7 Jan 2021 and beyond - the aftermath of the storming of the Capitol

Yes! This is the answer.

Weren’t Big Things supposed to happen today, Jan 17th? Are Big Things happening anywhere?

Naw. There are two football games on today. Maybe tomorrow if they haven’t used up their sick days.

Was this a promise from the lunatic insurrectionists, or from their orange leader?

I imagine the lunatic insurrectionists are watching with a good deal of slack-jawed amazement as one after another of their compatriots gets arrested and charged. The FBI has suggested that they turn themselves in because they’re coming after every last one that can be identified. And I bet most of the ones who are facing federal charges are singing like canaries.

Washington Post as a live updates page today, seems pretty quiet so far:

Not sure where to post this… but it’s very cool. Jose Andres ROCKS!

More than 25,000 members of the United States National Guard have been called up to protect the nation’s capital in the wake of the violent insurrection incited by Donald Trump on Jan. 6. Between the troops, the fences, and the near-empty sidewalks and streets, images from the District of Columbia ahead of the historic inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are far more reminiscent of a war zone, rather than the joyful celebration of the fall of Trump’s cruel regime.

Enter humanitarian and national treasure Chef José Andrés, who—in between writing books, suing Trump, and opening roughly 20 restaurants—has made it his personal life mission to feed the people of the world when they are in crisis. Whether it’s a hurricane or an earthquake, a pandemic or a wildfire, Chef Andrés’ World Central Kitchen (WCK) volunteers are never far behind … with healthy, tasty meals for anyone who needs them.

With the District, where Andrés lives, on a surreal post-insurrection lockdown ahead of the inauguration on Wednesday, and tens of thousands of soldiers arriving to protect it, you can probably see where this is going.

Not paywalled, but an extremely lefty site. Watch out-- you may get cooties.

I’m sure that will be the Republicans’ defense since the ones not wearing the masks don’t believe in masks. But for those who believe in science, it’s a pretty strong coincidence that now 5 lawmakers and one lawmaker’s husband all got the virus around the same time and were sheltering in place with the maskless Republicans.

Even Fox News says that with 3 people, there’s a possible connection. That was 3 infections ago.

There was a Republican who tested positive for coronavirus hours after voting against the Biden certification on Wednesday night. There wasn’t information on whether he was one of the maskless Republicans sheltered in place during the riot.

Would it surprise anyone if a plot to purposely infect elderly Democrats was uncovered? Nancy Pelosi in particular?

Science.

Here in Michigan, where these people almost kidnapped our Governor, have been quiet so far. Huge police presence in Lansing. Protesters did show up, but nothing much came of it and there were not many.

I saw something the other day that said, “If you were surprised by the Capitol raid, you failed to remember that Whitmer was almost kidnapped by these people recently.”

Yep. The reason that you’re not seeing more insanity is that the insurrectionist are genuinely shocked that law enforcement weren’t and aren’t taking their side. The ones storming the Capitol genuinely felt that they would be welcomed by police and ushered into the building. They were surprised that (a few selfies aside) they were met with resistance and actual gunfire when they stormed the building, and are out of their minds that insurgents are actually being arrested for their conduct. Facing consequences was something that never entered into their minds, and it’s taken a lot of the steam out of their willingness to force further confrontations.

They kind of were.

Check out how much more accurate this quote can be with one simple word change:

He’s right. History will judge us harshly, as it should, if we do not rise to the occasion and convict Trump.

– oh, you say, that’s not what Graham meant? It damn well should have been what he meant.

Snowboarder_Bo, discourse thinks I’m replying to you too much. And seems to be under the impression that other people aren’t posting in this thread.

I suspect that the insurrectionists are taken aback, not only by finding out that most of the cops aren’t on their side and that some of them are actually getting arrested, but also by finding out that their neighbors and family are turning them in and/or snarling at them instead of enthusiastically jumping on board. Many of them probably did really think that most of the country would be on their side.

Thus spake the Trump sycophant: “… the healing of this great nation …”

Why is it that whenever a slimy politician is grandstanding, the nation, or any given state, municipality, county, or arbitrary landmass, is always “great”?

Furthermore, Lindsay, you dumb fuck, there wouldn’t be any “healing” necessary if sycophantic enablers like you had not allowed the orange shit-gibbon to run amok for four years, inflicting damage on everything he touched and finally culminating in a goddam insurrection.

I want somebody to hold that dipshit’s (Graham) feet to the fire and get a straight answer to: “Healing from what, sir? Specifically?”

I am intensely curious to know what Trump has on ol’ Lindsey that is pushing him to do these things. Because I honestly cannot think of any other reason he’s going this far.

This is the kind of fundamental disconnect (and incredibly poor critical thinking skills) that we’re dealing with here folks:

Always the victim; never at fault.

Ok, here I am replying. Is discourse happier now?

I would ask him to show me absolute proof that he has stopped beating his wife.
