Amercian Idol 3/27-3/28

Yeah, I think Chris R was the weakest this time. Of the people I can take seriously I mean; Sanjaya is left out of this list.

One more Sanjaya comment: The 'tude is even more unflattering than the 'do.

Yeah, he’s not even likeable anymore. He can go now.

Yeah, he’s become a snotty teenager and let the fan hysteria go to his head. “Simon, you wish you could wear your hair like this”?! Good one

I’m a little late to the party and most all my comments have been said but I’m going to say them anyway, so there!

Chris S. - He was my early favorite but he’s received advice from professionals a couple times now and has ignored their advice, which he shouldn’t have. Whether he was just incapable of following it or just didn’t want to I don’t know but I think he’s in trouble after this one. If he goes home I won’t be that upset though, he can sing but he may have reached his level of competance and would just be competing with all the other not as good singers for “who gets to stay the longest but will not win”. I will give him credit for at least remaining humble and not taking the “well, that’s your opinion judges but the audience loves me, right audience?” approach to criticism.

Haley - If Chris S. doesn’t leave then it should be you for messing with True Colors. I saw Cyndi on the View a week or so ago and she sand the song and I remember thinking I hope no one sings this song on AI and totally craps it up. You crapped it up Haley, bye now!

Chris R. - Randy keeps saying he likes the “runs”. I hate the runs. If you can’t sing without the runs then please go home because they’re giving me the runs. Well, even if you can sing without the runs you could/should still go home soon.

Phil - Meh

Gina - A slightly better meh.

Sanjaya - Okay, I like the kid. I don’t always like his singing though. I like that he also seems to be having fun with his new found “popularity”. What I don’t like is the attitude he gave to Simon. When good kids start showing attitude that usually means it’s time to go home and it loses you some of those “oh, he’s a sweet kid” votes. I have my doubts that the attitude was all his idea.

Melinda - Capable as usual but no wow.

Lakisha - Vocally capable but definitely no wow. The song as DS sings it starts out slow and then leads to a quicker tempo and an outpouring of emotion, but that was just sort of slow and then less slow. Neither Melinda or Lakisha should go home yet but they need to stop coasting and start bringing it like their earlier stuff.

Jordin - I really like her but that song is just annoying and the outfit! It was like her private school went on a picnic and her blouse got dirty so she put on the picnic blanket instead. I was really expecting Simon to say something about that.

Blake - I completely forgot about him until I realized I only had 9 names. I guess he gets a meh, too. He shouldn’t go home though because he has better in him.

I’m still rooting for Chris S. but last night hurt. Did he give a hint that maybe he’s catching a cold? It sure sounded like it.

“It’s like some ghastly tablecloth that’s been lying on the ground during some horrid school outing!”

Since the beginning I’ve gotten a vibe from Chris S. like he’s there to do his thing his way, and has no real desire to take anyone’s advice even if it means he’ll go home. I think he’s completely ambivalent about the whole thing. He’s very conciliatory with his comments, like last night’s “they’re right, it was my bad” thing, but I get the sense that he’s always giving a (very Christian) finger/FU to the judges behind their backs. If he gets within the top 5 I think he’ll be very unhappy and probably sabotage his own performance to get voted home.

The judges keep saying it’s a *singing * competition, but the name of the show is American Idol, and any singer who wants to be a star needs to have personality, charisma. Some of the biggest stars in music history weren’t all that as singers ( :cough: Dylan :cough: ). Being a great singer with a beautiful voice works well with some songs, but not with others. Pavarotti shoudn’t do rock numbers anymore than Bono should do opera.
Also, being an Idol means you enter a pre-packaged deal, 'cause the record company needs to get that CD out while there’s still a buzz.
That said, the best singers aren’t automatically the best artist. A record company needs to have something more to sell, and Melinda doesn’t have it, neither does Lakisha, but she’s better than Melinda. Jordin OTOH is a capable enough singer, not in the same league as Melinda and Lakisha, but still very good. She looks a lot better, is younger and will be a very good performer of what the producers send her way. I bet TPTB are rooting for her, or someone like her.

The funny thing about that was that there were billions and trillions of possible dumbass responses and by sheer blind luck, he reached in the hat and pulled out just about the dumbest of them all.

Is a Christian finger somehow different from, I don’t know, an Islamic finger? Or a Hindu finger? Or for that matter, an atheist finger?

Did you happen to see any of the Vertigo shows? Because Bono does sing opera and he does it quite well. Not enough to make a living at it, but there aren’t many singers who can throw an Italian aria into a rock show and carry it off.

Link–it starts at 3:23.

I’m not really sure what you’re getting at but don’t read so much into it. All I meant was I doubted he actually gives the finger to anyone or mutters an FU in their direction, considering his religious background. And I might be off the mark, but I thought I read somewhere- maybe here- that he fairly religious and went to a Christian college.

Wow, that was beautiful. Thank you.

My apologies. I shouldn’t have automatically taken the most sensitive interpretation. He did attend a Christian college briefly, but he left it.

I don’t think he even wants to win this competition. I think he wants to be discovered for what it is he likes to do. This is just a means to that end. Every time he blows off suggestions, he’s hoping someone from the Chris Sligh School of Contemporary Music will say, “I’ve got my eye on him!”

No, I haven’t. BUT THE reason I brought up Mr Hewson is just because he has the dramatic flair and a beautiful voice which might, with early training, have made a decent opera tenor. As it is now, at his age of 47, he wouldn’t be able to restrain himself where it’s proper. He’d be too dramatic, trying to compensate lack of training, whereas I think a large part of the training is being able to show restraint.

Sorry for the operatic hijack. It’s just that for all their great great voices, I can’t see Melinda or Lakisha as stars. Being a great singer is *not * what it’s all about. It that were the case, Steph would still be here and Haley would be out.

Lakisha - great vocalist
Melinda - she’s great as always; her outfit is what is in fashion.
Haley - I actually liked it but her nerves don’t help her cause.
Phil - I loved it. He kept the sultriness of the song.
Chris R. - not great, not bad
Gina - great song; great vocals
Sanjaya - oh dear. Please go home.
Melinda - Capable as usual but no wow.
Jordin - Funky, young. Her outfit added 20 pounds to her.
Blake - Beautiful song; I’m glad he didn’t bee-di-bop it. Who stole his upper lip?

You did Melinda twice and no Chris S.

I was disappointed by the show and will probably watch a movie tonight.

Chris S. and Lakisha have begun looking as if they’re not all that happy being on that stage. Actually, it’s been coming for a while. Chris looks uncomfortable and forced, while Lakisha looks like she’d rather be anywhere else. She will last longer than he will, but I think they’ll be going home within the next few weeks.

Lisa Tucker, last season, looked either bored, miserable, or angry when she wasn’t onstage and perhaps didn’t realize how much the camera was picking up. She didn’t last as long as she could have. People notice. We’ll see.

Ryan with a hawk, huh?

I can see Sanjaya pulling the VFTW/Stern/tweenie/Hawaiian vote (whew) but what’s keeping Haley in?
