You answered your own question.
I think it’s in response to a lot of anger (and disbelief) when Trump won. There were rallies and plenty of “Trump is not my president” and “Resist” signs at the time.
I will have to comment here that after what Trump ordered in Lafayette plaza and told others about ignoring election results leading to that happened on January 6th, those resisters had a very good point.
Yeah, that’s the point: it seems to be kind of mindless mimicry of the anger and disbelief when Trump won.
I mean, Republicans elect as POTUS a sleazy grifting reality-TV host with a shady business career, a disgusting history of racist and sexist rhetoric, a constant verbal diarrhea of shameless lies and insults on social media, and zero detectable knowledge of, interest in, or ability for the hard work of public service in political leadership. Many Democrats erupt in rage and disgust.
After four catastrophic years of reality-TV bumbling and corrupt misgovernance, Democrats elect as POTUS a highly experienced and competent (although far from perfect) political leader who immediately sets about mending fences and implementing policies that benefit ordinary Americans of all political stripes, all while maintaining a professional diplomatic demeanor and insisting on the need for cooperation and respect. Consequently, many Republicans… erupt in rage and disgust?
It seems to be mostly just monkey-see-monkey-do mimicry on the part of Republican partisans now. They’ve sunk so deep into “alternative facts” that they have nothing even remotely resembling an objective metric for what a responsible citizen should get mad about. It’s all just reflexive insults and outrage.
There is a faction of Americans (some if whom are in my family) who really do believe that the Democratic party agenda is out to wreck America. While some don’t assign any malice, instead believing that it’s just misguided and naive. Many more believe that Socialists, through the Democratic Party are literally out to change the country into the opposite of what it has been up until now. By putting the rights of minorities “over” the rights of true Americans. By turning the military into a toothless abomination. By trying to “outlaw” the police. By pushing Religious beliefs father and farther out of the mainstream. By doing so many more things contrary to the way it’s always been done; the way that is proven to work. Biden is gonna wreck America.
Ask them when they’re going to refuse their Social Security checks. Social Security is, by definition, socialist.
Tell them, ‘Equal rights for others doesn’t mean fewer rights for you. It ain’t pie.’
Ask them if they agree with the Taliban, since that’s what they want here.
Well, yes, @Johnny_L.A ; those folks are factually wrong. But that doesn’t alter that for many of them these mistaken beliefs are sincerely held. And these mistaken beliefs are driving their equally mistaken behavior. @mikecurtis is just pointing that out.
A whole 'nuther discussion is how these mistaken beliefs have been implanted in their heads. And how utterly irresistible these often hateful beliefs have been to so many supposedly decent people.
Yeah I guess. It’s hard to understand, but maybe they don’t get our disgust over Trump either.
Yeah I’ve had many of these discussions…
They’d be fine with ending Social Security, but since they’ve already paid into it for a lifetime, they deserve their check.
Equal rights are fine. God created everyone equal, even says so in the Constitution. it’s the meddling of the govt that’s screwing things up.
And just because those infidels claim to be on the side of God to justify their behavior, it’s different when you actually are on the side of God. Oh, and they behead non believers. Christians don’t do that.
That’s not how it works.
Really?
Thanks for the tip.
The point is. This is not just a matter of degrees for these people. They truly believe that their way of life is threatened. Even if you could convince them they’re mistaken on one or two of their points, their main point still exists.
They believe that the American Way that they grew up believing in is endangered. It doesn’t help that they’re not completely wrong. Many things are changing; will change. And you’ll be hard pressed to convince them it’s for the better.
I don’t dispute your assessment.
But if these people vote in candidates who end/phase out/reduce Social Security (and spend that money on upper-bracket tax cuts) because they don’t want gays to get married, or black/brown/immigrant people to advance based on merit, I have a hard time feeling sorry for them if they needed those checks.
I disagree. I don’t think they’re consciously echoing the Democratic reaction to 2106. I think they’d be just as idiotic and belligerent about Biden if Democrats had accepted Trump with 100% positivity. They just can’t accept that their hero lost, full stop.

The mother of fallen US Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who had asked to meet with GOP senators, will meet with at least 15 of them Thursday ahead of an expected vote on the January 6 commission that so far is short of the 10 Republican votes needed to pass.
Gladys Sicknick told reporters Thursday that she is hopeful her meetings will change their minds on whether to vote for a January 6 commission.
Thirteen Republican senators have declined to meet with her, according to a source with knowledge.
The names of those 13 haters of democracy need to be made public!
I know some of these may be legitimate scheduling conflicts, but as for the others … seriously? The man died defending the Capitol, and your political posturing is more important than spending a few minutes with his mother. You can display a shred of decency and still vote against the commission.
They got another one; from Ohio:
Pro tip: When the only thing your lawyer could truthfully say is “My client is f***ed.”, declining to comment is always the percentage play.
Senate Republicans have officially blocked the bill to create a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol. The vote was 54-35 with 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. Six Republicans voted with the Democrats. Eleven Senators did not vote, including two Democrats and four retiring Republicans.
