A Labor Day Belated Birthday BBQ – The MMP

It lives.

Took me a good 45 minutes to unhook everything, remove the old board, put in the new one, hook everything back up again, and configure BIOS to get it all going, but it’s back in the land of the living with a shiny new and rather less blingy (but also far less expensive) motherboard, an Asus A8N SLI-SE. To my surprise it actually does have 2 SLI 16X slots – I thought it only had one. (Those are slots for video cards for us mega nerds who want to run two video cards in tandem, a process known as SLI. 16X is the speed of the slot, kinda like the old AGP slots where you had 1X, 2X or 4X.) Oddly enough it’s also laid out much more intelligently. On the old board the primary PCI-Express slot (where my video card goes) would overlap the first PCI slot (where other cards go) so I lost the use of it when I plugged my video card in. This new board has plenty of space between the PCI-E and the rest of the PCI slots. (Well, there’s the PCI-E 2X slot and the AMR slot that get obscured by the video card, but nobody ever uses those anyway, so I don’t care.)

The new board doesn’t have a FireWire block though so I lost the use of FireWire. Not that I have anything that uses it anymore, so I guess it’s not a huge deal. The important thing is that the system is working without a hitch, and hopefully will stay that way 'til I upgrade to the new standards.

BusDude - That’s because us techie geeks tend to use our systems for a whole lotta things, and may even do things like overclock our systems and stuff, so the hardware wears out quicker. The upshot is that I can fix whatever goes wrong without having to call anyone. The further down side is that this usually ends up costing money. :frowning:

appropriate reactions all around. nothing to add, other than to say I LOVE the Granny Bunny jar

Granny Bunny jar?

refer to** FCM**'s post

Ah. That explains it.

FCM–ooh! I like the winged monster and the star kitty!

I got to level 35 on that game–very addictive! but hard.

Hey Haze, ~waving~ as you pass by again.

Mork, sorry to hear about your computer troubles but glad you got it working again. When come back, tell us about Apple (iPod, not pie).

Oh sure. You get me to talk to you last night (your morning). And now you don’t even say hi. How rude!!

As opposed to what?

FCM, about the IRS letters. Your monsters are very cute!

gt, don’t forget the pictures of your Dope-Fest for those of us living vicariously.

rigs, I hope you feel better. Sorry, I’m not a poem person.
**
Jahdra**, I’m glad you canceled that interview. That one didn’t pass the smell test.

That sounds nasty. Mamatigs said to behave. You might be in BIG trouble, mister. :stuck_out_tongue:
Happy Friday to those that are already there and Happy Friday after sleeping for the rest! Good night and good morning y’all!

Maybe it’s just me but my system seems to take longer to boot now. shrug As long as it works. The old motherboard has a 3 year warranty, so I’m going to try and RMA it. Unfortunately Asus’ RMA procedure is annoyingly convoluted. I have to open a tech support ticket first, and only when a tech has determined that my motherboard is pooched will he approve an RMA. I took the liberty of detailing its symptoms and my diagnostic processes, along with a note that I’m a trained A+ tech, so hopefully they won’t make me jump through any hoops and just make with the RMA number.

Heff&Roo - Thanks. This motherboard will hopefully just be temporary 'til my old one gets back from RMA. Then I can spend another hour gutting it and replacing everything with the new-old board. Or something like that; it’s a discontinued product, but I assume they will support it through its warranty period.

As for Apple – well, it was simultaneously interesting and disappointing. In brief, the new iPods are:

Shuffle: Not much new. A (product) RED version will be sold with portions of the profits going to African charity, as well as several other new colours. (Link)

Nano: New version, dubbed by the masses as “iPod Phatty” because it is shorter and wider than the 2G Nano, though it is even thinner. Screen is larger (2") and higher resolution (320x240, same as iPod Video) and it is capable of playing video and the same iPod games that are available on the Video. New user interface displays cover art and visual icons on the menus, and features browsable cover flow, just like in iTunes. New capacities are 4GB and 8GB, with the 4GB coming in silver only and retailing for $149, and the 8GB coming in all available colours at $199. It will be bundled with two games pre-loaded: Vortex (cool), and Sudoku (not my thing, but lots of people love it.) I think the new form factor is kinda ugly - it looks bigger than its predecessor, even though it’s actually probably a bit smaller, and definitely thinner. (Link)

Video: Now dubbed “iPod Classic.” Screen is the same, user interface is the new remodeled one, same as on the new nano with the floating album art and cover flow and all that good stuff. Gone is the glossy plexiglass front. It is now an all-metal enclosure just like the 2G Nano, except the back is still chrome and still attracts fingerprints like a magnet. I have mixed feelings about this. The plexiglass certainly attracted fingerprints like mad and scratched if you thought about it too hard, but it was sexy. The new one, not so much. But it’s more durable. The new models are also a bit thinner than their predecessors. It will come in two flavours: 80GB is the new base model, and the high end doubles that for 160GB of storage. Price has dropped, too: $249 for the 80GB, and $349 for the 160GB. Sweet. (Link)

Touch: This is the new flagship of the iPod line. It is basically an iPhone without the phone. It’s got the same iPhone interface with multitouch, but also sports WiFi (802.11g) along with the Safari web browser and YouTube, but lacks the maps. It is considerably thinner than the iPhone (just 8mm thick) and a tad smaller to boot, and looks incredibly sexy. The dealbreaker (for me and lots of others, anyway) is that it only comes in 8GB and 16GB flash configurations – no hard drive – and will retail for $299 and $399 respectively. I would be all the hell over it if it had at least 30 gigs, but 16 just isn’t enough for me, not nearly. You suck, Steve. You suck. (Link)

iPhone: Nothing new technologically, but they’ve dropped the 4GB model entirely, and they’ve slashed the price of the 8GB massively: It now retails for $399. Existing iPhone owners who might feel burned by this will be able to witness something unprecedented: Apple is giving all existing iPhone owners $100 in Apple Store credit. Sure, it ain’t $200 in savings, but the fact that Apple is giving anything at all is pretty damn sweet. (Link)

Misc: iTunes Wireless goes live. You will now be able to log on to and browse, preview and buy songs off of ITMS wirelessly on the iPhone and iPod Touch. (Link)

Misc 2: Custom ringtones for iPhone users. You can browse from a catalog of half a million songs to create up to 30 second clips to make as ringtones. You pick a song, bracket off a section of said song, fade in and/or out if so desired, and buy – viola! New ringtone. You’ll pay $2 for this service per ringtone, though, but if you want to use pre-cut ringtones from these songs, you can save yourself a buck. (Link)

Misc 3: Starbucks. They’ve partnered with Starbucks so that when you’re in their establishments slogging down charred, overpriced java with funny names, you can connect wirelessly to Starbucks’ hotspot and browse and buy music from their music catalog, too. Only applies to select markets in the USA for now. It’ll expand to other markets across the 'States eventually. Personally: Meh. (Link)

In case you feel like watching the entire keynote address, including a live performance by KT Tunstall at the end, you can find it here.

And yes, you can flag audio books in the new iTunes, which will enable bookmarking.

All in all, it’s interesting. Most of the biggest rumours panned out pretty much as rumoured, though in the case of the Touch, not in quite the same configuration. No one expected a split between the “Classic” and “Touch” – most people expected the Touch to be hard drive based, and I wish it was. sigh

Thanks for the update. I’m glad you commented because I saw that and was wondering about it. Most MP3 players seem to be in the 30-40 gig range, so this was baffling to me. That seems pretty expensive for so little space.

Hmm. I gotta check this out. Thanks.

**BBBobbio **-- had to Google “Yuengling” :o But now I know what it is… sure. If I managed to get through the party with nothing wrong with my head but a stray thong wrapped around it… I’ll be fine
How’s the finger doing?

**Roo **-- hi!

All the ChiDopers and visitors – have a great time today; wish I could be there, too.

Weekend, ahoy!!

Pictures are required!

Howdy Y’all! Sorry for bein’ AWOL but it’s been kinda crazy on the work front. I’ve been workin’ late the past couple days. Let’s just say, if it could go wrong, it has gone wrong. Stoopid machinery! Especially stoopid can scanners (that scan and are supposed to reject non-full cans) and conveyors with broken belts. I have a lovely biiiiiiiiiiiiiig bruise on my right forearm due to bein’ pelted with twelve ounce cans of shudder Pabst Blue Ribbon shudder yesterday. Full twelve ounce cans even. Stoopid scanner! Oh and havin’ to deal with gasp mixed cans gasp! My other line is for 24 ounce cans, which I have learned, get sold mostly to stadiums and sports arenas and such. Apparently it is de rigeur to quaff 24 ounce cans of beer and shudder malt liquor shudder at such places. Ok, see, we were runnin’ 24 oz. Miller Lites and different Lite cans got mixed up in one order. Horror of horrors! Course in my mind I’m thinkin’ if one is drinkin’ 24 ounce cans of beer would one really care if the can was the standard Lite can, the Lite can with the Monday Night Football schedule on it or the Lite Racing can. For real. It says “Miller Lite Racing” on it and has a checkered flag. Anywho, cans got mixed up so I along with two of my cohorts spent a lovely three hours yankin’ cans as they came out of the pasteurizer. I can’t wait to find out what happens today!

Anywho, yays, boos, congrats, hugs, stop that right nows, as appropriate.

Have a great day/evenin’ or whatever you may be havin’ wherever you are, folks!

I am here and still hating web pages. If it is at all possible, things today are even worse than they were on Wednesday.

Having yesterday off was great - I did all the things I wanted to do and even found time for a bit of lazing around.

And now it’s Friday and almost lunchtime. That means hometime is in sight!

VBob - so sorry to hear about the kitties, but yay on becoming alien-less and avoiding the addition of boobies!

Getting ready to go to the airport…

More later, probably… If not, then sometime on the weekend.

Happy Friday!!

GT

Morning Mumpers! Another glorius weekend of working day and night. :dubious:

gt, have a safe flight, and enjoy the party!

swampy, don’t be hating my PBR, I loved it when I was a kid.

Lunch, that was me. No more Yuenglings for you, sir!

Roo, Yuengling is a beer. It’s not like I asked Lunch if he liked Kipling or anything.

The finger itches, and aches a bit if I hit it on something. Overall, I’ve taken only 2 Vicodins, and 1 of those was out of curiosity. The other was at bedtime last night after Freya decided the dressing was a chewtoy.

Yuengling? I never brought that up, but I’ll hoist one with ya…

Sorry guys… I know there’s absolutely no good reason, but I seem to mix you two up even when I’m not partied out…
Every time I respond to one of you I have to check to make sure I got it right. And I forgot to do it this time :o
Oh well… Doggio, got another bottle for Bob, here? Roo, want to try some of mine? It’s pretty good!!

GT I just want you to know I’m officially jealous.

BooFae – What’s with the web pages? How difficult can it be for an IT department to put up a frickin’ web site, and why do **you **need to be working on it so hard?

I go to the Michigan football game this weekend. If they lose to Oregon, it’s going to be mighty angry in Ann Arbor.

Things aren’t going to where they should and one of the main index pages just isn’t there any more. Mostly the problem is that people can’t find things because the home pages aren’t working properly so they’re not accessible.

We have very nice web pages with all the right information on a system that works via FrontPage. In their wisdom, the Uni decided to change the entire system because they wanted new navigations etc and also changed from FP to SiteStudio. All very nice, I hear you say.

The IT people started setting up pages according to the navigation plans that had been decided, and we had to wait ages for our page to appear in the new system. When it did, it was my job as our section’s web editor to put all the information that we have in FP onto the new SS pages. That’s what I’ve been doing for the last few months…and then when the system went live on Monday and things weren’t where they were supposed to be, I found out (after discussions with our web content officer) that there’s another page in a completely different part of the site that duplicates what’s on my little chunk of webspace.

So now we have to work out how to either break the links or stop the other section interfering because we can’t remove it completely and it’s messing up the accessibility of what I’ve already done elsewhere.

I’m just having a very “bah!” time with it. And of course Tin Knickers thinks it’s all my fault and the reason it’s not accessible is because I’ve done something wrong. So today I had to have a meeting in her office and attempt to explain to a complete Luddite exactly why it’s not my fault and why I haven’t actually done anything wrong. Truly, they don’t pay me enough for this kind of grief.

Muck Fichigan!
