Where is the cold and snow I was promised?

Hah! I am, indeed, working from home. I have a great view of our cul-de-sac from my home office window. Sidewalks and driveways are covered already; we’ll see how long before the grass is covered.

A kid in the neighborhood just bit the dust riding his scooter down the street. All is well.

I work from home every day.

My windows face the street; we’re near the top of a winding hill and I’m a little surprised that buses are still running the hill.

Hmmm. First experience with shoveling snow. Excitement factor reduced from 10 to 8. :dubious:

On the other hand, having my wife hit me with a snow ball for the first time makes up for a lot of that. We’re back up to a 9 out of 10.

The Weather Channel says blizzard conditions start in about an hour. There is yet more novelty in this for me. Onward!

Blizzard conditions are coming and you’re bothering with shoveling now? Come on, rookie!

I said the same thing!!! But my wife said it wouldn’t be a bad idea during the lull, and we weren’t the only people in the neighborhood shoveling. So someone thinks it was a reasonable thing to do!

And she told you this right before she hit you with the snowball…

Unpleasantly Large Mid-Atlantic Snow Event Coming

Where is the cold and snow I was promised?

“I survived the pummeling my fellow mid-Atlantic Dopers gave me for starting this horseshit thread about cold & snow which begat the Blizzard of 2016 (Pt I)” :o

You seem bitter.

Actually it is a really good idea. Better to keep up with it while it is still light than to try to lift the entire amount at once.

But you do know you will need to do it again somewhere between every 2 hours to 15 minutes depending on the snowfall for the duration (sounds like sometime Sunday). If you can keep this up you will have a neatly shoveled drive… that ends in a street covered in two feet of snow.

Added bonus… once your neatly shoveled drive is finished the plows will come thorough and push a three foot wall of ice and snow onto the end and block you from getting to that newly plowed street.

Welcome to the great white north. Just wait until you learn about drifts… your two feet can magically turn into 4 to 5 feet in places.

Yup. Two inches on the ground, two more inches coming? Makes perfect sense to shovel now and keep up. Two inches now and two more feet on the way? It ain’t gonna make a difference, you’re screwed.

Seriously, good luck to the east coasters. I hope you all make it through safely.

I’m hoping all of you stay warm, safe and cozy for the next couple of days as mother nature goes nuts on you.

It’s freezing here too. it’s all the way down to the mid/high 60s.

Are you happy now?

I didn’t realize my simple wish would end up destroying the entire mid-Atlantic. My bad.

You’ll learn to use your powers more wisely next time.

Bitter?
I just went three miles, on snoeshoes, in the middle of a freakin’ BLIZZARD to bring you this status update…the two closest bars to my house are CLOSED!!! Why on Earth should I be bitter?

I mean I’m within sight of my 11,500+ step count for the day.
I’m not bitter, not at all.

No updates on your current attitude regarding cold and snow?

  1. Cold is still a beautiful thing. I was just outside (meekly) shoveling while wearing shorts.

  2. Snow falling from the sky is still a beautiful thing. Peaceful, lovely, quiet…

  3. Snow on the ground can go fuck itself.

Seriously, though. I hurt my back shoveling on Sunday and wasn’t able to clear the driveway. Couldn’t even make an effort yesterday. And overnight, our street apparently finally got plowed, but my wife and I can’t make enough headway right now to even clear one car-width to the street. I’m about to see if there’s anyone I can hire to help get us out. It’s pretty frustrating. We really need to do a real shopping trip today, and I have to get into my office tomorrow. Can’t afford another day of no progress.

So I think it’s safe to say I’m no fan of blizzards at this point.

Snow on the trees is also very pretty, until it starts dropping down on you in big, wet clumps.

It took me five tries on Sunday and Monday to dig my car out–there’s just no place to put the shoveled snow.

Sorry that you hurt your back, but I hope you can’t go anywhere again (as long as you are safe). I’m stuck taking two vacation days 'cause the government is closed.

Glad you are changing your mind about cold and snow though!
