What We Do in the Shadows Season 6

Off to a pretty good start. I like The Vampire Jerry.

Earlier threads:

Will watch tonight on Hulu. I’m glad they are wrapping it up on their own terms. I think it is funny, but can only go so far.

Series 1 through 5 are on Disney+ in the UK, but 6 hasn’t appeared there yet. Is Hulu affiliated with Disney+, Amazon Prime, or somewhere else?

Yes, Hulu is owned by Disney and they often share content.

Yes, in the US you can get ad-free Hulu within the Disney+ app. It’s kinda funny that things like American Horror Story and Titane can be watched in Disney.

“Moooom, can I put a movie on??? It’s on Disney!!!”

:kid puts on Titane:

The UK Disney+ has just released the new adaptation of Rivals. I never expected to hear the C word on Disney! Nor did I expect full frontal nudity.

I like Businesswoman Nadia.

Nandor trying to clean things with a roll of paper towels… Not a paper towel, but an entire roll as if it’s a giant sponge… That is maybe my favorite thing this season.

I’m enjoying it a bunch, and I’m really happy to see that Dave Foley got another gig.

I rewatched the whole series just for something spooky and funny for Halloween time. I’m not really loving S6. It’s not awful but it’s just not making me laugh as much. it feels tired and unfocused. If it was going to continue after this season, I’d still watch, but as it’s ending, it’s kind of sad it feels like it’s deflating instead of going out with a bang. I do expect the last episode or two will be better.

He’s not credited with a role on the show, who did he play?

Anyway, in the most recent episode there was a couplet of dialog between Laszlo and Nadja that I think shows how brilliant the writing is.

Nadja: “Are you saying that I’m an idiot?!”
Laszlo: “Of course not, what an idiotic thing to say.”

That just seemed to encapsulate their relationship perfectly, and for some reason I couldn’t stop cracking up. Matt Berry’s delivery also helps immensely.

Waitaminute, I’m certain he played Jerry the super-sleeping vampire who’s taking the “dominate North America” assignment seriously. Are you saying that’s NOT him?

Yeah, not only is it not him, it doesn’t look or sound like him. Jerry is played by Michael Patrick O’Brien.

This is Dave Foley, who is one of the Daves I know. (Not personally, I wish.)

Michael Patrick O’Brien hasn’t been in a lot of high profile things as an actor, but he might be best known as the creator of the TV show AP Bio.

(O’Brien is also 13 years younger than Foley.)

I have to admit I’m kind of feeling the same way. I used to find the show delightfully, absurdly funny. Now the first few episodes of this season have me going ‘meh’. I don’t know if it’s the show or just me. Maybe the novelty of the concept has just worn off.

I didn’t think Jerry was Dave Foley, but I can kind of see that. O’Brien has one of those faces where you think ‘what else did I see this guy in?’ I IMDB’ed him and nothing he’s acted in really made me say ‘oh yeah, that’s where I saw him before’.

I had the same reaction and nothing really stood out when I looked him up.

I thought he almost looked like Ken Marino when I first saw Jerry.

Dave Foley has a distinctive way of speaking that I’ve always thought of as “very Canadian” in every role I’ve seen him play (aside from maybe a couple of Kids in the Hall sketches) so for me the thought never crossed my mind. And he’s looking pretty old these days.

I enjoyed the new episode (6x06) more than last week.

Some episodes early in the current sixth season weren’t really very funny but I’ve enjoyed the recent ones. This week’s episode (the ninth of the season, called “Come Out and Play”) is particularly good, though it helps to be familiar with what it’s an homage to.

Only two more episodes after this, with the finale on December 16.

‘The Warriors’ is the first R-rated movie I was able to sneak into the theater to see (I was 14), so I am familiar with the source matter, and I did very much enjoy the WWDITS parody / homage.

I about died at the cameo at the end. Such a delightful surprise.
