You seem to be treating the media and Democrats as the same thing, and saying things “will happen” that contradict things that have already happened–both groups have already called this insurrection and Dems are pushing right now for articles of impeachment. It’s rather weird in general to attack people for what you assume they will do, anyways.
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) put the blame for the chaos unfolding in the Capitol on Wednesday firmly on the shoulders of his Republican colleagues: “This is what you’ve gotten, guys,” Romney was heard yelling as “mayhem unfolded in the Senate chamber, apparently addressing his colleagues who were leading the charge to press Mr. Trump’s false claims of a stolen election,” The New York Times reports.
When the joint session reconvenes, no matter when and where, could an impeachment motion be introduced by a House member for the House to vote on; and if it passes, followed by a Senate vote to remove? Do they really need anything else? (Just wondering what could be done on the double-quick in this regard.)
If there was a left wing equivalent to this - if Trump won the election and left wing people stormed the capitol in exactly this same way - do you guys agree that the police would be shooting, gassing, and beating them, and that there would be mass arrests?
There is a systemic bias in policing towards favoring right wing nutjobs. Left wing actions are brutalized, right wing actions are treated with kid gloves and even in some cases faciltiated by law enforcement.
Best piece of news all night so far, thank you. Se non è vero, è ben trovatto.
Seen from Europe: this is crazy. And dangerous. I hope you know what you are doing…
As an aside: I was in Spain on 23. February 1981, when shots fell inside the Cortes (the Spanish Parliament) during the voting and swearing in of the new Prime Minister (equivalent to your President in powers, mutatis mutandis). So the same situation: transition of power from Suárez to Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo. The events in Whashington remind me strongly of this events in my youth (I was 17…). There were rumours then that tanks were on the streets in Valencia (today I read: Georgia et al). There were, they just went back into the barracks without firing a shot. It took ages before the King spoke on TV, that stopped it (very abridged version, but this is about official school history). We had just two TV channels back then. The other channel showed, if I remember well, The Bridge on the River Kwai. Is any channel showing that film in the USA?
But you don’t even have a king! (BTW: That very same king turned out to be a tax evader, a womanizer, a big game hunter, and a bit corrupt. Never mind). Who could speak today and be listened to if (s)he tries to calm things down?
I hope this was not too much of a distraction, just wanted to say: where you are today others have been before. In Spain’s case it even turned out to be mostly for the good. Didn’t it?
Anyway, this thread has been great to get an overview of what is happening chez vous. Thank you all! Good luck!
Me too, at least the tail end of them. I was 17 and still in high school in northern Virginia when the May Day 1971 protests happened in DC. They rounded up thousands of protesters. I almost went, not knowing how it was going to play out, but a friend talked me out of it at the last minute.
