I donno. While I would agree that many Trump voters are racist idiots, I think many where just the “I can’t vote for a Democrat, NEVER!”. And they didn’t know that Trump would destroy the country, which he is hard at work at (not that he has the first clue what he is doing)

I think that they would rather see America be an authoritarian regime under a white man, than a democracy under a black woman. It is no accident that Trump came to power after Obama, Trumpism is a reaction to a black president.

Nope. You can’t have a democracy when half your citizens are overtly hostile to it. Also, huge elements of the federal government have been dismantled. It’s clear that the US is the challenge of the 21st century. Vibrant societies do not elect insane gameshow hosts to be president and the idea that this country is going to snap out of it is nonsense.

I do not think there is any mystery to this. It’s money. The majority do not line the politicians’ pockets. A very few rich people do.
And the very rich control most media and messaging so it has gotten all too easy for them to manipulate the populace. Which is exactly what we see happening today.
Actually, my position is more nuanced than that, but is frequently represented as you state here on the SDMB, that hot-bed of political rest.
I’m not as cynical as you, but I’m very much in agreement with your reason for cynicism. Trump took advantage of some glaring flaws in our system, and I’m not sure how easily it will be to fix them. The country has gotten along well enough for centuries because nobody tried to exploit those things before, as it take a pretty depraved person to do so, and someone that unhinged seemed unlikely to be elected. And then Trump.
Trump being gone doesn’t fix those holes. And if he’s gone, and things go back to normal (which seems like the best case scenario), someone just as depraved as Trump but much more competent may come along later, after people are assured that everything is okay, and really cause a disaster. Not just for the country, but the world.
I don’t feel that destroying America is the only answer, but I get why you feel that way.

It helps that I lived in Russia after the Soviet collapse and also saw the rise of Putin. It is playing out very similarly. The primary difference is Putin’s base was offended by the pulling down of Lenin statues and with MAGA it’s Robert E. Lee.

The chances of this actually occurring are, IMO, low as the low-life, racist, pro-ignorance, pro-might is right, cat is now out of the bag and I don’t really know how possible it will be to put it back in.
That population is now out there and visible, and available to be appealed to by the next authoritarian. Will a democratic government have the energy and resources to successfully combat that (including the equivalent of de-Nazification) and govern effectively at the same time?
