6 January 2021; A Day worth a Thread

On MSNBC a pretty good exchange between Hayes and Maddow about the absurdity of the fact that Congress is pontificating instead of addressing the madman with the keys to the military. Also that the police arrested nobody and they traitors are home bragging about their exploits.

From my perspective, what you are claiming would be McConnell being stupid. It would be giving Trump a foothold.

Voting against party lines is different. There wasn’t a power struggle then. This is McConnell vs. Trump.

And, as others have shown, he could just as easily have said he was going to object but won’t anymore. They got their cover from the insurrection, so that argument is out.

I see no reason he wouldn’t punish anyone who continues to hold water for the guy who is challenging him for control of the Republican party. That is what this is.

As a point of order, it is a system of mistrust built on decorum and norms.
And the fabled checks and balances if the Founding Fathers haven’t stood up that well either.

And when people argue that the US presidential system is one of the USA’s most dangerous exports because of it’s inherent tendency to deadlock, you can see just how easy it is to unravel.

I like what congress is doing right now. The mob tried to disrupt the vote; I think it’s important that they finish it first.

Pence is getting a lot of love for doing his job.

I dunno. If your support is mostly from the deeply red people who cheered the insurrection then you need to go with that.

I do not know whether he is a loon on his own or if he read the electoral tea leaves and felt he had to throw his base raw meat even now.

Has Pompeo weighed in yet? I tried Google and didn’t see anything.

And if you can’t trust Twittter, who can you trust?

First time in 4 years he dared to do his job. Hey, maybe he’ll get to be president for a couple weeks.

His wife, Elaine Chao, is currently secretary of transportation.

~Max, who should read the rest of the thread before posting.

Trump and his terrorists can go a lot of damage while these blowhards are getting their 5 minutes.

Yes, Congress should certify the results. It should take 5 minutes total and be done by assent. Every self-aggrandizing word spoken is time wasted, fiddling while Washington burns. And any words in opposition to that are sedition and should be punishable by death.

[John McEnroe] You cannot be serious! They just let them walk out?

To be fair, his only job is to cast the tie breaking vote in the Senate.

Well, and maybe protect the space-time continuum.

George Will has a column out tonight that opens with:

“The three repulsive architects of Wednesday’s heartbreaking spectacle — mobs desecrating the Republic’s noblest building and preventing the completion of a constitutional process — must be named and forevermore shunned. They are Donald Trump, and Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz.”

Remember when this guy was Mr. Republican?

Can McConnell simply refuse to give any of the traitors any time to talk if they object to another state?

To be fair, VPs have precious few official duties. Mostly they have to go where the president sends them to do shit the president doesn’t want to.

Unless you are Dick Cheney in which case you are the power behind the throne.

Lindsey Graham is now rejecting this as a ‘bad idea’. Old Lindsey is running out of faces to show…

I’m sure Trump managed to install loyalists in high positions in the Capitol Police. The White Hoyse has been very busy installing loyalists throughout.

And I think they are biased and believed the bullshit about how all right-wingers protesters are inherently peaceful because they are the party of tolerance and love, you know…Trump’s Opposite Day routine.

I said a couple of weeks ago that there was a chance Trump would be removed from office before Jan 20th, and everyone thought I was being dramatic. But I don’t think we are there yet. Now if Trump tries to organize another million MAGA event in DC on Inauguration Day, someone will have to act somehow. Oh, who am I kidding, they still probably won’t care.
