Just so I’m clear: I’m all for impeachment if we can do it (or at least substantially get through most of it) by January 20 (or at least the end of the month). Maybe I’m wrong this time and maybe there really is momentum to do it, which would be great. I just don’t want to see it disrupt Biden’s agenda.
Earlier, McConnell had said that the Senate won’t take up the vote for impeachment until the 20th. In that article, Biden asks McConnell if the Senate could confirm Biden’s cabinet while holding a Senate trial.
In this article, Schumer says that the Senate doesn’t have to wait until the 20th.
I agree. I made exactly the same point on another message board yesterday.
If they vote to impeach Trump, and also ban him from seeking office again, I think that they can effectively (although not immediately) kill Trumpism as an electoral force on the national level. There will still be Trumpists around, of course, but Trump is the glue that holds these morons together, and without him I don’t think that someone like Josh Hawley can do it. Say what you like about Trump, but he has a unique style and personality that is magnetic to a particular type of embattled conservative.
Without Trump, I think that the Republican establishment like McConnell would move to reassert themselves as the core leadership of the party. The Trumpists throughout the country would cry betrayal and there would probably be some riots and violence, but I don’t think that these idiots have what it takes to organize themselves without the Cheeto-Faced Shitgibbon rallying them together, and neither Trump’s Republican supporters (Hawley, Cruz, etc.), nor his gormless offspring, have the charisma to do it.
Then we might be able to return to a situation where the Republicans are just garden-variety obstructionist, Democracy-hating, hypocritical assholes.
I think the best case for both Dems and non-insane Republicans would be to impeach him, drive Trumpism out of the party, and then try rebuild a party that can win by being popular, not by cheating. We can go back to civilized fights with them.
And if that happens, the Trumpists can form their new splinter party. For my SDMB pool entry, I predict they’ll name it The Patriot Party.
In the video of the officer being berated with the flag, you see one of the insurgents take his riot helmet off the officer’s head and put it on his own. In the video they were using police shields and mace against the police. The action in that video was just vicious and horrifying.
The injuries stated tonight on the floor of Congress are heartbreaking.
I think what really needs to happen at this point is that the Republicans who have “seen the light” at this point need to have a serious heart to heart discussion with their colleagues.
They need to make it plain that they are either on board with impeachment NOW, or they completely utterly throw in with the people that attacked the Capitol, put 50 police in hospital (some by being beaten with the American flag, killed police and literally TOOK A SHIT in the seat of American government.
That’s it. Make a choice. The Republican Party, or the seditionist mob of cop-killers.
“With just eight days left in the President’s term, you and the Democratic caucus are demanding that the Cabinet and I invoke the 25th Amendment. I do not believe that such a course of action is in the best interest of our nation or consistent with our Constitution,” Pence wrote.
