Battlestar Galactica 4.17 - "No Exit" (spoilers)

Spoiler policy (revised as of last week; please make note): If you want to discuss a plot point from an upcoming episode, something you know is going to happen because it’s been revealed in interviews or some other canon source, including the preview for the following week, put it in a spoiler box, and label the box so we can decide for ourselves whether or not it’s something we want to know (example here). If you’re simply speculating about what might happen in an upcoming episode, or if you’re discussing something that has already aired in the episode (not including the preview), there’s no need for a spoiler box.

Regarding episode numbering, see comment here. Note also that in the link to the preview below, and on the official scifi/battlestar site, this is officially episode 417, despite what’s found on other sites.

This week’s episode title: “No Exit.” Written by Ryan Mottesheard; directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton. (This is Mottesheard’s first writing credit, though he’s been a script coordinator on the show since season two; Horder-Payton has not worked on BSG before now, but directed several episodes of “The Shield.”)

Sci-Fi’s preview for the episode. Also, from Canada’s Space network, a very different preview. Middling spoiler in the first, potentially significant spoiler in the second. Click at your own risk.

Links to previous threads, for anyone who wants to review:

4.8 - “Faith” (in which Starbuck’s crew finds the wounded basestar, and Roslin deteriorates in Galactica’s sickbay)

4.9 - “Guess What’s Coming to Dinner” (in which Starbuck’s crew returns with the basestar; Gaeta sings about his missing leg; the Cylons propose destroying the Resurrection Hub, and then immediately begin scheming to betray humanity while the humans do the same; Athena murders the Six Natalie; and Roslin gets “kidnapped” when the hybrid panics and jumps)

4.10 - “Sine Qua Non” (in which the disappearance of Roslin prompts a search for a replacement President, and erratic behavior from Adama; Cottle reveals that Tigh has impregnated Caprica Six during his “interrogations”; Lee is chosen and sworn in as interim President; Adama relinquishes command to search for Roslin; and the character of Romo Lampkin is made considerably less interesting)

4.11 - “The Hub” (in which Roslin’s isolated basestar crew, human and Cylon together, cooperate to destroy the Hub without the help of the fleet)

4.12 - “Revelations” (in which a mutually-assured-destruction standoff is resolved when Lee abruptly finds a compromise to achieve a tentative peace, and human and Cylon gaily traipse off to the now-known location of Earth, only to find it was turned into a radioactive cinder long ago)

4.13 - “Sometimes a Great Notion” (in which the discovery of the ruined Earth has serious repercussions for the fleet, and various people melt down and give up: Roslin burns her scriptures, Adama begs Tigh to kill him, and Dee shoots herself, among others; the Penultimate Four experience flashbacks while on Earth, and realize that they lived there two millennia ago; Starbuck finds her own corpse in the wreckage of her viper, and Leoben wigs out; and Ellen Tigh is revealed as the Final Cylon)

4.14 - “A Disquiet Follows My Soul” (in which Adama presses the fleet to tolerate the Cylons and adopt their technology, causing resentment to grow in the fleet, including among Colonial officers, chiefly Gaeta, who begins plotting resistance efforts with Zarek, while Baltar stokes negativity of his own; Tyrol discovers he’s not the father of his child; and Roslin finally joins Adama in his bunk)

4.15 - “The Oath” (in which mutiny explodes, led by Zarek and Gaeta; all known Cylons on Galactica, except Tyrol, are confined in the brig; and Tyrol helps Roslin and Baltar flee the battlestar, with the assistance of Adama and Tigh, who have escaped their own captors, and who choose to stay behind to defend their ship)

4.16 - “Blood on the Scales” (in which the mutineers target Adama for execution; Roslin and Baltar escape to the basestar; Zarek has the Quorum liquidated; Adama, aided by Starbuck, Apollo, and Tyrol, retakes his ship, though Anders is badly injured; and Zarek and Gaeta eat a firing squad’s bullets for their crimes)

And thus does the countdown continue…

Since you started the thread, Cervaise, what are your druthers about play-by-play commentary 1 made in real time?
AKA Snarky remarks about characters and plot.

If we get a vote, I say let people post while they’re watching if they want. These threads don’t even make it to a second page till a day or so after the show, so it is not as if there is an enomous amount of that – it is easily (trivially) skimmed over.

I agree that open spoilers from previews is uncivil (although I’m still gobsmacked that anyone manages to avoid the damn things, moreover believe 'em). But getting the vapors over having to read a few posts of cryptic and excited one-line posts? little too much the drama queen, methinks.

I honestly don’t have an opinion about it [edit: “it” being “live comments during the airing of the show”]. While I can see how it would be annoying to someone, it doesn’t really bother me. And since we have only a few shows left, I figured I’d just keep my mouth shut and let it play out, rather than risking a dust-up in the closing weeks over something a lot of people clearly enjoy. (I mean, there was a little stress about the spoiler policy. Why invite more argument?)

Also, I haven’t really said anything about this because, hey, I’m just the OP. I don’t really have any sort of authority here, and I’m certainly not a moderator with powers of enforcement. I suggest some guidelines, based on my perception of what makes a successful discussion, and I’m gratified to see that they’re generally accepted and followed, but I do not, at all, have the power to lay down the law or anything.

Besides, Lightray is correct, it’s a page, maybe, before the show’s complete and we’re on to regular discussion; it’s not like the “Lost” threads where “live commentary” can go two and sometimes three pages. So even if it’s an irritation, it’s a small one, in my view. I am willing to have my mind changed but I’ll observe the debate from the sidelines rather than wading into it (and please, start another thread, if you want to hash it out, rather than sidetracking this one).

The one place I might understand a reasonable exception is for the show’s finale, which will be two hours long, and probably very intense and eventful, inviting much “OMG DID U SEE THAT” and the like. It’s conceivable that segregation of that stuff would be desirable. For that one, I think, a “live” thread and a “post-show” thread – or perhaps one thread with a clear demarcation, “live show starts here” and “post-show starts here” – could be the best approach. For now, though, I didn’t see any reason to get into it. At least, until you asked me directly.

Wishy washy? Meh. I’ll live. :stuck_out_tongue:

Color me baffled, why would anyone care about live commentary? either you are also watching the show while reading the dope or you just dont open the thread until after you see the show. Its not rocket science.
for instance I wont be back in this thread until late tonight at the earliest, some of you basterds get it a full hour before I do. (yeah bastard it just works better with that spelling)

There were fewer than usual commenting while the program was on last week, so I wanted to see if I needed my own thread and recruit some folks to watch and post tonight.
Where are you that the Sci Fi channel is an hour later?

There’s always going to be pre-chat, right? Most of us try to watch the time-stamps and see when it’s unsafe. But, should everyone in the world be excluded from pre-chat? Maybe someone just saying “show has started!” would be nice. I don’t expect it, but it would be nice before being the first one to say “OMG, I can’t believe they killed so-and-so!”

OMG! They killed Kenny!

Sorry.

BSG fans don’t say, “OMG!” They say, “Holy shit!”

“Holy Shit! They killed Gaeta!”

I’m expecting a slower paced episode tonight. The last two weeks have been intense, action-oriented stuff. Time for something a little different…maybe answer certain questions we’ve been discussing. And maybe some naked Six.

Well, based on the previews we’re going to get hit in the face with a huge question, but I bet we don’t get an answer.

Hah! I avoid spoiler boxes again!

Live show starting now…

Live show starting now…

New intro…

Nice opening recap, especially nice seeing the TOS toasters/basestars/Raiders

And Ellen wakes up in the Tub-O-Snot™…

We just saw about as much of naked Ellen as possible on American TV. Sam’s channeling the Hybrid.

Nice little Stockwell quip there…

[to nude Ellen] “I’ll get you some clothes, after all, i’ve seen it all before”

and we now know Cavil’s first name, John

Looks like it is going to be Bondex and duct tape.

Hmm, so Ellen was one of the Original Programmers

Fun little Ellen/Cavil snarkfest though…

So Ellen Tigh was the architect of the other Cylons. I wonder what that will mean.

There’s a 13th Cylon model?!!
