It’s almost time to make up your mind for election day. No, not the candidate. It’s the network to watch or perhaps you’ll follow online.
After watching elections on CBS for two decades, I may switch to MSNBC. Not that I dislike CBS (it’s fun to listen to the Ratherisms), it’s just that the local newsbreaks are virtually worthless and this year I want to focus on the BIG RACE. So of all the cable news networks, I prefer MSNBC for the Hardball gang. I just can’t bring myself to follow online, but perhaps many will.
I will probably split my time between Peter Jennings and Comedy Central. I love the whole filling in the states thing and the excitement of election today. My quasi state of DC will likely be the first colored in for Kerry, so I wont have that excitement of wondering how my ballot affected the race in my home state, but it remains worth watching for as long as I can stay up.
I suspect I’ll be watching one of the local channels (it happens to be a Fox affiliate, but they’ll likely be doing their own coverage), along with sfgate.com, the SDMB, and #sd. That way, I should be able to keep on top of not only the prez, but state and civic elections as well. That’s pretty much what I was doing for the 2000 election.
Boblibdem, I wandered into IMHO just now to ask a very similar question. Instead of opening a new thread, I hope you don’t mind an extra question?
What online site does everyone follow? In 2000 I was stuck at work, but in '96 & '98 I was at a site that gave updated (every 5 mins or so) of ALL voting by state. It’s been so long, though, that I can’t remember which one it was. Any ideas on where to look this year?
Darn good question. I may indeed duck on the computer at the commercial breaks. I hope someone has some good info. My inclination is that any official state site is going to wait for final results. msnbc.com and cnn.com will have no more than their respective networks. So where are the sites to visit?
I’ll be right here. The Dope gets the news from all outlets, and Dopers will be in here screaming or cursing or celebrating, depending on the race. I’ll be able to follow every race from right at my keyboard. Otherwise…I’m gonna watch a movie!
I don’t have a TV, so I expect I’ll have the radio tuned to NPR and I’ll be browsing around the internet - here, the NY Times, the SF Chronicle, and the BBC are my favorite sources of news. I’ll probably be keeping track of how badly Obama’s gonna kick Keyes’ ass with the Chicago Tribune.
Are you cracked? This election will have it all! Suspense! Intrigue! Drama! And in the end it’s guarateed to either be the “Feel good event of the Year!” or “So shocking you’ll have to see it to believe it!” (Depending on your political slant)
Actually, in 2000 I watched Comedy Central, so when they said that Florida went to Gore by mistake, I thought it was a joke. This time, I odn’t get Comedy Central, so I will probably watch it on MSNBC or CNN.
Unfortunately, both leading men suck, the supporting actors are all wooden, the plot…don’t get me started on the plot! The Special Effects are lousy and it promises to be the longest movie in history, what with the promised legal challenges to every hiccup.
I’ll be flipping and surfing like crazy. CNN, Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, straightdope, race2004.net, electionprojection.com, electoral-vote.com, et al. I got a  from my bf when I told him that I’m taking off the Wednesday after the election. Who could work/sleep when there are gonna be so many updates going on?
I will probably go out to dinner and then a late movie as a means of isolating myself and making it impossible to turn on the TV or look at the 'net, “just to check.” If I do, I’ll get sucked in, and spend hours chewing my fingernails down to the elbow.
So instead, I will enjoy a nice, leisurely meal, get lost in a film, and then look for a fast, get-it-over-with, more-or-less-done-deal update when I come home late. And if at that point it isn’t a done deal, if it looks like the lawyers are smelling blood in the electoral waters, I will go into the basement, brick up the entrance, and cry myself into a coma.
Well, I’m off work that night but I may not be able to find anyone to hang out with. MSNBC is my cable choice (I’ll be checking the local stations also for races & ballot issues)- I like Chris Matthew & Joe Scarborough, guests Pat Buchanan & Peggy Noonan. Chris Jansing is mega-cute, and I’m even finding Ron Reagan tolerable when offset by Joe or Pat. I’ll also probably float by Comedy Central on occasion.
If I have church friends over, probably also order pizza. If not, still have pizza but also beer.
