One of the funny nuances about the Venture Brothers was Dr. Girlfriend’s voice. For those unfamiliar, Dr. Girlfriend was The Monarch’s [badguy] girlfriend for much of the series. She looked female enough, but had this really coarse, deep man voice which freaked me out the first time I heard it. So what’s the deal?
Why did Dr. Girlfriend leave Phantom Limb in the first place, and spend so much time with a jealous insecure bastard like the Monarch? (then again, Phantom Limb seems like quite the pervert himself).
The fate of the Venture Brothers seems rather up in the air.
Rusty’s brother has been relocated to Spider Island. Ally? Nemesis? I’m interested to know!
Mrs. Impossible’s baby?
$6million man and Sasquach…will they finally get married?
You totally should. I did. But, according to Jackson Publick’s Live Journal, it looks really good that there will be a second season. It’s just not official yet.
I went through a brief period of near panic when I suddenly realized that my favorite cartoons, Venture Bros. and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, seemed to have a real problem with women. In ATHF, the only women are scary strippers and hos that Carl drags home, and they are stupid and na-a-a-s-t-y. Dr. Girlfriend has that bizarre voicing choice, there’s that Russian babe with the chastity belt, Mrs. Impossible was a reaaal piece of work, and don’t forget that episode where Dr. Venture macks on stripers in that bar. Ew!
Why was I resonanting most strongly with cartoons that were clearly being made by overgrown boys, wallowing in girls-are-icky, sex-is-ooky pre-adolescence?
But then I thought harder about Dr. Girlfriend, who is basically the only smart, sane character on the show, isn’t she? Sure, she has her issues with the Phantom Limb, and she’s dating a loser, but hey, ladies, haven’t we all been there? And Trianna, seems like a pretty cool chick.
So I decided that the Venture Bros. are cool.
Now, the Aqua Teens, well . . . They remain a guilty pleasure. I try not to like them so much.
Podkayne, don’t worry, the women don’t seem to come off any worse then anyone else on ATHF. I agree about Dr Girlfriend and Trianna. My theory for Dr Girlfriend’s voice: a low, husky voice on a woman is sexy (Jessica Rabbit, etc). Therefore, the lower and huskier the voice, the sexier the cartoon babe. (Jessica Rabbit > The Baroness > Petunia Pig) following this to its logical conclusion, the voice implies Dr Girlfriend is the most alluring animiated woman around.
In the episode with the yard sale, Billy Quizboy the boy genious and his partner were basically henting that she use to be a man. Billy said he heard that DR. Girlfriend had a baboon uterus implanted.
So you like the Venture Brothers too? Hmmm, we both have slackitude in common as well having missed the AusDopeFest. Anyway, just tried to email you but it doesn’t work. My address is good.
I have absolutely no idea where they’ll go from the last show. What’s funny is that at the pilot, I hated the boys but by the end they were part of the reason I watched the show. I can’t wait.
As long as it has Dr. Orpheus. I love the way his theme music pipes up even when he’s saying something as common as “Who wants pizza rolls?”
And I have to say I don’t really care about Dr. Girlfriend’s past. I just know she’s a minx in bed.
The only thing I can think of is that before most shows they’d reference some exciting mission they got back from. Thus the gator and mummy from the pilot, the chupacabra from Dia de los Dangerous, the whole Rocky Horror thing from the finale and so on. Some of those I’d like to see.
IIRC it was “Monkey ovaries”. I also took this to mean that Dr Girlfriend was a post-operative transsexual.
I don’t have cable, so I’ve missed most of the episodes. I try to catch up when visiting friends and relatives with cable.
Re The Monarch
I thought it was because he cared about her. Phantom Limb just seemed to want a trophy wench to increase his status.
Has Brock ever hit on her?
BTW
I thought the boys releasing the Krampus was hillarious. Only months later did I learn that the writers did not invent the Krampus. Men in Krampus outfits still harass women in Germany every Christmas.
There was an episode which dealt with the Monarch’s birthday, and Dr. Girlfriend was planning on giving The Monarch a birthday present ‘in bed’ but the Venture crew crashed the party. In one scene, Brock barges in the Monarch’s bedchambers to find a scantily clad Dr. Girlfriend lying in bed. Can’t remember the exact dialogue, but it was to the effect of Brock kind of just blowing her off, and Dr. Girlfriend saying, “don’t make me beg!”
I don’t know if the Monarch cares about her more than Phantom Limb. Granted he’s less perverted, but my god is he a moody bitch. The episode that comes to mind is when he uses Dr. Girlfriend to seduce Dr. Venture [having one of his henchmen walk in on him masturbating to watching his girlfriend making out with Dr. Venture was PRICELESS! ] and he gets incredibly jealous about the whole thing, even though it was his idea.
The Venture Bros are clones. Think about it.
-In the Xmas episode Hank didn’t know about the Venture tradition of placing baby Jesus into the manger. How could he have not heard of it in 15 some years?
-In the testicle torsion episode Dr. Venture mentions that he should have fixed Dean’s testes in “beta testing.”
There are a few more hints that I’m sure I’m forgetting.
As for Dr. Venture’s “Get their clothes” line after the brothers are killed:
I think there is something special about their clothes. The Monarch commented on how Hank always wears the same outfit. Sure we have seen them in different outfits, but I still think there is something there.
