Philip Catherine - ‘Summer Night’: A fairly typical set from Belgian’s fat funky chicken-impersonating guitarmeister. Alternating wistful wandering jazz with upbeat chunkiness.
At Xmas, I received:
Phil Robson - ‘Impish’: And indeed, Phil looks suitably impish on the back cover. Somewhat self-indulgent fusiony jazz, a la John Scofield.
Wes Montgomery - ‘The absurdly overhyped omnipotent guitar mastery of Wes Montgomery’: Well, the title’s something like that. Haven’t listened to it yet, but it’s supposed to be a good 'un, at least according to The Bible (aka Cook & Morton’s guide to Jazz on CD).
As I get older, I find my musical tastes are getting more varied, and more experimental. E.g., I’ve been wandering through the Runegrammofon back catalogue, in the hope of becoming an adopted Norwegian minmalist, and the Jazzland catalogue in the hope of becoming a funky Norwegian. Hooray for Norwegians!
