I wonder if the army is trying to keep itself as far away from Trump as possible. I could totally see them trying to avoid:
General: Sir, do we have permission to deploy the national guard?
Trump: Yes, AND ARREST ALL DEMOCRATS!

Agreed, I’d call them protesters and I think they should be arrested.

Remember when Adam Schiff was giving his closing arguments for the impeachment trial? He said that the Republicans were saying that there would be an election within a year, that we should let the American people decide, and besides, how much damage can he really do by then… and Schiff said “a lot. A lot of damage.”
You may be right about their emotional maturity, but they stormed the fucking US Capitol by force. That’s open rebellion. How is that not a threat to our democracy?
I would have been fine with gunning them down en masse.
We can’t normalize the idea that violence can stop lawmaking (witness the Pennsylvania state fracas yesterday). If they were occupying a university building or something I’d agree with you.
Or at least, AFAICT nothing in the operating language about that situation (25th Amendment and Succession Act) explicitly requires that the Acting POTUS has to designate an Acting Veep (The Succession Act was passed before the 25th so it did not contemplate a replacement for the VP at all, instead reverting to the historic pattern of whoever’s next and still alive and qualified). As previously discussed the Succession Act and the 25th have some “well, but how likely is THAT to ever happen” disconnects but that would be the least of our problems.
I will celebrate it. Good.
Absolutely not. NO. This post is 100% wrong. It is also dangerously wrong.
I agreed with this for a while today, until some of them actually entered the senate and house chambers. I can’t exactly explain why, but that was when I went from “don’t give them the publicity they crave; and they’re too cowardly to do anything truly dangerous” … to … “Law enforcement must round up every one of these fuckers and the court must throw the book at them — hundreds will spend many years in jail, and it’s possible several of them will face capital punishment.”
They MUST be made an example of. Otherwise, it will just keep happening.
Pictures of rioters climbing the walls around the Capitol There’s already a meme about how much good walls can do.
To little too late. And dollars to donuts, these limp “calls” will amount to nothing. No one will be imprisoned, no one will be impeached, no one will be censured. Business as usual.
I fucking sick of being the party of pussies.
We’ll see who’s wrong.
The Joint session of Congress has said that nothing that happened today will stopp them from doing their job.
These people accomplished only one thing today. Riling up the media
Trump’s latest tweet (saw it on NBC so can’t link to it) is possibly the most sickening thing I’ve ever seen. It basically celebrates what happened today with no rebuke or regret whatsoever.
Does anyone know what directions Trump gave the crowd at the rally?
I’m not sure. I haven’t gotten that far on lawyer Twitter! Ideally that situation wouldn’t last too long.
I wonder why? They didn’t seem to feel that the rioters were of much concern.
No, there’d be internment camps and firing squads. It’d be Tiananmen Square.
I wouldn’t have, but quite frankly if that happened, a lot less of them would show up in the future. I bet they like having a martyr for their cause, but few of them want to die a martyr’s death.
The Capitol was the obvious target of the protest. The Capitol police should have had nearly all the exits locked and chained, and been ready to secure the few remaining exits in a hurry if need be. How that didn’t happen is beyond me. There should not have been a mass invasion of the building.
Once there was, though, surely there’s a P.A. system. Announcements could have been made that protesters had X minutes to clear the building; after that, the police would use force to expel any remaining protesters. After that point, shoot if need be.
I’ve been giving 30-50% odds on 25A before Jan 20th for some time now, although I don’t recall if I posted that on the SDMB. I think it’s pushing past 50% now.
I realize predicting 50% odds of anything is weaseling- how can you lose? But a breech on the Capitol today was one of the requirements for a 25A/quick impeachment and removal scenario. Another prediction I made but didn’t post here was that protesters would breech the Capitol (that one was a certainty once the GA senate results came through) -although I didn’t think it would happen until after dark.
Now, if after today, Trump starts tweeting stuff like “Joe Biden must be prevented by taking office by any means necessary “ …I don’t think it’s a stretch to think we could get 17 Republican senators willing to prevent civil war.
The only catch, and the reason I’m only at 50%- is that a quick removal not go to far in preventing civil war…that will really piss off the insurgents.
If I’ve ninjaed anyone, I apologize. I was out this afternoon and I haven’t been able to catch up with the thread, but I needed to write, it’s an outlet.
Here you go.

It’s 100% mafia-boss phrasing. Rile up the troops about the injustice to your family, then wink and shrug and adjourn the meeting.
