So, an evangelical president walks into a cleaners with a suit and pants and says, “I need this cleaned-there’s a stain on the trousers.”
The cleaner, being hard of hearing, says, “Come again?”
The evangelical president says, “Nah. Just mayonnaise.”
I’m here all week-be sure to try the waitresses and tip some cows.
I agree except for the tarred and feathered part. “Making an example” out of him will just confirm the beliefs that his flock will no doubt hold that he was the problem - a bad apple amongst the bunch - and not their entire system. My wish is for Haggard to get pushed aside by the media and the religious right itself be taken to task.
That, of course, will not happen. That’s why I used the word ‘wish’.
Hey guys, you’re judging the guy and you aren’t supposed to do that. He has accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and when he repents, as he will, he’ll be accepted into heaven.
Which is another reason I’m glad I won’t be there.
You’ve got it backwards, if we had common sense, sex wouldn’t be the big issue that so many people make it out to be, and the fact that someone was gay, straight, bi, or what have you, would be treated like we treat handedness.
Maybe you’re right, but being accepting of homosexuality doesn’t mean that we throw out marriage vows and all conventions of decency. It also doesn’t mean that sex can’t be inappropriate or plain out stupid. If you’re willing to bet your whole life on a single sexual encounter, then you have a serious problem (IMHO). Maybe the system is fucked up, but that doesn’t absolve one from showing self-restraint.
But if we accepted homosexuality, then perhaps he wouldn’t have felt compelled to marry a woman, father kids, and the whole bit. He would have said, “I’m gay, and shacked up with that nice Jewish boy down the street.”
Exactly. This is why they should be forced to repress their left-handedness and required to learn to be right handed without regard for any mental or emotional distress this might cause for them. In fact, organizations should be established to reeducate them concerning how wrong left-handedness is and possibly even therapy to help them overcome the urge to act on it.
Don’t laugh - 80 years ago, left handers were forced to try to write right handed. My father was. I’m half-left handed, so I’m semi-sinister I suppose.
The Nuns at Our Lady of Perpetual Guilt tried to cure my left handed brother of his evil ways when he was a lad. He is only 47 and his hand writing is fershit.
My original comment was more in general than in regards to just Haggard. I admit I don’t have the biggest libido out there, but I simply don’t get how people are willing to take such big risks for sex. If it’s not the closeted-gays like Haggard having trists with male prostitutes, it’s horny heterosexual middle-managers having sex with their 19-year-old receptionists. Or high school teachers seducing their students on the internet. Or US presidents getting oral sex from their interns. It’s like there’s Viagra in our water supply or something.
I’m not saying our attitude towards homosexuality doesn’t lead to situations like Haggard’s, but there are lots of straight guys who are caught in similar acts. What’s their excuse?
Did someone already mention Andrew Sullivan’s take on this? (That lad writes real good.)
He posts a snippet from the guy’s (presumably) last surmon:
“Heavenly Father give us grace and mercy, help us this next week and a half as we go into national elections and Lord we pray for our country. Father we pray lies would be exposed and deception exposed. Father we pray that wisdom would come upon our electorate …”
He (Sullivan) also asks, when and why did he ‘decide’ to become gay?
My father was beaten by nuns for using his left hand, and that was roughly 50 years ago, so it was even later than that in some places. He’s fairly ambidextrous, though, so I’m somewhere between a half and a quarter.
Right. I’m quite sure my wife is left-handed. Everything she was taught to do she does right handed. What she just does, such as handling a shovel, she does left handed.
monstro -it’s never made any sense to me either., but I think it must be because…they can? I think a lot of public figures start to believe their own publicity and feel that they are entitled to X or Y.
Either that or they aren’t as smart as they appear to be…
Yay on Hovink–I remember when they announced they were building that “park”. Too bad it’s for taxes and not because he is flat out wrong (but we don’t imprison people for just being wrong, do we…too bad sometimes.)
