Amercian Idol 3/27-3/28

I remember that in another thread I suggested that Sligh should sing “The Old Apartment,” and that he would rock the hell out. Now I think he doesn’t deserve that song, and he should just get the hell out. I used to like him, but now I kind of think he’s a tool. And I don’t think I can ever forgive him for what he did to that poor Police song. It was just … unconscionable. Blasphemy.

Lakisha- Very nice, as always, let’s see the interesting folks now.

Chris S.- His picture is in the dictionary next to “flash in the pan”.

Gina- I really just can’t stomach this girl. The only thing that makes her a rocker is the hair dye.

Sanjaya- That was a cry for help if ever I saw one.

Haley- Keep your filthy lips off Cyndi’s songs, Barbie!

Phil- Thanks for covering The Head! Not a bad performance, although I still couldn’t watch it because of The Eyebrows.

Melinda- Liked the outfit, good performance.

Blake- I didn’t find him fascinating this week, but I hope Paula’s right about him being the dark horse.

Jordin- Awful song, and she looked like a giantess in that cutesy little outfit. I’ll love her again next week.

Chris R- I turned off the TV before he even hit the stage.

picks up the scraps of NJ_Kef’s credibility and scurries away

Jordin was good.

Gina was good.

Melinda was good but boring. She’s losing her edge. This troubles me because she’s so damn good but her song choices are killin’ me!

Everyone else was a giant snore-fest.

Sanjaya is just playing to the stupidity of his still being in the race. Sigh…that poor, pathetic child.

Lousy week. Really lousy.

And I’ll add that all the outfits were hideous. What the hell were they thinking? I’m so glad Simon said something. Weird-ass case of Idols Without Mirrors.

You pretty much summed up exactly how I felt about everybody, particularly your Gina comment. However I like the song Jordin sang, I just thought she did a terrible job with it, and I watched (but didn’t especially like) Chris R’s performance.

Otherwise you nailed it.
[li]Blake, the only reason I have you in 4th place is because so many others were worse, not because I found you to be good – and it’s not your fault. Seacrest said at the beginning that someone would be singing a song by The Cure. He lied. You didn’t sign a Cure song, you sang a 311 song.[/li]
Exactly! The funny thing is that I had forgotten that 311 bludgeoned that song to death a few years back and I forgot that 311 is Blake’s favoritest band ever* . When Ryan mentioned someone singing The Cure, I told my husband that it would be Blake and he would probably sing “Lovesong”. Then I changed my mind and thought he should do “Close to Me” because it has a cool little beat that he could beatbox on (with? to? I don’t know the appropriate preposition).

Overall, the night was very uninteresting. Even Gwen Stafani admitted that the bands that inspired her weren’t known for great singing.

Did anyone else think she threw Melinda and Lakisha a bone and just said, “Yeah, Donna Summer. She inspired me. Whatever.” It seemed out of left field.

 • I do like 311, but it’s an odd choice as someone’s favorite band of all time. And their version of Lovesong is a complete snoozefest.

I have always found you to be quite perceptive, McNew.

I thought of you when he was trying to explain his timing trouble: “most songs have the something on the downbeat and this is on the upbeat” or some such. I also thought of you when Stacey went “WOOOOO” at least twice during the wrap-up.

Stacey’s freaky eyes plus a stalker song? Recipe for the ultimate creep-out.

I agree with what Diana Ross said about Haley: she would be a good studio singer but gets lost in front of the band. I think her voice is really pretty but I can’t hear it! So she’s wrong for this.

Yeah, Melinda needs to change it up. She is the frontrunner but makes everything sound the same. Great, but the same.

Yeah that and…LEGGINGS? Yeesh!

Please let somebody have had mercy on Sanjaya and let him leave tonight. He’s a nice kid, he really is…but oy vey. I know why he’s stayed around because I’d be fighting off the tweens to get to him myself, but…oy vey.

I didn’t want to mention them because I had hoped I was hallucinating that part, but … “yeesh!” indeed.

Did anybody catch that shot of the audience with the woman holding up the big cardboard record that said something like “Save Sanjaya- vote for my people”, or something along those lines? McWife and I were   .

The whole night was like The Parade of Shower Curtains, fashion-wise.

Every time I see Melinda, I think she’s channelling Tina Turner. She moves very much the way Tina does.

For you, my dear, I’d be happy to pretend I graduated from college in '96. It’s easy to be the same age as me, by the way. All you have to do is pretend you’re still 23.

Interesting night. I’m a little pissed that some contestants got away with singing stuff that wasn’t from the '90s. Tell me they couldn’t have found something else to sing.
My rankings for the night:

 1. Gina - I love Gina, but I never thought I’d be ranking her first. She just had the most interesting performance and vocally she was spot on.
 2. Phil - Never thought I’d be ranking him so high either. Loved his voice on this one.
 3. Jordin - Hated the outfit, loved the performance. She could really be a dark horse here, I think. She’s become much more interesting to me than both Lakisha and Melinda.
 4. Melinda - She sang really well, of course, but yawn. At least she didn’t do that “surprised” look during the judges’ comments last night. I’m pretty sick of the, “Oh! I can sing? Really? You think so?” look. She did do it for Gwen but not the judges.
 5. Blake - Pretty good, actually. I liked his tone and his vibrato on this one.
 6. Lakisha - I did not feel this at all. I don’t think she sang it that well.
 7. Chris R. - I loved how this started out but then he went all boy band and nasally on me again. He actually kind of looked hot to me for a second too, but I’m over it now.
 8. Chris S. - I really liked it when it started out, but he totally lost control of it. He simply cannot keep a beat.
 9. Haley - Not good, not bad, not interesting, not worth keeping around much longer.
 10. Sanjaya. He looked like Pebbles from The Flinstones. I seem to remember him singing something too, but just barely.

Just tossing out a few clothing comments:

I liked the shades of blue in Melinda’s tunic, hated the crazy big red prints on Lakisha, thought Sligh looked like a slob.

That’s all. What else is there to say? A dull week, overall.

Oh goodness yes. I had blotted it out of my memory until I saw this.

 Too funny! I was thinking he looked like Helen of Troy wearing Paris’s helmet.

Admittedly, I haven’t tuned in every week, but I thought Sanjaya (sp?) sounded pretty good, and the 'hawk was pretty gutsy, given all the flak he gets, kinda a “screw all you haters!” Pretty sure I’ve seen worse talent on AI, but then again haven’t seen his whole body of work.

I DVR’d it last night and my internet was down. So a quick rundown while at work. Note that I have not read most of the thread. And I may have them out of order.

LaKisha - I liked her performance. It’s not a song that I care for normally, but it’s nice to see her do something up-tempo. Not a fan of the dress. Holy cleavage, Batman!

Gina - I’m in love. Her best performance ever, and probably the best performance of the night. Her look finally settled somewhere punkish but not wincingly cliched.

Chris S. - I used to like you? Sing in tune and on time please. Completely inadequate for a top 10 performance.

Phil - I wanted to dislike it based on his last few performances, but I reluctantly must concede that I actually enjoyed that. Not bad at all.

Sanjaya - AHHHHAAAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!!1!eleventyOne!!!

OK, he’s just fucking with us now. My husband begged me to fast forward, but I was facinated. Such a trainwreck.

Haley - It’s True Colors. It’s a haunting, beautiful song on its own. Please do not mess with the melody or sing in a completely high school voice. Do not want.

Melinda - Did a good job, as always. At this point, even if she got booted she has a career waiting for her, so she’s got it made. She really needs to pick some better songs though. And what the hell was she thinking with that outfit?

Blake - Easily the best guy in the competition, which is damning him with faint praise. Boring performance, nice vocal. He’s beyond safe.

Jordin - Did an OK job with what little she had to work with in the song. After last week, I’m crushingly disappointed that she didn’t do Don’t Speak, which is one of my favorite songs, and she would have totally rocked it. I hope this doesn’t get her prematurely kicked off.

Chris R. - Oh, so that’s why Jordin didn’t do… wait… he… boybanded it? And forgot the lyrics? AHHHHAAAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!!1!eleventyOne!!!

Summary: Since they’re not going to end the Sanjaya debacle anytime soon - send home any boy but Blake. Or Haley.
