Who is WSHBaker?

I am a new member of SDMB and I recently posted the following message under General Questions:

"For years now, I have been hearing something about how humminbirds migrate that is either true, or the biggest urban legend going. Just yesterday I heard it again in a restaurant and decided to call on all the brains in SD for help.

Is it true that hummingbirds migrate south by catching rides on the backs of Canada Geese and other large birds? I remember reading this a few years ago in a newspaper, in which they explained that scientists had finally explained how such small birds could migrate all the way south. The article said it was a sort of symbiotic relationship. The humminbirds ate fleas and othet parasites off the geese (sounds yucky, but most airline food is not much better, you have to admit) and the hummingbirds get a free flight (no inflight movies, though).

The first time I heard this it sounded like bullshit, but I keep hearing it from all inds of sources. Does anyone have any info?

Have terrorist humminbirds ever hijacked a Canada goose?

Can hummingbirds who do this often accumulate frequent flyer points?

Do they have to reserve a goose in advance?

Moi needs answers!"

Believe it or not, I just got an email from someone named WSHBaker saying:

"Realize you are newcomer to SDMB.

Let me suggest your Question(s) be limited in number, leaving out all the BS!

Leave off the smart alec styled questions as well as “Moi needs answers!.” It
comes off as sophmoric.

A simple “Thanks” will suffice.
Every knows you are seeking answers by reading your or anyonr post in GQ or GD."

First of all, is WSHBaker a moderator or someone else who works for SD?

Also, you will note that in my thread about hummingbirds hitching rides on other birds, one person sent a pic of hummingbirds humping in the air and claimed that they were hitching a ride, and then another sent a joke about “bird porn”.

Everywhere I look, people have postings filled with funny comments. There is no end to the fun banter and joking that goes on in postings. May I ask why I am the one who is called to order for making “smart alec” remarks? Do other people get these emails from the Master of Discipline?

I did a search for posts by said poster and was told it was an invalid username. You can do it too by clicking on Search, Advanced, Search by username.

Your post seems just fine to me. Usually if someone has helpful advice for a newbie it is done gently, and in the thread. Probably just someone jerking your chain.

Well, the mods for GQ are xash, Rico, DrMatrix, and samclem. I didn’t find any posters named WSHBaker having posted anything here, so it’s probably just a case of Junior Modding.

Regarding the content of the comment, eh. There have been people who started more threads in their first few weeks. At least you seem to be asking different questions, and only one got locked that I could see. Ease up on them hammers a bit and you should be fine.

Oh, and “It comes off as sophmoric” would be an example of Gauders’ Law, which states that in any post made to chide somebody else’s post (particularly if you’re correcting spelling), you will make a spelling error. Thus, irony is part of our lives.

P.S. If a moderator has any official comments to make to you said moderator will identify as such.

My guess? A random busybody.

There’s nothing wrong with your post and nobody called anything like WSHBaker is in a position of authority on this board.

Ignore it. It’s just some random asshole. I have no idea why someone would want to anonymously harass you by email. If they wanted to complain about your question, they should have done so in the thread itself.

It also demonstrates that anyone who bothers to correct you off the board with commentary as trivial as the email posted in the OP is a giant fucking douchebag and is safely ignored. Don’t sweat it.

That would be Gaudere’s Law.

Is this a whoosh, or just more of that burning irony?

Moi think it’s a “junior mod” overstepping the mark.

Could you post a link to your hummingbird thread?

You could try looking at “email this poster” from each respondent’s profile, and seeing if any of the email addresses therein is recognisable.

FWIW the SDMB search engine does not recognise the username.

We do have a poster named Baker, but he’s not a gigantic douchbag moron, so I’m guessing he’s not the one who sent you that email. Besides, the email listed in his member profile is totally different.

You could always respond to the email you got and ask for an explanation.

It’s his sled!

First of all, friends, thanks for reassuring me about this WSHBaker. I thought he was some official of the board and I was frankly wondering why he was being so severe about my harmless little posting.

But now I have a newbie question, and a fresh concern. This message came in from WSHBaker at my regular email. How come this guy (or gal) had my actual home email address? Can any member see my actual email address that contains my real name? Sorry if this is a really naive question, but there is a lot about this site and its workings that I do not yet understand. My real name is not Valteron, as you have probably surmised. So how does this work?

I agree that WSHBaker (whoever that is) came across like a major douchebag in that email.

However, the end of your OP was, in a word, terrible. There’s simply no excuse for that sort of thing. Please take a moment to savor the deep and burning shame which should have permeated your soul by now, provided you have even a scrap of basic human decency.

(Oh, and welcome to the SDMB. :D)

Your email address is visible if you want it to be. For example, if you click my username and then “Send Email to Priceguy”, you’ll see my email address (and using the same method I can see yours). Click User CP in the top menu to hide your email address.

If you go to the “User CP” menu at the top of the page, you can find the option to hide your e-mail address under the “Edit Options” sub-menu on the left. There’s a bit of text that reads: “You can allow other members to send you email messages.” Un-check the box that follows this.

The email address you registered is visible to all. You can hide it through your user CP if you want to.

Is there a prize for winning a triplepost?

At the moment, yes. You can turn off or change your email via the “User CP” address at the top of the page.

:dubious: To be honest, Baker was the first person I thought of when I read the OP. Perhaps not “a gigantic douchbag moron”, but definitely a rather unnecessarily abrasive participant from time to time.
