What's for supper?

Egg foo yung with scallions and peas and soy-ginger rice, both homemade

Last night was ham, cabbage, and potatoes. It never sounds very appetizing but then everyone scarfs it down!

Tonight, chicken pineapple tacos.

I am having some fellow Chicago expatriates over tonight to watch the Series. In keeping with the theme of the event I am offering all the fixings for Chicago dogs, a couple of deep dish pizzas, and ice cold Heileman’s Old Style in the can.

I was in Barcelona last week on one of those dream vacations where the restaurants seem to get better from one night to the next.

On the last night, I ordered a “Typical Catalonian Dish” which turned out to be:

Chopped cooked cabbage and potatoes in the center of the platter, ringed by:

A LOT of sauteed chanterelle mushrooms, and crisply-fried slices of bacon, with:

A barely-poached egg yolk resting on on the cabbage-potato mixture.

I chopped into the yolk and let it run down into the cabbage, and then we all helped ourselves.

I have NO IDEA why this would be typical of Catalonia (never thought of it as a big cabbage-land), but it was fantastic.

Giordano’s does mail order! When is Christmas again?

Tonight? I had Chinese for lunch so I am stuffed. “Dinner” will probably be ice cream sundaes while playing Scrabble.

Last night was dinner at our favorite Mexican place. Tonight’s menu is skillet-cooked BBQ chicken filets, mashed potatoes with brown gravy and fire-roasted niblet corn. Tomorrow is a tournament day, so dinner will probably be Subway on the way home.

Leftover pot-roast from the other night. Beef heart, potatoes, carrots, onions, poblano peppers.

Pan-fried chicken breasts (flour and spice coating, butter in the pan), some potato smily faces to entice the Cub to the table, and a salad. Lute music playing on the iPod, and a bottle of IPA Tankentstein for the Halloween season.

Leftover buffalo wings with the same fixings.

I turned a corner today. I woke up feeling happy. I’m not repulsed by the idea of eating. It’s day 8 on Atkins. 4.2 pounds down.

Veal scallops sauteed in butter and olive oil with a vermouth-caper-lemon pan sauce. (Delicious but terribly expensive. Why don’t I do this with chicken or turkey cutlets?)

Gratin Savoyard made with Irish cheddar because I had nothing like a Gruyere in the house. (Not so good. I will go out for Gruyere next time).

Belgian endive braised in chicken stock. (too bitter, buy smaller endives next time)

Several glasses of red Bordeaux. Ukulele Lady drank a chilled Greuner Veltliner instead; she prefers white wine.

I’m still getting over the cold I had last week. I was wondering what to have for dinner, and I thought, ‘Baked potatoes. Two baked potatoes with butter and salt and pepper.’

So I made chili.

Beef stew. I love the first chill of the year because it mean stew season is here.

I misread that as “I love the first chili of the year.”

Did you think it was going to be a very difficult diet to stick to before you started it? Because it sounds kind of good…

I thought it would be fairly easy for me. I have PCOS with hypoglycemia, and it’s supposed to be particularly good for that. Also, if you do traditional Atkins, you’re encouraged to eat whenever you’re hungry.

But I am came in here to cap off my entries: this morning was the third day in a row with no weight loss. During induction, the strictest, and supposedly fastest-losing, part. I have been hungry, grumpy, anxious, and sad ever since I began. Last night I had a hot-mess, can’t-stop-sobbing breakdown at bedtime–I mean, postpartum level can’t-control-my-emotions.

So I am now off Atkins. I stuck to it for ten days. If I’m not dropping weight daily, though, there’s no point. I can break my heart and suffer less. I’m now drinking a latte.

Wow. Well, I hope you feel better!

My own Chicken curry with yogurt and basmati rice. (Chicken, onion, poblano pepper, coconut, raisins, guava paste)

Lebanese:

Kibbeh, humus, stuffed grape leaves, shawarma…

Saturday: grab some KFC takeout…or at least that was the plan before I discover the empty building (complete with windows covered with newspaper and all of the signage gone) where the KFC used to be. Quick detour to McDonald’s…

Sunday: leftover lasagne from Friday

Monday: if it’s Monday, then it’s leftover pizza night, just as Tuesday is meatball sub & mac & cheese night

Since I was too busy (lazy) to make it to the grocery store, I’m stopping by my local pub and picking up a fish slider and fries. Not terribly exciting I know, but they make excellent sliders and they are only a buck.
