Aw, zette honey, even if I had really been mad (which of course I wasn’t), I can’t stay mad at YOU.
Salt potatoes sound great (my kitchen motto is: “There’s nothing that can go wrong in the kitchen that you can’t fix with MORE BUTTER”)… Here in Texas the most famous state-fair food is the fabled corny dog (invented here), along with more common items such as turkey legs and funnel cakes. My boss is from Minnesota, where the fair is known for “fried cheese rinds,” which apparently resemble deep-fried sections of bicycle tire. Better them than me, I say.
[sub]Um, zette, “she” didn’t get the joke, but that’s okay.[/sub]
zette You are SOOOOOOO wonderful! When I was in New York over the summer, I picked up the Bar-B-Que Sauce, the Speidie Sauce and a few other upstate delicacies (Buffalo was too far to drive to for true “Beef on Weck”), but I completely forgot the salt potatoes. Hinterwadels (sp?) was the local major producer, but any brand name should be good. Even a phone number would be a great connection.
Salt potatoes are great when hot, but also good the next morning cold, straight out of the refrigerator (see, you don’t burn the roof of your mouth that way). Salt potatoes go great with a neighborhood barbeque, but you just can beat a July clambake with salt potatoes!
Speaking of great foods, there is a Chevron gas station in Santee, SC (Smith’s Chevron, with the Chevron logo, right on the label) that bottles its own peach, scuppernong and muscadine cider. (Brought back half a dozen of each, and wished I had more room in the car!) I’m ordering a case, so I’ll get a couple extra bottles to send to you.
(Thank you tatertot for starting this thread! I really missed salt potatoes. All my neighbors thought I was weird, but now I can prove to them the existance of one of summer’s best foods! Bwhahahahahaha!)
screech,
I knew you were female, but my “s” key was broken when I wrote that last post. It’s better now, thanks
If you’re interested now or in the future in getting just a bottle of sauce or a bag of taters sent to you, let me know. I’ll hook you up
Funny, I have a friend who moved to NC, and when she comes home to visit she ends up loading up the car with stuff for her southern transplant friends. One of the bigger requests is salt potatoes, then spiedie sauce, Grandma Browns baked beans, and Pinch spice.
I think you can make your own salt potatoes, buy the way. Does your local store sell little potatoes? I don’t think the potatoes are a particular variety, really. Just small. Try boiling some in a very, very fine salt solution (I think the ratio is about 1lb fine salt to 5 lbs taters) and see if it tastes the same.
Just wanted to let everyone know that I won’t be mailing the candy til tomorrow. TinyTot has a nasty cold and I don’t want to take him out. I’ll do it tomorrow, for sure.
Aw, give TinyTot a hug for me!
I’d do it myself, but I just got over a cold myself and don’t need to be sick with all the end of year work that I have to finish by…
Aw heck.

I’m staying home tomorrow.
Thanks.
Hope the little one feels better.
Hey, so far as Twisty’s new Christmas present, my vote is we send him a care package from right here in the South (U.S.)–maybe some canned possum, some MoonPies, GooGoo Clusters, good barbeque sauce…
Yippee! Everybody is in luck - they didn’t have any 3 packs, but never fear - they were selling 4 packs for the price of 3. Hoo Ahh! I love a good bargain.
Ohh goody. I wasn’t aware that I was receiving a calendar after all… yipee! My grandma will be tickled pink. Thanks again tater and Mysterious Benefactor!
