Almonds (roasted, no salt)- I can make myself almost sick on them if I don’t watch it.
Close second- macadamias for taste and texture. (Gomer Pyle has had 3 threads in the past few days, 2 in the top as of this writing- some trivia is that Jim “Gomer” Nabors is one of the nation’s largest macadamia planters, and it’s a very hands-on involvement, not just an investment.)
I love almonds, pistachios, pecans, walnuts, peanuts, macadamias- but cashews are definitely #1 with me.
I probably shouldn’t admit this (I must be the only person in the world who feels this way), but I really don’t care for chocolate covered peanuts, or Reese’s peanut butter cups. I love peanut butter and I love chocolate, but it’s just not a good combination for me. I don’t like Snickers or any candy bar with chocolate and peanuts.
I think it must be the sweetness, because I also don’t like peanut butter & jelly, or honey roasted peanuts. When I eat Cracker Jack, I throw away the candy-coated peanuts. Then again, I love eating peanuts (especially dry-roasted) while washing them down with Pepsi, so maybe it’s just certain taste combinations. One of my favorite things in the world is peanut butter toast with sliced bananas on it.
This is me. I love all culinary nuts (regardless of botanical classification). Cashews and pistachios are rich indulgences, eaten one at a time and savored. My least favorite nut is the Brazil, but only because they’re such a bitch to shell. I will eat handsful of Brazil nuts if they’re pre-shelled.
By sheer amounts consumed, the peanut is it. I usually have a couple of jars of peanuts for general eating purposes (dry-roast and honey-roast, usually); great for a snack, great tossed into other foods. I’ll toss a handful in a bowl with some raisins and eat it as a meal on the go. I eat peanut butter nearly every day (vegetarian, so it’s great for protein). Peanut candy bars? Peanut butter ice cream? Peanut brittle? Boiled peanuts? Yum.
I love all nuts, too. At the tender age of 25 I took my first job away from home in beautiful Newport News, VA, which was a revelation to a western PA girl. My supervisor owned a peanut farm, and he would sell us big fat Virginia peanuts in 50# burlap sacks for an absurdly low price. We called them “Sicknuts”, because you’d put a handful of salt in a blender to powder it, dust a baking tray of raw peanuts and roast them in the oven. When they came out piping hot, you’d eat them until you got sick because you absolutely couldn’t stop. Oh Jeebus, they were good!
Every Christmas I make spicy hot Bourbon Pecans - they are to die for!
Damn, I want some nuts now!
Around here I’ve only seen two butternut trees in my whole life. One was on grandpas farm at the top of a field on a fence line. I was a good climbing tree. I couldn’t stand the meat though. The nuts are neat though. I actually would like to walk to the hill again, and see if the DNR has destroyed it or not. The problem is it’s now about a two mile walk through obstacles in mostly lowland areas, next to the Baraboo river, which had super bad flooding this year.
I almost bought some “Garlic Peanuts” at Sam’s Oriental Grocery yesterday, but I thought that would be a bit much on top of Tokyo Mix rice crackers and roasted peas.
Most nuts make me want to throw up (this thread makes me queasy), though I always liked Peanut Butter, Nutella (which made me realize that I guess I must like Hazelnuts), and really salty beer nuts, but once I discovered that now I’m only allowed to eat plain Macadamias, I gave them a try, and found I LOVE them (thank goodness)! They’re very expensive, but the cost keeps me from eating too many.
Ditto. The nut shop in the Pike Place Market is one of the things I miss most about living in Seattle. The only Brazils I can get around here are in cans of mixed nuts and there are never enough Brazils.
I go there from time to time. It’s a half-mile from the office, so Pike Place is a frequent destination on my afternoon break. (I don’t take the morning break.) When I get nuts there, I get some cashews and filberts.
Pecans are my favorite (they’re just so tasty!) followed by cashews, then peanuts. I like pistachios, but they are a bit difficult to eat. Stupid shells.
Brazils. I’m not sure if the difficulty of getting the tasty little devils out of the shell plays a role, though. The episode of House where the guy accidentally gave himself selenium poisoning has made me rather wary of them, though…
Not quite nuts, but I love sunflower seeds - especially Davids, and double especially Davids Jumbo seeds (which are hard to find; they seem to be carried only by some gas station convenience stores, like Pilot).
I can’t comment on regular nuts because I don’t like any of them - not even peanuts!
