So there I am, checking out some merchandise, and the clerk asks if she can touch my jacket. (I have metal plates on my leather) I let her and she taps away. We keep eye contact and she wishes me a Merry Christmas.
Fast Forward about an hour, and I’m back in the store, this time picking up a card, and again I am in her line. She wonders where her card is, and I say something not too clever like, “This may be for you…” We continue with the eye contact, and she flashes this big ol’ smile at me.
Now here’s where the etiquette question comes in. Is it appropriate to ask someone out in this situation. I’ve always felt it was rude to do, since often people are being their “Professional nice” and to me, it seems kind of tacky, though if the roles were reversed, I’d love for someone to ask me out.
Give me your insights…
Oh, for the record, I feel the same way about wait staff, and basically anybody who is on the job.
Hey - she’s not only being nice to you, she’s being nice to you working in retail 6 days before Christmas. As long as it’s not something inappropriate [bad or profane], why not? How is it worse than picking someone up in a bar? At least you’re bother sober…
Well, I must admit. Shortly after exiting the store, I jotted down my name and number and wrote that I would be out of town till x-mas. I walked back and handed it to her saying, “I forgot to give this to you” Now I hope she doesn’t throw it away, thinking it was just scrap paper
