What's the most overrated thing, in your opinion?

The SDMB; I like it and all, but it is hardly the repository of greater knowledge as some people portray it.

The generic definition of success. Why should we let other people define how well we’ve done at life? We should decide for ourselves, and what I think of at successful is often defined by others as mediocre.

I stand up for my right to be mediocre! But not too long.

Oh, and Ipods.

Oh, never mind.

Well, hell. My last girlfriend was crazy but that didn’t translate into any kind of sexual skill despite her insanity *and *greater experience. She was actually probably the worst; I feel cheated.

Not even.

You’ll die without food.

On the other hand I’m sure most of us have endured lengthy dry spells which prove conclusively that sex is not like food in that respect.

Metallica

Music. In my youth, I was a constant music consumer, I have hundreds of CDs and cassettes from the late '80s thru late '90s. I haven’t bought more than 5 CDs in the last 12 years, I bet. When I listen to the radio, it’s mostly Howard Stern, with some sports radio and a little music mixed in.

It just doesn’t move me anymore.

Joe

Abnormally high intelligence. Kind of a holy grail for all upbringing paradigms, but without wisdom and empathy it is, if anything, a handicap.

That leads us to the REAL most overrated thing. Radio music. Ie the kind of music that is being played on the big radiostations over and over. The kind of music that is made to sell, not to be good, or because it was what the writer really wanted to do.

With that being said, there IS alot of great music out there (IMO), the problem is just finding it…

Sex, television, the automobile. Oh, decisions, decisions.

I can’t decide.

Think I’ll go with: Automobile

Most things Apple (that is, the company in Cupertino). Not that they’re bad, mind you, because they’re not, but simply that they’re overrated.

Sometimes the sender is sending texts from a place where people frown upon making too much noise such as inside a train, in a library, hospital, etc. Or, on the other side, the person receiving the communication has the phone ringer on mute or vibe mode due to their location so they can’t necessarily answer a phone call, but they can read the message on their screen.

Hollywood.

I don’t think that makes them over rated, it just means you don’t have much use for a GPS. I have a GPS and while it has been extremely useful to me (I do end up in unfamiliar territotry a lot) I don’t think its the best thing in the world.

Things I find overrated?

Family Guy. Its not funny. I’m not even mildly entertained by it, but i’ve met people that think its hilarious. Of course they have the attention span of a gnat, so I guess I can see how they would like it.

Commercial sports. Cheering on your own kids, or someone you know IRL, is fun. But the whole huge stadium, commercial endorsements, sports players as celebrities thing leaves me cold.

Just about all American sitcoms. Almost all of them are based on idiot plots. They’re just really too stupid to live. We need to do some serious weeding out of the gene pool, here.

Radio morning talk shows and their “personalities”. Each of them seems to be trying to be more juvenile than the next. And succeeding. Just play some damn music, will you? Your opinions aren’t worth listening to, and I can read the newspaper for myself!

Most of the TV news. It rarely goes in depth, and I am truly not interested in what the man or woman on the street has to say about most topics. The average man or woman on the street is pretty dumb, IME. Similarly, when I see a TV weather reporter standing out in the downpour/sleet/hail/tornado, I am not impressed by the location. I AM impressed by the stupidity. I feel that the reporter can report even better in a nice, dry, safe location, which has all those nifty doohickeys and special effects.

South Park. Maybe it’s because I got into it too late, but it’s more likely that I just don’t get it. I kept hearing everyone talk about it, but we didn’t get that channel here for years. Oh well, that’s just less TV to watch.

I could go on and on, but mostly I am constantly dumbfounded by what seems to be extremely popular.

Children.

Consumer Choice. Call me a Communist, but I don’t see the point in having such a vast choice in differently-coloured crap. I don’t mind there being a certain amount of choice, between high-end and affordable goods, say; but the illusory individual identities we are expected to piece together from associations sold to us through advertising are grossly wasteful and outright vulgar.

Harley Davidson motorcycles.

What IST said.

Body Size. Since when did your weight become the standard to judging your entire character?
