My Mom is, but then, she works at a medical facility. At least she is no longer in a job that requires every other weekend. (Bonus: no one wants to be in the hospital or have stuff done during the Holiday season. Bad Part: means the ‘powers that be’ are going to be desperate to fill beds, so they’ll get patients that shouldn’t be there.)
I’m at work, because the mean old woman I work for insists on it. We have no reason to be here, really. None of our clients are open. Nobody is looking for work on Black Friday. But I had to be here because the owners want their draw checks made out today (could’ve been done Wednesday, really) and deposited in their accounts today (yes, they send me to do it). And one other person (who is acting as receptionist today) is here, but it’s not like there’s any reason she should be either. Bah, humbug.
Restaurant manager here, so of course we are open today. Not only that but I got to come in early and put up all the Christmas decorations. At least we were closed for lunch today. And the owner gave me a really nice bottle of champane to show his appreciation. So it really isn’t all that bad.
Working. Salaried. Only here to cover because my boss, his boss, and the CEO are all out, and SOMEONE in the IT department has to be on-site in case one of the four guys who are working breaks something.
I was. 6a - 2:30p, and it was pretty much a normal day. Slightly slower than a usual Friday, but not enough that we could cut the schedule at all. I’m just glad I’m not in the mall today.
I was at work, apparently due to some Federal regulation that banks can’t be closed 4 days in a row. It was D-E-D DEAD and I got a ton of stuff done, and they let us go home at 3:30. I was the only person on my team in the office today, and the phone only rang twice all day. It was probably as productive as 3 normal days - no interruptions.
My husband is working today. But he got the day before Thanksgiving off, so I think that was his tradeoff.
I’m a housewife, with no children, so my “job” is pretty easy. I cleaned up the mess from all the cooking I did the night before Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving morning, then ran some errands.
But I don’t think it counts, because I enjoy this “work” too damn much.
I was at work earlier. I am a public defender, and as of January 1, 2005, we are required by Georgia law to see everyone who is arrested within 72 hours of arrest. Not business hours, 72 hours. So we take turns working holidays. I traded Christmas for Thanksgiving. I saw 20 inmates today. It would have been 30, but 10 of them made bond within the 72 hours. Woohoo!
I work in healthcare, graveyard shift, so I was there last night into this morning, and will return in about an hour for another all nighter. I get paid WELL for it, so it’s OK with me. I can’t remember the last time I had a holiday off, but I don’t have kids or any family here, so I just as soon work and give other people the day off.
I’m in publishing too, so I was at the office plugging away. I got my interviews and most of my stories done on Wednesday, so we’re in good shape to go to press on Tues. night. I had approx. 5 e-mails today, while on a normal Friday I get about 50-75. Today I finished the calendar of events and made a dent in editing other features because it was so quiet. The office manager and I were the only ones there most of the day, but that’s par for the course.
Besides writing and editing, I also answer phones and take ads. I took one classified and one home service ad, and answered probably three other information calls.
Yep, it was slow, but I got a lot done.
I work every day, part time, even on holidays, with no extra holiday pay. If I could afford to go anywhere on a day off, I might object, but as it is, I go with it. Money is money.
