Yes. Those are actually hand-me-down plates from my parents that I’m still using. They probably date from the 1970s.
We just had our “dinner”. We eat our main meal at midday, because we’re too old to digest a big meal at night.
I made an oyster stew. It’s pretty simple: sauteed shallots in butter, rich milk, clam juice, oysters cut up and poached in their own liquor, and then added to the milk mixture. A little salt and a couple of drops of lemon juice, and there you have it. I served it up in big fancy soup plates, sprinkled with parsley and paprika, and we had a brown-n-serve sourdough loaf on the side.
It was fantastic, and there are leftovers. Why is oyster stew such a rarity nowadays? We go to restaurants on the Tomales Bay in northern California, an area that is aswim with oysters, but I have yet to see anyone serve oyster stew. It’s a good way to use those bigger oysters that are unsuitable to eat on the half shell or even barbecued.
Yesterday I had an ahi tuna poke bowl for dinner.
Do not turn up your gourmand nose at frozen pizzas – some of them have come a long way in recent years. Tonight will be President’s Choice slightly smoky wood-fired pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, and green pepper to which I will add red onion and sliced tomatoes and bake in a hot oven on a pizza stone.
It may turn out slightly different than usual because of my fridge problems – stuff in the freezer is just barely frozen. New fridge arriving on Friday! This is part of my effort to empty out as much of the freezer as possible.
I threw together a soup last night, and we had leftovers this evening. Ground beef, crushed tomatoes, carrots, green beans, cauliflower rice, beef broth, some garlic, etc. I added some sour cream & a drizzle of honey because I thought it was too acidic. It was ok, and better tonight. Next time, I think I’ll do chicken instead of the ground beef.
I have guests for dinner tonight so dinner will be less boring than usual. Striploin roast, garlic mashed potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, Yorkshire pudding, and hunter gravy. Notice the absence of vegetables, unless you count the potatoes or 'shrooms. I’m not a veggie fan and my guests will dine accordingly! Besides, with the roast, mashed, mushrooms, and Yorkshire, there’s hardly room on the plate for anything more!
With the boycott of American liquors, dinner will be served with a fine Canadian ripasso, a Cabernet-style wine that has undergone a second fermentation over grape skins formerly used for robust wines, which adds depth and character to the wine. I’ve had this wine before and it’s not only wonderful, but was on sale today!
ETA: Forgot to mention, “The Keg” brand of exquisitely hot horseradish as a garnish for the beef.
Room for one more? ![]()
Tonight’s going to be easy because I spent too long doing yardwork and other physical chores and I’m wiped out. There’s an excellent poke bowl place just up the street, and that’s where I’m headed (again). Plus, I’ve been told I’m not getting enough protein, so with extra ahi tuna, edamame, and crab (or krab?) salad in it, I’m covered in that department. I get it with greens and seaweed instead of rice, so it’s a good low-carb, nutritious meal. And I don’t have to do anything except pick it up.
Tortilla soup that I’d made before and frozen. I seem to be on a soup kick, now if the weather would get cooler, I’d be happy!
Last night’s dinner was wonderful, and I was lucky to find a fairly small striploin roast, because lord a’mighty, those things are not cheap! Some of the bigger ones had prices that seemed more appropriate for a down payment on a house! But as a result of the thing being small, there is only one thick piece as a leftover. And no gravy left, since we all made piglets of ourselves, and I’m not gonna make gravy for just one slice of roast.
But my other purchase yesterday was from the hot food buffet, which was a bunch of sausages and fried onions. No, I’m not having that tonight, but to go with them, I got some fancy hot dog buns. So tonight will be the leftover roast beef on a hot dog bun warmed up with a few of the leftover mushrooms and some of the fried onions, and of course lots of Dijon mustard and some hot horseradish.
Tonight was dinner out. Acorn squash stuffed with ground lamb, fennel, red kale, leeks, rainbow chard, mushrooms, and onion, finished with balsamic reduction, served with a side Caesar salad. It was excellent, with enough left over for tomorrow’s dinner.
Tonight my sweetie made Italian sausage and penne pasta smothered in homemade marinara. After a day of yard work, It was delicious and exactly what I needed. Leftovers for at least one tomorrow.
I was trying to do something different tonight. So I had 2 large red bell peppers that I topped, and chopped the remnants around the stem. I also diced 4 roasted peublo chiles, 2 shallots, 4 cloves and four cloves of garlic. I par-roasted the seeded red bell peppers upside down in the air fryer.
I then cooked about 6 oz of a beef/pork ground meat blend, until it was lightly browned, and then used the fat to soften the vegetation. I stirred in about a cup’s worth of instant faro we had left over from earlier cooking, and seasoned everything with salt, cayenne pepper, green chile powder, and some hot traditional chili power. Added a splash of chicken stock for extra moisture and to make sure the spices were hydrated.
Once only very warm to the touch, I stuffed the peppers, topped with some queso fresca, and baked on 325F for 12 minutes, and broiled for 4.
I should probably have added more salt, and mixed in come of the cheese with the mix to keep it all together better, but it was tasty. I ate one tonight, and put the other in the fridge for an easy meal later in the week. Since the filling is so loose, I’ll probably dump it, mix in the last of the queso fresca, and reheat like my 20/20 hindsight suggested!
I just received from Amazon a couple of “taco racks”, which are zig-zaggy shaped metal racks so you can stand your crispy tacos upright on your plate. So, this being Tuesday, I decided we’d have Taco Tuesday to take advantage of the new racks.
I made the classic Tex-Mex kind of taco filling, the ground beef with chili flavoring, and added little potato cubes to the mixture. I fried up homemade crispy taco shells and built tacos with the shells, filling, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and guacamole. The racks were awesome - the tacos stood upright and retained their filling nicely. And the racks are stainless steel and will go in the dishwasher just fine.
(edit mine)
Dang, I haven’t done that in years, but it’s the best crispy taco shell. You deserve a medal.
I’ve had those taco racks used in some restaurants. Maybe I’ll ask for some for my birthday.
Tonight will be maple-glazed pork tenderloin, from an America’s Test Kitchen recipe.
I made a few minor changes, and I don’t use the bourbon/brandy or cinnamon.
As it turned out, there was leftover gravy on the table that I hadn’t noticed, which I promptly put in the fridge. So dinner last night was actually a very nice repeat of the previous night’s roast beef, a nice thick slice, hunter gravy, mashed potatoes, only a few leftover mushrooms, and the super-hot horseradish. And, as it also turned out, a half bottle of really nice wine, as my guests were not heavy drinkers.
That now gone, dinner tonight will be sausages in a bun with sauteed onion and yellow mustard, hot dog style. What kind of sausages? The kind that were in a big tray at the hot food buffet at the supermarket, that’s all I know. But they’re very tasty. Tomorrow: more sausage, but with baked mac & cheese. Comfort foods all around!
I dropped in to my favourite little deli last night because I was in the area, so why not? Late lunch last night was a chicken Caesar wrap with Caesar salad dip. Dinner after that was, eh, just some taco chips and Mexican 7-layer dip.
There are cabbage rolls and tomato sauce for tonight, but no, I cannot resist the amazing store-made "deluxe’ pizza they had – it just looks and smells so great even through the plastic. It doesn’t even come with cooking directions but who cares – it will go in a very hot oven on a pizza stone and I’ll watch it until it’s ready. I’ve had it before and it was wonderful.
I just don’t make it up to that little deli often enough!
“Dinner” today was small loin lamb chops, fresh string beans, and potato balls. This latter dish is one of my favorites. I peel two big russets, and using a melon baller, scoop out as many little potato globes as I can get out of them. Then I fry the little globes slowly in hot peanut oil and a little butter until they’re tender, and at the last minute turn up the heat high so they get brown and crusty. Today I sprinkled them with minced rosemary and raw garlic when they were still piping hot. Man, they went with the chops well.
Dinner last night was Pad See Ew which somebody conveniently left for me in my fridge!
Tonight will be some smoked pork chops along with some form of apples - either stewed or applesauce, haven’t decided which yet.
