That’s the same logic that my idiot cousin thinks exonerates Trump ——- the insurrectionists were already armed when they came to hear Trump speak, therefore Trump didn’t incite them! She also thinks the fact that some of the Capitol stormers were smoking weed means that it was really Antifa, because “Republicans don’t smoke pot”.
Of course, Trump mostly incited the insurrection on Twitter, his speech was just the pre-game pep rally.
In a memo, Trump’s attorney said the lawsuit “directly attacks” the First amendment, adding that the congressman took comments the former president made out of context and that the court should dismiss the lawsuit because “[t]he President’s absolute immunity forecloses the jurisdiction of this Court.”
In 2019, his attorneys argued in court that, as President, Trump could indeed shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not be subject to charges. In 2020, Trump claimed he had “absolute immunity” from Congressional subpoenas.
He even claimed that Article II of the Constitution gave him unlimited powers, saying:
“Then, I have an Article II, where I have to the right to do whatever I want as president, but I don’t even talk about that.”
But even without the power of the presidency behind him, Trump continues to claim he’s above the law.
As someone pointed out in a tweet in the article, there is no ‘Presidential immunity’. There’s a DoJ policy not to indict a sitting president. Trump, the President who overturned decades or centuries of tradition, is relying on tradition to protect him.
Immunity is right up there along with power, deference and adulation among the things Trump most enjoyed about holding the office. Imagine being a career adversary of the legal system and suddenly becoming untouchable. That must have been orgasmic for him, having the apparatus around him that would protect him so completely that he felt comfortable openly sneering at and taunting those powerless to enforce the law.
Depends a lot on whose President that President is or isn’t.
Saw my first “Biden’s not my president” bumper sticker a couple days ago. And no, that wasn’t the stupidest thing plastered on his (yes, his) car. Far from it.
I saw a “For Sale” sign in someones yard on an item I had an interest in, so I pulled off the road. Then I noticed their “FUCK BIDEN” poster. I drove away, laughing at the mental image of me hitting the “NO SALE” key on my register.
I was behind a big pickup recently. Big sign in the back window, “Fuck Biden and Fuck You for Voting for Him!”
I honestly don’t get the anger. Biden might not be this guy’s ideal president, but what’s he done to enrage people to this extent? He’s competent, polite, and relatively moderate. I get that he might be of a different political party, but jeeze, he isn’t going to to wreck America.
My preferred candidates lost to Reagan, Bush, Bush II, and Trump. While I wasn’t happy about any of those elections, there’s only one that even make me consider a “fuck you for voting for him” sign. (and even then I didn’t do it)
