What to put on a bagel?

Toasted with garlic butter. And as a Hawaiian resident, I’m obligated to say, “a nice pineapple round - matches up perfectly with the bagel”. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Egg salad is good on bagels.

That’s my philosophy with pizza, too - the worse the crust, the stronger the toppings. If a pizza place is really good, I won’t order anything more complicated than a Margherita.

Does anyone actually serve bagels with pineapple? It’s true about the shape, but … yuck.

True story anyone from Hawai’i will appreciate: there was a very high end B&B near our house that had a withering Yelp review complaining that they served canned pineapple, not fresh. My first thought was, “that dumbass reviewer can’t tell fresh from canned - they think because they were served a perfect ring, it has to be canned.” Of course, as those of us with frequent access to fresh pineapples know, there is a simple pineapple coring tool that yields flawless rings.

Years later, I got to know the B&B owners and asked them about that review. They still remembered it and yes, of course the idiot who wrote it had been served fresh pineapple.

Canned pineapple and fresh pineapple are two separate, equally tasty things. It’s like pickles and cucumbers.

We just cored one the other day. Now I’m thinking of getting a Costco bagel (not bad) out, toasting it, and adding a couple of rings for a pineapple sandwich. Maybe add a sharp cheese for contrast … or banana slices for a fruit sandwich. No kidding.

Love that comparison. It’s true. Pineapples are definitely on the list of things that are good when canned - but as you say, two different things.

Yeah, i don’t think they are as different as pickles and cucumbers, but i agree that they are both good and they are very different.

Also, the quality of fresh pineapples varies enormously. My husband cuts up one to bring to a square dance every week, and they vary from breathtakingly good to pretty bland.

Pineapple on a bagel? What is this new devilry?

Do you spread cream cheese on the bagel with that, or ??? What sort of bagel gets used for this - I cannot imagine a savory one, but ???

It’s not vegetarian but the only thing you are missing is whitefish salad.

Make it a rainbow bagel and you’ll summon Lucifer himself.

Blofeld stroking the cat: “My alliance with BIG PINEAPPLE has succeeded in derailing the thread. Bwahahahaha”

Blue cheese, walnuts, and diced apple were my impromptu toppings the last time I was left at home with a naked bagel. It hit the spot.

I think if I put on a smear of goat cheese, sautéed spinach with minced garlic, a little diced tomato and a poached egg on a plain bagel, that might work as a good combination. I did it with a homemade dinner roll and none of the contents sluiced over the side so I think it could work out.

I like to make “pizza bagels”… but not in the way most people make them, where it’s just a pizza on a bagel instead of a crust.

I start by slicing and toasting the bagel. Then I top with pepperoni and stick it under the broiler for a minute or two, so the pepperoni curls up and the fat renders into the bagel. I then remove the pepperonis, apply cream cheese, and top with the pepperonis and some jalapeno slices.

That sounds great with your combo there. Oh yes!

Butter, cream cheese, and jalapenos.

Or just butter and cream cheese.

Or just butter.

mmm

I have to rep the hood and say PEC SPK. Pork roll, egg and cheese. Salt, pepper, ketchup. Definitely not vegetarian but it’s my culture. (I actually only like ketchup on a couple of things and that’s not one of them. I leave it off and just put on salt and pepper)

Is it ok if I cry out “Cultural Appropriation!” right about now?

Sure. But I reserve my right to never allow lox to pass my lips. Nasty, slimy stuff.

I just went to my freezer and told my bagels, “it’s okay. Those nasty Dopers can’t hurt you with their pineapple and blue cheese.”
Oy vey.
