Not watching but a friend just told me he is from my district in VA

Looking at this DC crowd, the ones who aren’t cosplaying their Marvel/Military slash fic look like they star in ‘Bear’ porn channels. I know one guy was definitely in that ‘redneck threesome’ video I saw the other day.

The thing is, even if a bunch of Democrats forgot to set their alarms this morning and one of these objections were to succeed, there is no doubt in my mind - absolutely none - that the state in question would immediately sue and would win. (I’d bet they have the lawsuits written and ready to go already, just in case.)

The Constitution is really clear on this; electors are chosen by the states. It is not Congress’s job to reject electors. You cannot honestly read the Constitution and come away with any other interpretation.

The Electoral Count Act, technically, allows for this farce, but this clearly wasn’t the intent of it. The intent of the ECA was to fix problems when there was ambiguity as to what a state’s electoral votes actually were, as was of course the case with the 1876 fiasco, or less disastrously the situation in 1960 when Hawaii sent electoral votes for Nixon and, oops, actually, sorry, guys, Kennedy won the state. The idea that Congress could tell a state “You know what? Fuck you guys. Your votes don’t count” was never the idea behind the ECA, and is not just against the wording of the Constitution but its clear and only logical intent. There isn’t any point in having an election at all if Congress can just choose their own winner in defiance of the electoral college, so why did the guys who wrote the Constitution come up with the first part of Article II at all?

Biden to nominate Merrick Garland as attorney general.

Let the implications of that sink in for a minute.

Which state crosses the 270 line when sorted alphabetically?

Soooo, Arizona is unconstitutional now?

I do hope the 2 senators from Arizona smack down over in the senate.

Rep. Scalice justified throwing out Arizona’s votes by saying Secretaries of State and other election officials should not be bullied into giving a desired outcome. I wonder if he will use the same argument when objecting to Georgia’s votes.

Vermont, I believe. It came up in a thread yesterday.

Please tell me this is true. Trolling the trollers.

Putting aside for a moment that this virtue signaling is an appeal to the country’s worst group of voters, the strategical implications are fascinating.

All of these congressional objectors are betting that pledging fealty to Donald will pay off in their next election. And for Reps and even Senators up in '22 and '24, that could very well be true.

But for someone with POTUS ambitions in '24, it’s a terrible risk, whether Trump remains influential or not. If The Don is still a force, he’s going to run again and said Ambitious One is thoroughly cucked. If he’s not still a force, that means the movement itself is dying and aligning oneself with it implies an incorrect strategical move.

Still, those 70+ million voters to be had out there have to be tempting as hell.

I posted this in the American Coup thread last night but it’s totally relevant to the live action of the hour.

That post contains the crucial boxed link to the article. The preview just above in this thread removes that link. Here it is again to save y’all a click:

Mitch is on at the Senate and effectively saying that their is no reason for this debate as any fraud is nowhere near enough to change the election and that the voters and states have spoken. So another stake in Trump’s heart.

Sounds like McConnell is trying to save what’s left of his career.

Trump supporters try to storm the Capitol:

I wonder if he’d feel that way if he weren’t about to be Senate Minority Leader.

Yeah, it’s real bizarro-world stuff hearing McConnell passionately (well, for him) arguing for the side of right and Democracy, like he’s frickin’ Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

Well, he has mentioned about how those evil Democrats protested all those earlier elections, but the Republicans are such wonderful people they shouldn’t follow them… Gee, and I was just going to same something nice about him…

I’m glad coverage switched over to the senate when I saw Jordan on the house side wildly gesticulating.

I was just thinking that. And his voice is sounding like Jimmy Stewart’s in places too.

Yeah, his voice was so wavery and cracking in places it sounded almost like he was on the verge of tears. And maybe he was. Guess it’s gottta be hard to accept his upcoming minority leader status (whaa-whaaa).
