Sage Rat got in over his head in Great Debates on the fate of the Israelites. He thought Anatolia was Turkish back in 1200 BCE. (For reference, the Turks arrived in Anatolia in 1077 CE. Battle of Manzikert.) His flippant attitude toward facts:
Sorry, in general, I’m just not terribly fussed about ethic lineage relative to physical location, language, culture, etc. That seems to screwing me up in this conversation.
Facts, who needs ‘em? Damn party poopers always interjecting facts when we’re trying to have a conversation.
I do not believe Sage Rat is as careless about the truth as he implies there. I think he just blurted something to cover his embarrassment at being corrected.
Sorry, sorry - had to be done . It makes absolutely no difference to your post, just a variant of Gaudere’s Law. Also, yes I did just slap myself for knowing that off the top of my head and having the irresistible urge to post a correction (but I double-checked to be sure).
Thank you. Got contaminated by all the talk about 1177 BC, Late Bronze Age Collapse. Well, I’d rather be 6 years off than be 2,000 light years from home.
I knew it too, and when I wrote “1077” I felt a tiny burr in the back of my mind telling me to verify before posting, but I ignored it in my rush to post. It’s very important to listen to those little burrs in the back of your mind when forgetting something. Every time I was grocery shopping and I ignored the tiny mind-burr, I’d get home to discover I’d forgotten something. They’re subtle but pretty reliable.
To be fair that happens to me at work about 50 times a day and I listen to that little voice maybe 10 times. The other 40 times, oh well. Pobody’s nerfect.
You made me go check my bookcase - ten books on Byzantine history. You’d be utterly unshocked how often this topic comes up at parties. Now, you might be slightly shocked I’ve ever been invited to a party. But hey it was my birthday that one time, how are they gonna stop me ?
I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt and assume Ryan_Liam belongs here, not in the troll thread (despite his history of racism - but AFAIK that was when he was a callow baby) but his coy posting in the IMHO “the Black view of the world” he started is really starting to rankle. And the thread was looking skeevy from the get-go as it was.
That one was a bit surprising to me too. I took it as sort of an “equal time” thread to the equally misguided thread somebody else has going about “white culture”. Which I note he has not posted to.
Between him being Irish or English (I forget which), having a messed up relationship w a Filipino or Viet Namese woman (I forget which), having overtly racist parents shunning them both, being sorta socially challenged, etc., he’s got a lot of unhealthy baggage in this department.
Which might explain, but does not excuse, his decision to start the thread, and his ongoing tone in it.
Interesting conversation all, but you should really get a room (or your own thread).
If one of you creates it, I’m sure we can impose on @miller to move it, or I’ll do it as a favor since it’s something of a chore (as Miller expressed when ya’ll asked about @What_Exit doing it).
A thread about the 40th Anniversary of the loss of the space shuttle Challenger turns into a Durp fight about the definition of “explosion” and what parts of the aircraft constitute the actual “Challenger”.
