7 Jan 2021 and beyond - the aftermath of the storming of the Capitol

That is the least surprising detail of this entire affair.

The dramatically different populations of different counties means that, by itself, this stat doesn’t really tell us much of anything at all.

The 250 largest counties in the United States have a combined population of just over 202 million, or about 62 percent of the US population. I’d be willing to bet that 250 counties also typically produce about half of America’s nurses, rapists, bicycle riders, cat owners, and Pulitzer prize winners.

True. But it’s a much better bet that the 250 counties that produced half the insurrectionists were many of the smallest counties, not the largest.

I’m going to bet that if we plotted town or county population versus percentage of residents who were present at the insurrection we’d get a very clear inverse correlation. IOW: big city = almost entirely not there. Rural village = they sent a rep, if not 2 or 5. Best and brightest and all that…

Not in Kansas. According to that USA Today article, there were 7 folks arrested that were from Kansas. 3 of them live in Johnson County, the state’s most populous.

This does my heart good:

But this, blecccch, does not:

Here’s some news:

Subhuman piece-of-shit Rep. Paul Gosar demanded in a hearing yesterday the name of the Capitol Police officer who shot and killed Ashli Babbitt as she was breaking into the House chamber. He said that she was “executed” and the officer was, “hiding and lying in wait.” He of course was one of the 21 Republicans who voted against the Congressional Gold Medal for officers who defended the Capitol.

MTG may get all the press, but Gosar is just as much of a turd.

Ashli Babbitt died a traitor’s death. Gosar is indeed a piece of shit for demanding the name of the officer who shot and killed her. All this would do is put the officer’s life in danger.

It would also make other Capitol police think twice about protecting Congress.

I would be surprised if some have not already thought twice about protecting all of Congress.

And the next time these morons attack, they will go after anyone in a suit and tie.

Mob violence.

Wow, just wow. Like, “That jewelry display was so nice you made me smash the window and steal it” type reasoning.

There is no bizarre reimagining of recent history that Congressional Republicans will not stoop to if it means keeping The Orange One happy (and avoiding being primaried).

I recall public service announcements from the late 1960s urging people, "Don’t help a good boy go bad. Lock your car, take your keys".

Even as a young kid, I thought that was ridiculous. It seems that in 2021, the right has taken on that mantle.

According to the Census Bureau, as of 2019, there were 3193 counties in the United States.

Johnson County is the 162nd least populous, meaning there are more than 3000 counties with higher populations.

Better check your data. According to World Population Review, the 2021 population of Johnson County, Kansas, is 610,949, which ranks it #114 on the list of county size by population. 17 states have a county named Johnson.

My point still stands.

Hmmm…

According to Wikipedia, using 2019 Census Bureau info, Hudson County, New Jersey, has an estimated population of 672,391. From the same source, Johnson County, KS has an estimated population of 602,401.

It seems likely that Johnson County, KS is the 162nd most populous county. If you had 2900 counties between its population and Hudson County, NJ, they would have a total population of over 1.7 billion.

Damnit, I thought I had the list sorted from smallest to largest. Looks like I had it sorted the other way around.

[egg on face]

No words for what scumbags some Republican Congressmen are.

I think that is his intention.

There are 20 - 25 Republicans in Congress who are active participants in trying to overthrow an elected government, and are willing to encourage supporters to take violent means to do this. They are dangerous traitors. The fact that they are even allowed to vote on whether or not to investigate themselves for their part in an insurrection is just mind-blowing.
