Went out for a burger cooked rare topped with blue cheese and a side of coleslaw. Appetizer was dates stuffed with ricotta and spinach, wrapped in bacon with a balsamic glaze. Afterward, my daughter gave me some Bailey’s Irish Cream truffles.
Very nice looking dinner! I’m sure that steak was marvelously tasty! My only tiny criticism is that the baked potato with sour cream looks naked without either chives or finely chopped scallions! But that’s kind of a personal foible – I tend to put chopped scallions on everything, but especially noodles and potatoes.
I’ve now gone through all the prepared dinners I mentioned earlier, plus sandwiches and other goodies. All the dinners were good, as I expected, but FTR the best was the Chicken Souvlaki with tzatziki and rice – definitely getting that one again! So at last it’s time to break open the vac-pack of Montreal smoked meat and prepare a toasted onion bun. Fortunately, there’s still lots of Forest Mushroom soup to have with it, and also Greek salad.
I would if it weren’t for the fact that the filet mignons were $36.99/lb!
The birthday dinner looks absolutely delicious. We simply did bacon, eggs, and English muffins tonight.
Oh, completely granted, I don’t think I buy steak more than once or twice a year at current prices, well, at least if I’m paying for it. Once even Top Sirloin went to $12.99 a pound it just wasn’t worth it even for “cheaper” cuts.
I want to reach into the picture and steal the plate.
Tonight, Piano Piano artisinal pepperoni pizza, baked on a pizza stone.
Unlike other frozen pizzas, it comes out looking just like the pic on the box, and tastes as good as it looks!
Now, now, there are plenty that look like the box pics, especially if you stick to cheese only pizzas. I will grant I almost never see a meat-topped pizza that comes out looking nearly as good.
I don’t eat pizza, I have a weird psychosomatic issue with it, but my wife loves Screamin’ Sicillian “Bessie’s Revenge” which is a cheesy wonder.
That hasn’t been my experience with other pizzas, even those that claim “gourmet” status. The two Piano Piano types I’ve tried really do (the other is mushrooms and caramelized onions in a cream sauce on a sourdough crust). In fact, the swirls of rich mozzarella and tomato sauce and pepperoni create the complex tastes of more toppings than are actually there! I don’t usually enjoy plain pepperoni pizzas unless I add more toppings to them, but this one is a winner just as is!
After the previous post, I was briefly contemplating either spaghetti with a nice garlic sauce and meatballs, both from the same deli, or Buffalo wings and fries. But nah, I’m sticking with the pizza. The pizza stone is in the oven, ready and waiting to be pre-heated to hotter than hell!
Well then, as often stated, YMMV! Again, to the extent that I disagreed, it’s mostly cheese only pizzas that can make the claim. And my wife, the pizza eater, would agree, with MOST other pizzas (Digiorno and Freschetta being middle of the road but not gourmet examples) she also has to doctor with additional cheese and other help. If I can remember, the next time she does the Screamin’ pizza, I’ll take a pic post baking and we can ask others to weigh in.
Tonight I’m indulging my love of Chinese food. I ordered my two favourite dishes from a very good (and very busy) local takeout, Singapore noodles and pork lo mein. (A few years ago I posted a picture of Singapore noodles here – they’re curried thin rice noodles with shrimp, onions, peppers, and other good stuff. Huy Fong chili garlic sauce and a dash of soy sauce are excellent condiments for them.) The lo mein is notable for its tender thick noodles and rich sauce complementing whatever the main ingredient is. For me, pork works best.
The portions are huge and there’s no way I could have more than half of just one of them, but they’ll keep.
I ordered early so I could settle down with a few drinks before a late dinner (I refuse to drive after even one drink, and I greatly dislike ordering for third-party delivery). So the huge portions are currently in the fridge, with the fridge working overtime trying to cool it all down!
Yesterday was sautéed calf liver and a romaine salad.
I’ve had a bit of spare time recently so I figured I’d try something new, behold!
Homemade spring rolls with rice wrappers from the local Asian market, stuffed with romaine, green onions, cilantro, and cold rice noodles, topped with pan-seared shrimp (seasoned with lime, salt, garlic, and a touch of cayenne for kick). Little bit of Thai-style sweet chili sauce on the side.
Note, I’m not including the image of the first one I rolled and totally screwed up with (still tasty), but these are the next four.
Looks perfect!
Those look vaguely similar to (but probably much better than!) the local supermarket’s Thai spring rolls: Not only better, I’m sure, but I admire the ability to “roll your own”! I’d never have attempted it!
Anyway, dinner tonight will reap the benefits of my getting two of my favourite Chinese dishes back on Thursday, and the benefits of a very cold fridge. For on this dark and rainy night, in which I would never venture out, I will be having Singapore noodles from the haul I brought in on Thursday. With a few dabs of Huy Fong chili garlic sauce, and consumed with chopsticks just for the challenge and authenticity (I suck at using chopsticks!).
Beans and wieners.
A big salad with lettuce, kale, radicchio, pepitas, and blueberries with balsamic vinaigrette.
Delicious fish and chips from Cannon’s Corner.
I had the advantage from working from a pretty good guide!
I made German apple pancakes, I’d never done them before. I was a bit under whelmed, but I looked up a different recipe, and I will try them again.
