A Tad Late, but Still the MMP....

FCM, I love the yellow vase - it looks adorable.

I tried my hand at a risotto recipie on the domesticgoddess’s website for dinner tonight. It turned out decent, I think, although I think it could be better. Next time.

rigs, I agree that Mother Nature could do better than this. I want big fluffy snowflakes! Not icy sleet. Ew.

In other news, my brother has finally gotten his own laptop, so there is no longer a power struggle occuring between us for the use of mine. Good thing UPS delivers on MLK day. It might have come to bloodshed.

Off to watch Rome.

I am officially turkeyed out. Turkey sammiches for lunch and turkey sammiches with fries and gravy for dinner has given me turkey fatigue. One more bite and I may have developed PTSD (Pronounced Turkey Stomach Distension).

It seems as though the weather was so bad today that as many as 500 accidents were reported in Ontario alone, and the majority of those were single-car crashes from people going too fast given the conditions. I know people seem to turn into morons on the first significant snow of the season, but this is ridiculous.

Hi, all. Jokes are always good, Rigs. Especially good jokes. Unlike the painful excuses for humor that Papa Tigs all too frequently passes along to me from a friend of his. I really wish he wouldn’t.

We had a cloudy but insanely warm day for this time of year. 67, although according to the TV weatherpeople, the record for DC for this date is, believe it or not, 77. All I know is that when I’m out in the car and I have to turn the air conditioning on in freaking January, something is wrong with this world.

Papa Tigs and I spent the night in Atlantic City, slept late, got up and ate the delicious but huuuge buffet, and drove home. He lost, I won, so we just about broke even. I also borrowed a scooter to use around the hotel/casino, and it was the first time in far too long that I’ve actually not been in severe pain by the time I head home from just about any trip anywhere. The new knee is definitely overdue. But the scooter was awesome. The idiots who would step right in front of me while I was moving and come to a dead stop, forcing me to try to avoid running into their asses, not so much.

Of course, the surgery scheduler was out sick Thursday and Friday, and today she was so backed up that her voicemail said to give her two days to return my call. Oy. So I still have no idea if I can get my new knee in March or will have to wait until 2009 or so. Hopefully I’ll have a date before the week is out.

We did see one amazing thing driving up yesterday. Out in a farmer’s field in Delaware somewhere, we saw a flock of some variety of snow geese – a gigantic flock. Some were on the ground, some were swirling in the air, but there had to have been, at a minimum, a couple thousand of them. To say they were amazingly beautiful is a serious understatement! Papa Tigs grew up watching flocks of hundreds of thousands of birds flying around, but this is the first time I’ve seen anything close. Sometimes Mother Nature does things right, even when she’s doing so many other things wrong, y’know?

FCM, the new pots are great! I love the little vase in the second photo with the markings down the side, and the bowl in the last photo with the green markings inside it. They’re both so cheerful! You’ve got a good eye for glazing, even if you’re still working out the details.

rigs - cute joke

fcm - the bunny jar is adorable

taxi - sorry about your kitty - just love her and make her comfortable until she crosses the Rainbow Bridge.

I only skimmed the thread - I’ve been in bed all day with a bad back - I have no idea if there is snow here or not, but at around 7pm I heard some neighbor kids hooting and hollaring so it’s possible we had flurries.

I’ve been cranky all day - good thing the office was closed. So cranky that I didn;t even want to cuddle Smokey - she was very puzzled by this and kept coming back to chck on me. I finally slept for a bit and when I woke up, she was on my lap. When I woke up she walked up to my face, licked it a few times, then went off to chase some greeblings.
I took some pain meds a while ago - I may take more just to insure I sleep tonight without weird dreams. I had one earlier today in which my sister and I were fighting over the last bottle of Coke.

Pugs, your whole family is still in my thoughts and prayers. Lots of hugs.

Hello to everyone, nyah Mindfield, we’ve got winter, and I’m going to bed. See you all tomorrow.

Want the rest of mine? I can’t finish it. It got cold.

Bed? Splendid idea. Right after I finish m–zzzzzZZZZZzzzzz…

{{{Meli}}} and {{{Pugs}}}

Yesterday I spoke with Mom. That great-aunt I mentioned recently? They went to see her on the 31st. Mom went back home on the 1st and we talked about it. Yesterday I found out she died on the 1st, too.

Sometimes Mom thinks I just know everything she knows. Sometimes she tells me the same story three times in a single visit. I guess we all do that, but really…

Last Friday Mom was going home after taking care of The Nephew all day and getting a dressing-down in return (I don’t think I’ve ever heard SiL say anything good about anybody, or at least anything good that wasn’t followed by a “but”); she ran into a neighbor who asked her “hi, how are you! I haven’t seen you in ages!” and just broke down into tears. SiL et co are really overdoing it: first we couldn’t even hold the baby without her hovering over us anxiously, but now that she needs a free babysitter, Mom’s on baby-duty 16x6 and hasn’t seen any of her own friends in over a month. So Mom talked to them on Saturday, but the solution SiL decided on (without any attempt at dialogue) doesn’t really cover Mom’s needs, namely some time to do her own house and have her own life.

The worst part, I think: SiL is basically a younger version of Mom. She’s behaving like Mom used to before Dad died and we reeducated her. I do hope SiL gets reeducated before The Nephew turns 30 and Middlebro dies :frowning:

{{{{{Pugs and family}}}}} {{{{{Meli}}}}} and {{{{{Nava}}}}} 'cos I think you could do with some as well.

It’s turning colder over here again, who keeps playing with the weather? I bet it’s you lot, keep confusing Mother Nature so she doesn’t know what to send where.

I went to the gym last night. I ache today. Caffeine might help.

Prayers and good thoughts headed to Meli and Puggy from south Jawja. Puggy take consolation in the thought that your dad is dying peacefully and well cared for. I cannot say enough nice things about hospice.

Things went well last night. It was so warm (seventy-five Amurrkin at seven p.m.) we ate out on the back porch. Actually that was great because everybody sorta wandered out there to hang out and nosh whilst I finished up cooking the company smashed N.O.T. and biscuits. Even grill, which is in sore need of a good cleaning (this weekend’s chore) did good. The last people left about 8:15, I loaded up the dishwasher and went to bed. I was a tahred bear.

It’s 62 Amurrkin right now. That will be our high for the day. It’s also rainy, which we need so yay. Why, the highs will only be in the low sixties for the rest of the week with some temps near freezing. I may need to borrow Puggy’s no snow sign.

All you cool kids in area where the weather is ick take care. I’ve been reading some scary stuff about this weather system.

FCM, your stuff is very pretty. I love the bowl that’s blue inside and pink outside.
Be sure to let me know when you’re showing or selling it somewhere around here.

One of the weirdest moments in my relationship with SiL (and I’ve told this before in the board, so if it sounds familiar yes, I’m repeating myself) took place when she and Middlebro had been married for about a year and a half. We were at the pool, which in Spain are mostly public; this one has low occupancy so other people were far enough not to hear us, but still anybody walking by could have. So it was kind of a strange place to have that conversation.

SiL mentioned that they were having problems with penetration and informed us of a bunch of gynecological problems with herself and her mother. Mind you, I still believe that a great part of the problem was her terror of getting pregnant when she didn’t want to. Mom (who’d totally freaked out 4 years before when she found out her 29yo baby girl wasn’t a virgin any more) and me explained about things like “doggie style”, “girl on top” and the use of lubricants.

In, you know, sort of the equivalent of the village square.

I know doctors aren’t necessarily sex experts but JEEEEEzus!

When they moved last year, a male friend and myself were moving a piece of furniture when a porn DVD fell off. We don’t think it’s hers.

The standard joke around Mayberry is that if you go 2 years without hitting a deer, you’re either an exceptional driver, or you need to play the lottery. Today is not my day with for numbers.

Less than 5 minutes from home, I see 2 does on the left shoulder. I immediately hit the horn, which usually breaks the dazzlement with them. This time, one turns to run from the road. The other one… “Oh shit, it’s gonna jump!” Jump it did, but fortunately it hesitated just enough. I managed to squeak past, and heard a minor ‘tink’ from the back end instead of the sickening thud I was expecting.

I stopped. No deer in the road, no dents, and the only sign that anything even happened was a couple of hairs caught in the lift gate (the Nerdmobile is a station wagon). As I was walking the road looking for an injured Bambi, one of my hose buddies from the pig barn fire came by, and stopped for a second to make sure everything was copacetic (big word for a Southerner, too). Og had his/her hand on me once again…

Speaking of dodging bullets, my cousin didn’t quite have a heart attack. He had 1 medicated stent put in yesterday, and the artery involved was 95% blocked. Scott came through it easily. Now he has to worry about his wife killing him because of this…

{{{{{Meli and Pugs}}}}} Your dad will know he’s loved, Pugs, even if he doesn’t seem altogether with it. And I too echo the praises of hospice; what wonderful folks!

Excellent job on nearly avoiding the deer, Bobbio. Is it those trained firefighter reflexes? Whatever it was, I’m glad everything turned out copacetic. (That’s such a great word; does anyone know where it came from?)

It’s definitely cooler here this morning, 48, which makes the puppies happy, but isn’t cold enough for snow to make Palebunny happy. It was warm enough yesterday that Papa Tigs took them to the beach. Rusty decided it was too cold and the tide was in too far to want to actually swim, but he figured out quickly that another dog at the beach would retrieve his toy for him and then politely hand it over when he got in to shore. So he had another dog retrieving for him. Stoopid dog!

Papa Tigs starts his new job today. Here’s hoping all goes smoothly with civilian personnel; in spite of his 16+ previous years of civilian and military experience, I can just see them causing him grief putting him back on the government rolls. I say that as someone who once worked in civilian personnel, too. I know how many ways everything can get screwed up!

Off to drink more coffee.

speaking of hitting creatures crossing the road - my friend almost hit a peacock. It was blithely crossing the parkway and turned and staqrted walking towards her slowing but still fast moving car. The it suddnely took off (straight up, like a helicopter, she told us) and flew over her car and out of sight - it was so close, the tail feathers brushed her windshield. And here I thought peafowl were flightless birds!

It’s really flipping cold here, single digit cold.

Snow on the ground, single digit cold.

::glares at rigs::

On the brighter side, 55 days til I fly to Arizona for a week of rest, relaxation and Spring Training!!!

No reflexes involved, except to reach for the horn. NC law is that if you swerve to avoid the deer and still wreck, the insurance company doesn’t have to pay off.

In VA, the insurance company has to pay off, but if someone is injured or killed because you swerved, you can be criminally charged. A girl swerved to miss a deer just before Christmas near the previous VunderLair, and killed her best friend who was riding shotgun. She was charged with reckless driving and vehicular homicide.

The moral: In these parts, drive straight and have ‘Hail Mary’ memorized…

When I lived in Indiannoplace, the custom was to rate the cold in terms of cussing, 1 to 3.

One cuss: “Damn, it’s cold.”

Two cuss: “Damn, it’s f*cking cold.”

and so on…

Hit a peacock?

Hugs all round, again, guys, although especially for the pugses, and meli. Nava, here’s a stick to beat your SIL with. I use it to beat my SIL, so it’s had practice.

I’m up, I have tea, and in a few mintues I’m going to put away last night’s dishes, tidy the pantry (QD did the fridge :D) and finish up my shopping list. What do I need at Costco besides a pack of cream puffs? I have been good, and never bought either a giant cheesecake or cream puffs at Costco. The worst was a pack of delicous creme brulee.

Yum.

Is it a Clue By Four[sup]tm[/sup]?

Morning all. I’m disappointed in FOX, because there’s no new House today. Some stupid American Idol thing is my guess. I finished my second E&M homework assignment last night - fourteen handwritten, one-sided pages. Next time I may go double sided. Between what I actually write up to hand in, and the 1:1 or greater ratio of scrap page to final page, I’ll be singlehandedly supporting the paper and pencil industries this year against the rising tide of computerized information. You’re all very welcome.

Which is absurd, really, because I love flan.

I gotta run. Hugs to all who need them.
