Me (as long as we don’t count secondhand smoke… bleah!!!).
Mom smoked cigarettes. Dad smoked cigars / pipes. Both revolted me from a very early age.
The surprising thing was that of 4 kids, only 1 ever smoked cigarettes, and he was able to quit as an adult. I believe the 2 other brothers probably experimented (with tobacco and/or wacky tobacky).
Have never smoked anything. My mother still smokes but sparingly and usually “in hiding”. She did smoke around me all the time when I was younger and when I was about 3 years old I remember actually liking the smell of cigarette smoke. To be honest, though, I was a weirdo reading books about drugs in the school library when I was in the 3rd grade, so I had the idea that “drugs are bad!” ingrained in my brain for a long time.
I’ve smoked exactly 3, but I was trying to get laid so I don’t think it really counts. Plus I was in a bar (before the smoking ban) so the damage was pretty much already done.
I smoked a cigar once too! I ended up throwing up and being quite ill.
I have never smoked one of my own, or inhaled at all, but I used to have to light them for a sister of mine all the time. One summer when I lived with her, I was her personal maid/assistant, and one of the things I had to do, was light her ciggarettes, and then hand them to her. So I suppose I don’t really count.
Smoking is one of the few bad habits I have never had.
Never smoked any kind of cigarette. My mom smoked when I was growing up and I didn’t really find it gross or anything, but I was never tempted to try it myself. and the people I hung around with weren’t smokers.
No, really. I’ve never smoked but in my last year of high school when I had to take either music or drama, I took drama and near the end some other guy and I did a scene in which a cigarette had to be smoked, and at the time we thought we were being really subversive by using a real one on stage given that you weren’t allowed to smoke in any school building.
I “fake smoked” by drawing the smoke into my mouth and blowing it out again, but it really looked stupid and everyone could tell I wasn’t really smoking.
But honestly, how the hell do smokers do it? I accidentally inhaled part of one drag during rehearsal and instantly started choking, eyes watering, the whole deal. I can’t imagine doing that on purpose, all the time, and how anyone could get over the choking.
And when we actually had to present the scene, I started talking while there was still smoke in my mouth and it came out my nose! Frak, that sucked too!
The only other times I ever tried smoking cigarettes was at some party where we were all drinking underage. I took a drag off my buddy’s cigarette, or tried to. (choking, watering eyes etc.) as above.
chiming in. Never smoked a cigarette EVER, and never will (same goes for cigars and pipes). I won’t even be FRIENDS with someone who smokes. If you smoke, you’re an idiot in my eyes, end of story. Neither of my parents smoked, and when I was 5 years old I got my grandmother to stop by saying that I would no longer spend ANY time with her or at her house as long as she was still smoking.
I can also count on one hand the number of times I’ve smoked weed - once with a joint, once with a pipe, twice with a bong…and each time I was so disgusted that it overshadowed any possible benefits that the drug could have.
I am allergic to tobacco. I am told that I turn green when I sit in the smoking section of a restaurant. I have never felt the slightest inclination to try it.
I am disappointed that this thread didn’t ask for the age of the posters. I am curious if the “smoking is disgusting and will kill you” from an early age made the difference. I would think you would find less that have never tried it over 40.
