As a woman, I am not surprised. I don’t know that I myself am impervious to pain at the exact time since I haven’t timed it. But I do know that my pain threshold DRAMATICALLY increases as I approach it. To the point where pain feels very very good. Whereas the same stimulation 5 minutes prior would have made me cry.

I dispute the article’s assertion that this was the first MRI of orgasmic response in women.
The study in the last link makes references to previous MRIs done in the early 2000s. AFAIK widespread MRI use came on the scene in the mid '80s. If I was in charge of MRI studies you’d bet I’d find a way to get masturbating women in my lab. They’ve done people having sex in MRIs too.

I’ve had MRI’s before, and you have to lie really, really still. I can’t imagine doing what they asked these women to do and remain really, really still.
Well, the head has to be still if you want to scan the brain… there are ways to do that. Make a dental imprint on dental cement then fix it to a plastic frame and have people bite on it, for instance.
I can think of few things less sexually stimulating than lying in an MRI machine.
“Pretend you’re married.”
