[/li][/ul]

I mean, this is pretty much a template for many of the arguments and discussion with certain right-leaning posters around here.

You do realize that, regardless of how wrong-headed Scylla’s politics are (and by my standards, they’re about as wrong-headed as they can be), he posted this with his tongue firmly in his cheek, right?

I saw this thread title and hoped for talk of a junkyard, Lamont and Aunt Esther :frowning:

Lamont and Aunt Esther were having an affair???

It’s the big one, Elizabeth! I’m coming to join ya, honey!

Do not accuse posters of trolling outside the BBQ pit.

OK. Since no debate ever actually broke out, (or was, I suspect, intended), I’m sending this off to MPSIMS.

Thanks, tomndebb. I’ll look for something equally exciting to send you back.

The thing that amuses me most about this thread (and the affair itself) is that everyone views it as partisan. It’s not. Some dicks have an (R) and some dicks have a (D), and they’re no more or less dickish because of that parenthetical letter.

The only difference between Sanford’s affair and Clinton’s is that Clinton had his affair with a subordinate who worked for him–a firing offense in most businesses, universities, and so forth. Sanford had his with some foreign chick, which makes it “only” a moral issue, not a legal one.

Did you forget about the part of Sanford abandoning his duties to go bang said foreign chick. Going AWOL for a week is a firing offense anywhere, AFAIK.

Since this is in the pointless bucket now, it is worth pointing out that Clinton essentially took the favors offered him during times of utter stress that most of us can hardly fathom. This hardly excuses the man, but I think it’s reasonable to assert that Monica was more like a quick stress valve than a full-on affair with any investment of intimacy or resources. The equivalent of a businessman having a quickie on a rough sales trip, as opposed to the “dual life” type of imbroglio.

Sanford, on the other hand, put more energy into his Argentinian relationship than a lot of people put into their marriages.

Ask his wife, she may disagree. A divorce is a legal issue. For her, this is much worse than casual sex. The soulmate thing had to hurt his wife badly.
Taking time off the job and slipping out to have a tryst in South America a few times is a firing offense.

I agree with both of you that he deserves to be fired for skipping out on work. But not directly for the affair. It really doesn’t matter whether you disappear for a week because you’re having a tryst, hiking, watching TV, or practicing the guitar: it’s the disappearing that matters.

I’ll take your word on that, Invisible one.

In my opinion, cheating on your wife is especially dickish if you’ve spent the last ten years proclaiming your moral values and decrying those of your political opponents. Republicans are pretty much the only ones who do that.
