Happy Monday y’all!
We gotta go to a meeting tonight and be all dramatic.
See, they’re in the process of turning the old Newberg Central School building into a, or I should say, ‘the’, Cultural Center.
It’s in the next block from our house. We can see the front door from our porch.
Naturally we have an interest in what they are doing over there and have been involved in it’s developement somewhat. (understatement).
Well, we were surprised a few months ago to be invited to a ‘visioning’ event at the library one evening to ‘brainstorm’ about the final form for the surrounding area.
I say we were surprised because we already had a plan for the surrounding area, all signed off on by the city, et. al., or so we thought.
Major bone of contention: That plan included parking for, IIRC, 95 vehicles. Not enough, really, considering that the new Cultural Center will contain a 200+ seat theater plus a ballroom/event space large enough for 300+ people, (the old gym). But we thought we could work with that.
The new ‘vision’ that they (a consulting firm from New York) came up with only had 55 parking spaces at the venue, and involved redesigning the surrounding streets for ‘on street parking’. Much of it back-in angled parking. Never mind the fact that I’ve seen the people of my little town try to park, and it ain’t pretty. The major problem with moving the parking into the surrounding neighborhood is, that the surrounding neighborhood is occupied by, well, neighbors. This is an old, (emphasis on ‘old’), established neighborhood, with small, or sometimes no, driveways. On any given evening our street, and all the other streets around here, is already pretty much filled with cars that belong to, guess who? The neighbors.
Several people have tried to say “wait a minute!”, but they just say, “oh, we’re just ‘visioning’ here. When we’re all done ‘visioning’ you’re gonna just LOVE it!”
Tonight is supposed to be the final meeting, and they haven’t shone any signs of listening to anybody except their consultants about anything.
We shall have to rise up in revolt, I fear.
Additional background: I only explained the parking problem, there are a number of other bones of contention* in their ‘vision’, but the parking is the one that most everybody agrees on. We all hate it.
*For instance; they want to tear down the Library annex (ugly old building) and put up a ‘stage’ I guess you’d call it, for outdoor plays and things, thereby reducing the value of that plot of land by at least $100,000.00. I’m agin it, but others don’t care about that.
What happened to our other parking spaces from the original plan, you ask? Damned if I know. They seem to have become sculptures and stuff. I Dunno.
This is not good for my blood pressure.
