Tim Ryan, Democrat from Ohio, had some choice words for the GOP members who opposed the commission.
Ryan, a 10-term House member who has launched a bid for Ohio’s open Senate seat, said the opposition was a “slap in the face to every rank-and-file cop in the United States.”
“If we’re going to take on China, if we’re going to rebuild the country, if we’re going to reverse climate change, we need two political parties in this country that are both living in reality, and you ain’t one of them,” he said
Bolding mine. I love that statement.
that was an amazing speech.
i continue to be baffled at the loyalty to trump.
An update today:
And this is why they should end the filibuster. Because we know that when Republicans gain power that’s exactly what they will do anyway, whenever it suits them.
Time is running out for Democrats. And they’re wasting it on bullshit fantasies of bipartisanship.
I’ll bet Lil’ Mikey hisself would have voted against it.
Is establishing this commission really the filibuster hill we’d want to die on? I mean, I’m in favor of the commission and would love to see what it turns up, but it’s unlikely to change any minds or move the needle on voting patterns before the '22 election cycle.
If we’re going to nuke the filibuster, let it be for a new voting rights act that nullifies the voter suppression Republicans are otherwise likely to get away with. If we can solidify gains next year, commissions like this will be mostly moot anyway.
Once the filibuster is gone, it’s gone for all the other bills that need to be passed too. I think the Commission is the perfect bill to justify the change.
If it’s done properly, it may save lives, [ETA: and possibly the entire governmental system] by either preventing the next such attack or handling it a lot better when it happens.
They should presumably be investigating, not merely ‘whose fault was this?’, but ‘what was done badly that could have been done better, and how can we improve the chances of its being done better in the future?’
“Democrats may say this about officer safety; that is a lie. This is just a partisan attempt to smear Trump supporters.”
I’m pretty sure Empty Gee has said that already.
ETA: Aye; she has:
As I said, I’m in favor of this commission happening, but congressional investigations have (thanks to Benghazi) become all-too-common non-events. We don’t want people saying They killed the filibuster for this?
I feel like the filibuster-buster™ should ideally be a major, gamechanging, landmark piece of legislation of which most Americans will actually be aware.
Unfortunately, that’s not true. There’s the possibility to make an exception to the filibuster for whatever type of law is currently up for debate. There’s already exceptions in place, such as for voting on judges. So they could make another exception for bills establishing commissions. Since those rarely come up, it would hardly change the filibuster rule at all.
If the filibuster gets killed, I don’t give a fuck what people say afterwards.
Yes? I would love to gut the filibuster based on the voting rights allegations, but it very much seems that ship has sailed, suggesting they were unable to get all who caucus with the Democratic Party on board. So it’s good to move on to something else.
The fact that Republicans are trying to prevent a bipartisan led investigation into a terrorist attack on our country may in fact be one of those things to use to say “see, bipartisanship isn’t working.” It’s pretty bad that they’re fighting against this. It comes cross to those of us who vote Democrat as if they’re trying to hide something.
And we are the ones they need to convince. If all those who voted for the Democrats (and two Democratic-caucusing Independents) all agree that this proves we can’t work with the Republicans, then there remains no reason to keep the filibuster in place.
We don’t really have a lot of time here. The 2022 midterms can completely sink any chance to provide any meaningful consequences to this attempt to overthrow our government. And, if that happens, there is no reason it won’t happen again. Our democracy is under threat.
If it were me, I would be pushing really hard to argue to Democratic voters that we need to drop the filibuster to be able to protect our country. The REpublicans are willing to stop even a bipartisan investigation. The only reason to do this is because they know that such will find damaging things about them—how many sitting congresspeople conspired to help this coup attempt.
Now is not the time to be saying “it won’t really matter.” We have to actually try to make it matter. Fortunately, the Republican voters aren’t the ones we have to convince.
No, it’s not but that’s not relevant. The Republicans killed the filibuster; the Democrats should recognize that and say ‘fuck bipartisanship.’ There is no hill. There is no bipartisanship. I want democrats to stop being naive. I want Americans to stop being naive. Democracy is dying. And it really does require extreme remedies to protect America from the growing right wing menace.
The filibuster is dead. It’s a question of whether Democrats realize it.
Gosh, guys, why don’t the Republicans want to do this? Is it because elected Republicans were conspiring with the attackers?
Of course not! Why, Republican Representative Carlos Gimenez says the reason he knows nothing happened because he was meeting with people in his hotel room who said they were planning on attacking the Capitol @ 2pm, and what happened occured at 9, so he experienced a totally different attack:
Okay… now I’m curious as to who was in his hotel room.
Seems like they should open an investigation into this.
