What's wrong with brainy guys with long hair?

That is a huge turn-off for me, and I associate the phrase “long-haired brainiac” with that stereotype. Although my mental image also includes 1) exclusively black clothing 2)D&D or other gaming obsession 3) a tendency to wear long leather dusters in the mistaken impression that they make you look individualistic or rugged. No. The pale, gaming-and-mountain-dew influenced complection pretty much negates that effect. 4) A penchant for Robert Jordan or similar authors.

None of the above is bad by itself (except for #3. Seriously, dude, invest in a mirror. That coat does you no favors) and my current bf is guilty of #2 and #4, but when all four are there with elmwood’s list, they add up to an… inability or unwillingness to deal with reality that is a bit disturbing in a teenager, and off-putting in an adult.

They also tend to be afraid of women, although, to be fair, if my idea of feminity was shaped by the women in Fantasy novels, I would be too- they can kick ass!

Disclaimer: I only date nerds, geeks, and eggheads. I love them in all flavors- science fiction buffs, engineers, comp sci nuts, SCA knights, etc- except this one. I am attracted to the brains in the preceeding list because they are more aware of the universe around them than the average person, and often more confident and comfortable with themselves (always sexy).

Disclaimer#2: The above post was in no way commenting on Lord Ashtar. You are an intelligent poster, one of the ones that make me glad I’m a Doper. However, if I were doing the online dating thing, and didn’t know you from Adam, the long-hair/braniac combo would make me less likely to approach you initially.

Lord Ashtar, you’re a good-looking guy.

Precisely. When I read the above, the first thing that popped into my mind was this image (safe for work; see the top center) – the pale, either emaciated or obese, ponytailed guy, maybe with a beard, maybe donning a fedora, obsessed with Linux and techno-politics, wearing a black “Got root?” or “There’s no place like 127.0.0.1” t-shirt underneath his duster at a LAN party or con of some sort. The long-hair-in-a-ponytail look is one trademark of a Unix geek, something even people outside of geek circles know; witness Comic Book Guy on the Simpsons.
