Geezzzzzzz !!!
If you really were the alleged attention whore, you would’ve said, in a faux Southern accent…
“GAWD as mah witness! I will never change mah sig AGAIN!”
So I’ve had connection problems for a week. I just got back on and ran the obligatory vanity search (or attention whore search, if you will).
I’d just like to thank everybody for starting a thread in my honor.
Now I’ll go back and read it. I hope everyone was nice to me.
What?
CuriousCanuck, I think the problem isn’t that people necessarily disagree with your opinion, it’s that your opinion didn’t need to be stated. You don’t like Esprix’s sig. Sure, whatever. You’ve got a right to your opinion, everything’s subjective. Yay for you and your opinion. It’s still pretty dickish to say something about it to the guy’s face, and that’s what people are reacting to here.
It’s like this: say you know a guy socially. You aren’t close at all, he’s more of a friend of a friend with whom you’ve never really had much one-on-one interaction. And then one day, out of the blue, you walk up to him and say, “Steve, you’ve got a really stupid haircut.” Maybe he does. Maybe everyone is sitting around thinking, “Damn, what’s up with Steve’s hair?” But no one says anything, because making a personal comment like that to someone you don’t know very well is quite rude. And if you did it where Steve’s friend over heard, they’d probably say something to you about it, because you’re attacking their friend for no good reason. In fact, to most observers, it would look like you’re just an asshole looking for an excuse to start shit with Steve, and if it hadn’t been the hair, it’d have been his shoes.
It has nothing to do with any sort of board “clique,” however. People have started similar Pit threads about incidental aspects of less popular member’s posting styles, and the reaction is usually more or less the same. Even raisinbread, who as far as I know has never made a single useful contribution to the boards, had defenders when someone pitted him for always posting in purple. Not nearly as many, but there were still a lot of people standing up for the principle that you don’t attack people for doing theings that aren’t hurting anybody.
There’s also the element of being the giant-killer. Maybe you didn’t intend this, but you’re giving off a serious “Look at me! I’m pitting Esprix!” vibe. You keep mentioning Esprix’s popularity as the reason for the uniformly negative reaction you’re getting here, which strikes me as disingenous because I very much doubt you’d have ever started this Pit thread if Esprix weren’t as well-liked as he is. In other words, by starting this thread, you’ve made yourself look like ten times the attention whore you claim Esprix is, which makes you look like a big ol’ hypocrit.
Anyway, that’s my impression, take it or leave it.
