I think my position would be, if you’re willing to ignore the results that come out of the official NFL-run event that tells you how big players are, why not change the rest, too? Hyperbole about ball bearings aside, it would be a pretty decent scandal if a player whose size measurements could potentially influence them being the number one pick were significantly goosed. What’s the theory here - Bryce Young is going to show up at the first day of practice weighing 185 and the Panthers are just going to be like fuckin’ good one man, you got us.
I’m sticking with this: Kyler was 5-10 207 at the combine. Bryce Young was 5-10 204. They’re about the same size. Writing off Kyler Murray would not have been smart, and I don’t think writing off Young would be smart.
Pretty much. I think teams have made peace with this. Plenty of guys get in Combine shape and show up to camp a little doughier and a little slower. It’s just part of the program. When a guy shows out “out of shape” it’s big news, ala Jalen Carter. The reality is that he’s basically showing up at his normal training camp weight. If you aren’t “gaming the system” heading into the Combine it’s a red flag.
Young is unique because his size is such an outlier and because he didn’t do any of the workouts, making it so that his gaining a bunch of water weight or whatever wouldn’t be a trade off against his 40 time.
Every player does it, sure. But that’s a reason to look at 204 and say OK, he’s at 204, same as you look at Vernon Gholston or whoever and say OK, he can run a 4.5.
Young is only unique if we stipulate that he must be unique because he looks slight. If we go by the numbers, he played at 190-something in college and he is 204 at the combine. If we go by the numbers, Kyler (whose size was important) played at 195ish in college and was 207 at the combine. Both are very small; I just wouldn’t entirely write off Young based on it.
NFL Rookie of the Year and two time ProBowler Kyler Murray? Sure, he wouldnt go #1 (Dickhead Nick Bosa likely would), but Murray was and is the best QB in the draft class by a huge margin (Although I do love me some of the Moustached Wonder).
Sure, now we have the benefit of knowing that he’s immature, and his torn ACL, but hell yeah there is no way he’d drop out of the first round.
