Whoosh.
Technical glitches getting the scum boards set up are slowing things down, but if I can get them fixed quickly (ie get Idle to fix them for me) I should be able to get the startup thread going sometime on Monday.
Watch this thread for details.
Woo hoo!
Oh…right. Yes, of course.
NAF, thanks! I really missed playing Mafia. Idle Thoughts will have fun, voting off a new username of mine this time.
I ADORE Mafia in real life, and have seen it being played here, too. How does one get involved? I don’t want to miss out.
Subscribe to this thread. I will post here when the game thread is up. I am hoping monday, but I am having trouble getting my co-mod (Mtgman) onto the project planning/scum board. So that might delay things until Tuesday.
This is going to be a smaller game then we have had in the recent past. It will only have 19 players, so keep your eyes open if you want a slot.
How does playing work in real life? I’d imagine it would have to be a bit simpler than, say, the least one where there were four different sides. I know that in the very simple games, mafia/werewolves talk while the town covers their ears, sometimes…is that how you did it?
When I played in IRL (and we used to play it a lot when I was doing high school theatre) town closed their eyes and mafia had to communicate with hand signals.
Everyone sat in a circle next to each other, so you had to be careful not to make extra noise. It was a good game to work on acting chops with. Because it required both muscle control and a cultivation of the ability to lie convincingly.
Also, this game is going to be a throwback of sorts to those simpler IRL mafia games. There will be ALMOST no power roles. Exact details of how things will work in the opening post of the game thread. But the game it will be semi open in it set up, AND you get to write your own death scenes.
Anybody want to explain to me what this is about?
It’s a game, and it’s fun.
You should totally play. We need new blood. And it isn’t like the game is addicting in any way shape or form. No siree.
Getting killed in the offboard game lit something of a fire under my ass to get the new game running. Must have the game!
Ooh, that sounds fun as well as very challenging. My last game (on this board) was a way more complicated one. It was also my first one so it was a bit hard. It’ll be nice to see how a more basic game plays out. (Keeping track of all four factions and individual people does make one’s brain hurt a bit.)
I made my brain hurt too, and I was just watching it.
IRL mafia rules BTW. I have been working on making it a party game (like the murder mystery games) where people don’t have to sit in a circle but instead jsut walk around and interact. The scum have to go off covertly and meet in corners to plan kills etc. I just cant figure out how they submit who gets killed without everyone figuring out it was them.
The way I’ve done it is everyone gets a pad of paper and everyone is required to write SOMETHING every Day(if there’s a cop) and every Night. It’s harder to tell who is writing a player’s name and who is writing nonsense. Post it notes work great because you can write on the back and have a self-sealing envelope to pass to the mod. Make a fish bowl, or something, be the repository and everyone wanders by at various points after talking/mixing for a bit and drops their note in. They need to put their name and their vote/action on the note.
Enjoy,
Steven
I’ve gotten my extended family addicted to Mafia. The kids just love it. The only problem I have is balancing the game – the first time we played it, the Mafia won every round, and the second time, the Town won every time. I couldn’t just adjust the Town/Mafia ratio because it was small groups both times. I suppose that the answer is to adjust the power roles somehow? Anybody have any ideas?
The IRL games I play is always 1 scum per 3 town, up to 10 players. (More then 10 players is almost too big because the games take so long.)
We didn’t really have power roles. We did have a role we call the snitch that got to see the identity of a single person before the game started. If the game had more then 7 people we would add in that character. The game gets harder the better you know the people you are playing with.
I was thinking the same thing. Alternatively, you (as moderator) could carry around a little notebook and wander around talking to people. Every time you talk to someone, write something in the book. Some notes will be garbage, some notes will be actual data, so no one can make guesses off of when you write.
Ohhhh, how I miss Mafia. I need to play again!
Soon, I hope. Don’t think I have the time I need to put in to this game.
I played my first RL game of Mafia when I was probably six. In the kid’s church room while my parents were in the main service. We called it “fruit basket surprise” and we all sat in a circle and had to figure out who the fruit with the worm was. The worm could make one of us spoil each “night”(we wouldn’t change sides, we’d just be “thrown out”).
Enjoy,
Steven
Along those lines, I remember something called “Murder in the Dark.” You drew slips of paper, and you were either a potential victim, a detective of the murderer. The lights went off and when the murderer touched someone, they were dead, the victim screamed and the detective had to ask questions to figure out who was the killer. Ah, the Pre-Internet days.
I was in the first two Mafia games here, but they burned me out. Especially the second one. Man, that was epic. It went to what, 80 pages? I may play again later, but not now.
