Some time ago, I made a mix tape for my girlfriend/ soon-to-be-wife.
I made the mix at a time when things were kind of all up in the air. We were living apart. I was in grad school and she took a dead end job in DC, a 9 hour drive away. We were both desperately trying to find a way to be together and escape our mutually shitty locales.
The second song on the tape was “Summerland” by Everclear.
If your not familiar with the song, it’s essentially about a couple who decide to leave all the bad things behind and start a new life elsewhere. Their new destination is “Summerland”, choosen for the sake of it’s optimistic sounding name.
In it’s own weird little way, the song has become our own little “us against the world” theme song.
This topic came up recently when asked if we were going to have “our song” played at our wedding.
Considering some of the lyrics, it would probably be really inappropriate:
"We could find a town-
be just how we want to be
no one here really cares
about us anyway
we could find a place-
make it what we want it to be
no one really gives a fuck
about us anyway
we could live-
live just like we want to live
no one here really cares
about us anyway
we could be-
everything we want to be
we could get lost in the fall
glimmer sparkle and fade"
Not exactly “Wind Beneath My Wings” material. And that, of course, is a good thing.
Would make for a really interesting “first dance” song, though.
So how about you and yours? What song means something special to you guys?
I Swear, by John Michael Montgomery (we’re big country fans)
I swear,
By the moon and the stars in the sky,
I’ll be there.
I swear,
Like the shadow that’s by your side,
I’ll be there.
For better or worse,
Till death do us part,
I’ll love you with every beat of my heart.
“Sugar” by the Archies. We have very different music tastes, and one night we decided on this song because it was the first song one of us named that we both liked. We didn’t use it as the first song at our wedding, mainly since we needed a slow dance because neither of us has any rhythm. So “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith was our first dance, and the DJ played “Sugar” later in the evening for us.
Sorry, he’s all man…and plus, he has a girly-girl of his own already (that’s what his sig means).
Our song is “Master of Puppets” by Metallica. It was how we met - I was singing the lyrics, he joined in. As racinchikki once said, it contains the “oft-underestimated romantic undertones of old-school Metallica.”
“Said I promised to never fall in love with a stranger,
You’re all I’m thinking of I praise the Lord above,
For sending me your love, I cherish every hug,
(loud)I really love you!”
“All my life, I pray for someone like you,
and I thank God… that I, that I finally found you
All my life I pray for someone like you
I hope that you feel the same way too”
“You’re all that I’ve ever known,
your smile on your face, all I see is a glow,
You turned my life around,
You picked me up when I was down”
A little while after we started dating he said that he had dedicated a song to me, and handed me his CD player and told me to put it on track 11. I was scared at first, thinking “Okay, maybe it’s Green Day’s Good Riddance” and then it started playing, and it definitely wasn’t. So that’s my story.
Y’know, I have Gunslinger on tape singing a couple lines of I Swear (it was part of one of his roles in my finger-puppet trailer trash adaptation of Hamlet)…
Other than that there’s nothing we have any connection to whatsoever. ::shrug:: I’ll have Metallica played at our wedding, though, just on principle.
I gotta add to my first post by sharing this bit of irony.
foxboy is out of town this weekend, and this thread made me think about him. I went into my room, turned the radio on and switched to a local college station, and a few seconds later “our song” came on.
